I had looked at a 5W, but it was only going 10 yards less that the 7W.

Do you mean 10 yards more? I would think.

But yeah, I see higher lofted woods in my olden future. Takes a bit more (loft) to get it up as I age.. 😜

I have the loft on my 3 wood jacked up, which I think really helps when I'm playing it off the deck. I used to play a 5 wood, and that club was great off the deck as well. The higher loft definitely helps off the deck. There are many ways you could go with this, too. If you are just looking for something to fill a gap that you could reliably hit of the deck, there are lots of options beyond a 3 wood, too. I've played around with a utility wood that Callaway has, for example. It has a loft as low as 17 degrees. There are lots of hybrid options like that. Probably wouldn't give you the distance of a 3 wood, but you could get close.

Yes, distance is the reason I am going back to a traditional 15 deg 3W. It might be the only club off the deck I can get over 215 yards out of off the deck on a flat hole with no wind help. Of course, with the current consistency of my strike quality with this club makes it a low percentage club. So the mission is to get comfortable with it.

Our Par 5-18th is only 460ish yards from the white tees I play. I want to get home in two but would need to hit 225ish yards on most days for my second. That would be a career hit for my 17 deg hybrid (same loft as a 5W, I think) but a decent 3W would get me there routinely judging from the few times I've done so. So yeah, the 3W will get a lot of business in my practices.

It's at 16 degrees. I've considered going to 17 degrees, but haven't pulled that trigger yet. Plus, I already hit my 3 wood really high off the tee.

The other alternative is to work on speed with the Stack...

Did the countertop drill against a table edge. Coming away feeling a bit more stack and tilty (centered pivot).

Replicating the feel here.

Also, with a driver..

Note: Main focus on back swing. Downswing piece will probably harder.

Vishal, weight is way too far back in your ankles/heels at setup in the countertop video. Will limit how much room you have to push that direction during the backswing.

Then, you did it better with the iron, not so much with the driver. But your weight was back in the heels on these, too.

Hit some hard push draws last evening which surprised me a bit as have been hitting without much curve last month or so. Went to the range for a few minutes realized that right hand grip allowed the butt to climb up a bit higher in the palm. It seems this 'activates' a hand-elbow-arm structure that is more inclined to generate a grip twisting moment (like a screw driver). Anyway reset the grip by cradeling it at the bottom of my ring finger per first pic. The curve vanished instantaneously. Bottom pic example of what I WAS doing (bad). Top pic is what I need to be.PXL_20250710_105039670.MP.jpg

Swing check.

Cons: The countertop drill hasn't taken yet. Not crazy about A5 to A6 hand path.

Pros: Decent BS width at A2 and right elbow at A4.

All in all, not terrible but meh..

Have slowly been working on hooding my long irons less. Using a much more neutral grip and a feel of swinging above the waist. This was the 2nd swing today. A clean clip with a 4-iron with what seems like an okay centered pivot and decent balanced finish.

Played the Pete Dye River Course at Virginia Tech today. Probably one of the prettiest settings in the state and maybe one of the hardest too. Unlike a lot of Dye courses where holes only look intimidating off the tee, the fairways were hard to hit as were very narrow and rough was very grabby. Was hard to get the aim right as there very little visual alignment help. The greens were some the smallest I've seen, just enough undulations to keep you guessing and raised. Probably ran 9-9.5 but lot of pins on slopes. Bunkers both fairway and green side were sunk and hard to work with.

Have been driving well last month or so, so that worked out well but lost my lunch around the greens. Made three doubles and a triple but also had three birdies, each one with a wedge from 80 to 120 yards range.

Yeah, I drove out a few times just to check out  the landing area and still was surprised at where the ball ended up with what I thought were perfectly placed drives.

I realize the frame cuts off my tail but wanted to specifically see my hand path and club shaft and head travel from A5 to A7 with the grip and posture work I have been doing . This might be the shallowest I have managed to get the club head to enter into impact. I like the finish much more as well.

Feeling a tiny bit more upright, more width, and a slightly faster tempo. Still not enough confidence to bring a square face set up to the course but will get there one day. Interestingly, it didn't take this long to bring the driver square set up to the course. Its is like rehabbing my ankle all over again. Slow, painful and wanting for patience. I guess this is how you fill this bucket - one spoonful at a time.

    • Day 430 - 2025-12-04 Slow motion backswings (with chippy shots) with AlmostGolf balls.
    • Day 24 (4 Dec 25) - Spent about an hour working with the new 55° wedge in the backyard.  Kept all shots to under 20yds.  Big focus - not decelerating thru downswing and keeping speed up with abbreviated backswing.  Nothing like hitting a low flighted chip with plenty of check spin and then purpose to float a pitch of similar distance.
    • Day 114 12-4 Put some work in on backswing, moving the hips correctly, then feeling over to lead side. Didn't hit any balls was just focused on keeping flowy and moving better. I'll probably do another session tonight and add in some foam balls.
