I've never been fitted, but if someone has (and I think there's considerable overlap between people interested in spending $300+ on a golf information gadget and those who have gotten custom fitted for clubs), I could see them caring about something like this quite a bit. It's not just about counterweights, but things like finding optimal weight combinations between headweight, shaft weight, even the weight of a grip that doesn't have one of those tungsten inserts but is just heavy by virtue of its bulk. I'm not at the level where I think that looking at those details is the best use of my resources, but I think lots of people in the market for this gadget will be concerned about it.

http://golfweek.com/news/2004/apr/03/clubmaker-counterbalanced-jack-nicklauss-golf-club/

Above is a link describing the history of Jack Nicklaus's use of back weighting his clubs. ARCCOS sensors do back weight the clubs to a degree. I have found the added weight have not been an annoyance at all on my driving and approach shots. Actually I think I am hitting my shots a little better. I attribute this more to my choking down on the grip about one inch since I installed ARCCOS. I do this to avoid putting wear on the sensors. Maybe it is a little of both.

club ho - This is a really thorough and unbiased review - appreciate the time.

Golfingdad may claim to be tech dumbass, but I'm the real deal. I'll have to read the thread about the GG now and see which is the least obtrusive. Don't know if I'll be getting either this year - almost certainly not the ARCCOS just because of the cost. But it seems like a nice system.

I like the idea of looking over a round of golf and seeing exactly what happened, as opposed to going by a scorecard with notes written on it or my feeble memory. It would help to know what part of the game needed the most work???

If everyone had either of these systems, the whole "How Far Do You Hit Your Clubs" thread would probably be a lot different.

JonMA1:  I have to agree with your comment about reviewing your scorecard and feeble memory. I am including myself with this. I used to be able to review in my mind virtually every shot I made hole by hole of my last round and even other memorable rounds. Today I have a hard time getting through my last round and only with the assistance of my scorecard. Both of these devices solve that issue. Keep in mind you need a paper scorecard to make a few edits with both of these systems. The ARCCOS systems edits are very easy to do and I suspect GG is equally easy. The only differences with the two is:

1) ARCCOS records automatically and GG requires you to tap in each stroke.

2) ARCCOS is much more real time friendly.

Both of which to me makes it more user friendly and much more likely that I will continue to use it. Cost in a sport that requires a large capital expenditure anyway seems RELATIVELY minor.

Your right about getting real distance on your clubs. I know a few golfers who if they paid attention to the stats that these devices give you they would be pulling longer and more correct clubs for there shots.

"Actually, now I'm wondering if I was wrong in the first place.  If you turn on your phone before the round starts then lock it away in your bag and never look at it once during the round, then you're technically not "using" it, right?  Maybe its not illegal at all so long as you never refer to the phone.  Hmmmm ...."     by Golfingdad

If I never touch my phone and leave it in my pocket then I know I have not used it. Hence I did not break the rules. Now if some tournament director tries to start probing my pants pocket then he is going to have a bigger problem than me breaking the rules. Unless the director is a she and looks like Natalie Gulbis then I might find a more creative hiding spot.

Two things:

A)  At the bottom right hand of each post is a "quote" button ... press that and you won't have to type in my whole post to quote it. :-P It'll magically appear nice and neat and in its own box.  Makes it a lot easier for others to differentiate what you said versus what somebody else said.

B)  Don't look at it that way.  If you're playing in tournaments, it's not about whether or not you can hide it from a tournament director - it's about whether or not it's legal.  Golf is on the honor system.

Golfingdad may claim to be tech dumbass, but I'm the real deal. I'll have to read the thread about the GG now and see which is the least obtrusive.

I don't know that there is an answer to that.  It's going to just be your preference.  Which sounds like MORE hassle to you:

 1. Screwing up the swingweight of your clubs, and lugging your phone around in your pocket &chewing; up its battery,  or
 2. Having to wear a goofy clip on your belt and remembering to tag each shot?

Some of us answer 1, and others like @club ho answer 2.  There really isn't a wrong answer.

Okay Golfingdad how am I doing? Speaking of dumb questions how do you select a particular part of a post rather than pulling the whole post down?

BTW: I agree with your assessment it is a matter of choice. I would say that you guys are making a bit much of "LUGGING" your cell phone. We are not talking about man hole covers here! COME ON MAN!

You can use the "multi-quote" button if you want to quote different posts.  But if you want to quote only a part of one post then after you put it in your text box, you can go inside of it and delete whatever you want....

Okay Golfingdad how am I doing?

... To do stuff like this, you simple hit quote however many times as you want to separate things out (in this case, for me, its three) and then eliminate the portions of the post in each box you don't want.

Well, I don't know.  I have a 6 and I don't have a problem with it in my front pocket most of the time, however, I would have a problem with it in my back pocket.  With the 6+, I don't see it fitting in any pocket comfortably - that thing practically IS a manhole cover.

But your solution is to just keep it in your bag all of the time if you walk while you play.  (Might be hard while "lugging" all that extra weight around on the end of your clubs though. :-P )

When are you going to start sharing with us some screenshots of the interesting things the Arccos can do??

