Guy told me to go " F" myself at the driving range last weekend.

That's an incredibly stupid thing to say. Walking away from an escalating situation makes you "a victim?" Please.

A bigger, smarter man walks away and doesn't feel the need to put himself in a potentially dangerous situation.

Yup. Even if you think you're a "tough guy", you never know what the other guy is packing.

Not worth it, and just stupid. I've never started a fight in my life, and don't plan on it. You don't throw a punch, neither do I.

Played a nice course in Stockton this weekend, about an hour from my house. Regular foursome, it was going to be a good day.

I check in and grab a club and head for the driving range to loosen up. I go to the nearest open stall and dump my bucket. Guy next to me says that he's saving the stall for his wife, ok I'm ok with that, but now I've got to pick up the balls I dumped, I muttered something like Jesus crist, ( Lord I apologize) and bend down and start picking up my balls and the guy tells me to go Fu%$k Myself.

I was not believing my ears, I ask him if he just told me to f myself. Without waiting for an answer I walked up to about 6 inches from him looked into his terrified eyes and said f you and walked away, I was so mad I was shaking as I walked away.

Took me awhile to calm down and then I went out  on a tough course and shot a 90, my best in a long time.

Thanks for allowing me to vent.

I couldn't have played well after getting steamed.   Maybe you should swing harder all the time?

Well, remember that this is a different day than what I grew up in, I'm almost 66.  Someone around you has a camera with video waiting to put you on YouTube or give to the enforcers of the law and lawyers.  Might be embarrassing to have a live video of you getting your arse whipped go viral...My experience is that today, it is quite possible that anyone you deal with is armed in some way.

Unless you feel physically threatened and have no means to escape, you best just let it go, be the bigger guy and move over a few stalls.  You can always walk away from the Monkey Dance, but if you choose to stay and kind of taunt the guy, the tables can be turned on you and show you as the problem.  Chances are, the individual with the phone videoing the incident did not turn the video on until after the first verbal exchange and only begins with you in his face spewing profanity....That is what a jury will see...Think About It!

I'd agree with the above. Being older, and some what wiser, unless your physically threatened best to walk away. More often than not, loud mouths are the weak wanting / hoping to get the better of you by seeming to be tough. In my experience, tough guys are the guys that usually say the least, and have nothing to prove to anyone.

Good post by DoubleEagle...

You lookin' for a pop in the chops junior?

You internet talkin' to me? I'll internet kick you a$$! I'll internet rip your head off and internet $*%# down your neck!

I've walked away from fights - backed off knowing I wouldn't win the fight, and also walked away knowing 100% that I could win. So what does it matter?

Years ago, there was a guy who had it in for me because he thought I'd stole his girlfriend (which I didn't). We saw each other on the road one day, both pulled over and ended up nose to nose talking crap. I finally backed down and we talked about what had happened. As he was leaving he pulls a Rambo-sized knife out of his pants, threw it in his car and took off.

There are things worth fighting over and even getting your ass kicked over. As mentioned in another post, your family would be worth it, defending someone weaker - say an elderly person or a kid, and defending your home might fall into that category. But an argument at a driving range, or someone cutting you off in traffic... c'mon.

I've lived in some tough neighborhoods and gone to some tough schools and there's a certain truth to the idea you have to stand up for yourself. But as an adult, someone tells me F.U. for no apparent reason, I'm going to laugh at him and ask him what his problem is. If he has a legitimate reason for being that P.O.'d, I'll try to reason with him. If it's beyond that, what am I going to do, fight him?

We sent a message and I doubt anything like that will happen again. But who knows, 85% of our membership is either Irish or Italian Catholic and most of them grew up fighting their brothers and sisters at home so it becomes kind of second nature.

I agree that there are cultures where fighting is part of life, and it usually doesn't escalate past a couple punches. However, in some cultures if you punch someone it could escalate well beyond that.

Being an Irish Catholic myself and growing up being surrounded by Irish and Italian Catholics, I believe I speak from experience. Big families and plenty of infighting. But pretty much in-house. I remember that my older brother was the only one who was allowed to kick my ass and anybody else tried, he had something to say about it.

The two guys who got into it were both hardheaded, emotional guys of Irish descent, and neither one of them would dispute that description.

That was myth?  Along with Irish, I thought all Canadians were cool.  Perhaps, Irish folks have quicker temper of the two.

This thread reminds me that some people just don't have temperament to play golf.  I think I am one of those.   I have little patience, a quick temper, and can't seems to hit a standing still object with a stick with any consistency.   But I think I can exchange profanity with the best of them.

    • Shot 50/41 today. I didn't hit the ball particularly well but not as poorly as the score would indicate. I just happened to hit it in some really punishing places that wound up taking one or two strokes just to hit back into play. The undergrowth and the fescue are really growing in at the course. Lipped out and burned a few edges on putts, too. I always say when I miss putts by that small a margin that they're eventually going to drop as long as I don't deviate from the process and that's exactly what started happening on the back 9. I ended up making a couple of mid-length putts. Five over on the back included a triple bogey on 17.
    • Birdied the par 5 #14 at Quail Brook GC. Hit a high draw 3W just short of the green on my second shot, chipped just right of the back right flag to about 12' and made the putt. It's starting to look like I'm going to get at least 20 rounds at Quail Brook for it to qualify as my home course but I've been adding the birdies there to my away composite for so long that I don't feel like separating it all now. So the away composite will simply be an aggregate of all my birdie holes for the year.

    • Congrats on the improvement. Cheers for lots of continued improvement in the future. IMO you've gotta get away from these spots… Those are partly "results" as the work will begin on things earlier in the swing. Good luck.