Okay Golfingdad thank you for the refresher course on how to edit and post:

First I really don't have a problem with my 6 plus phone fitting comfortably in my front or back pocket. But for those with that problem there are always cargo shorts. :-)

In terms of getting you folks screenshots of what ARCCOS can do. OBVIOUSLY I am technically challenged but I am working on that including a picture of my MAN HOLE COVER 6 plus in my back pocket! LAMS! :-D

But for those with that problem there are always cargo shorts.

Ooh, be careful here.  Some people get all riled up when you start talking about cargo shorts. :-P

Pretty sure I speak for everybody when I say that unless you are Nina Agdal nobody here wants to see a picture of your butt.  Thank you.

And that is why I am LAMS (LAUGHING AT MYSELF). And no I am not Nina Agdal but I would not mind playing hide and seek with my 6 + in MY cargo shorts with her! I guess we are getting OT here so enough said ;-)

This while a little bit hard to hear because of background noise is a good display of what ARCCOS is all about.  I just found out today when I for the first time looked at my ARCCOS information on my home computer all my information was already downloaded. It was almost spooky to see but I didn't have to download my rounds they were already on my "Dashboard" as they like to call it. A 15 minute saving in time over GG.

We'll be "investigating" Arccos as well here soon.

FWIW we were told:

 • 20% drop in battery for an iPhone 6 (may have been 6+, but I think it was just a 6)
 • 9g, which is 1.8 swingweights, roughly.

Well, for the record, the GG takes about 2-3 minutes to actually download a round, if not less.  The 10-15 minutes spent is actually in cleaning up the errors in the round (gps boo-boos, shots you forgot to tag, etc).  If the Arccos doesn't have any errors, then you might save the 15 minutes.

How does it account for putting?  Is the tag actually sensitive enough to register each putt?  (And if so, wouldn't it also register your practice putts?)  If not, do you have to add them all afterwards? (And if so, wouldn't that take at least as long as cleaning up the GG round?)

You are going to be looking through each shot regardless. IMO the purpose of these devices is to review the data with hopes it sheds light on your golf game. I definitely want it to be as close as possible but the review is well just review of the round. When I uploaded the first round I captured with GG it took 1:38. From there I went through each shot to be sure it was where it was supposed to be and view the suckage. Even with the "woah this is incredibly accurate" new user dissection it only took about ten minutes. It's not an extra step or anything you'll be looking it over anyway. Pretty much the entire reason for having something like this.

ARRCOS as I said before it downloads automatically and you can view your round on your smart phone immediately after your round. I enjoy checking it out while having a beer with the boys at the bar. This is nice because you don't have to remember to do it when you get home. Also it keeps multiple rounds for your review directly from your phone.

Regarding the putting question: The putter has a more sophisticated sensor that registers only when it senses contact. You have to be care not to hit balls back to your partners with it. If you do it is no big deal as it can be edited out at the end of the round.

As I said before I just keep it in my back pocket and keep my score on the regular course score card. After the round I reference the paper card to make edits it seems like you have to make about 3-5 edits a round and as you get use to it gets easier and faster as you go. Similar to what you do with GG.

I can see this as a really great tool for practice rounds while playing tournaments. It will give you better ideas of how to play holes based on thorough review of your practice round.
Arccos Golf Introduces Restricted App for Tournament Play (STAMFORD, CT) – Arccos Golf, LLC – maker of the #1 Performance Tracker in Golf – launches the Arccos Restricted app for tournament play, which is permitted when Local Rule is in effect (see USGA Decision 14-3/0.5). Arccos Restricted tracks shots live, bringing a player’s current hole to life via bird's-eye visuals overlaid on GPS imagery, and automatically saves that data to the cloud. This allows a player to review and breakdown their performance after the round is complete. The app also turns your iPhone into a GPS rangefinder for nearly 20,000 courses, providing precise distances to the front, middle and back of each green. “With adoption of our full system exceeding even our high expectations, we’ve responded to requests for an alternate version of Arccos specifically engineered for tournament play,” says Sal Syed, Arccos CEO. “Arccos Restricted is an outstanding solution for those players who want to use the Arccos system during competitions, while still having post-round access to our renowned Tour Analytics platform.” The complete version of ARCCOS™ – golf’s only GPS + Shot Tracking + Tour Analytics system – was recently honored with the “Top Buyer’s Choice Award” at the 2015 PGA Merchandise Show as determined by a distinguished panel of PGA Professionals and merchandisers. Requiring no alterations to pre-shot routines, additional devices, tapping or other hindrances to enjoyment and improvement, ARCCOS features a set of 14 virtually weightless sensors. Easily attached to the end of a club grip, each sensor is paired just once via Bluetooth to the company’s free iPhone app. Now available at Apple Stores, select golf retailers and pro shops nationwide, and www.arccosgolf.com, ARCCOS is more than just a great tool for the individual users. Top instructors rely on the system to help their students recognize and correct faults, such as club distance gaps, noticeable shot dispersion patterns and other problem areas. Led by a team of Ivy League engineers, rocket scientists, PhD’s and designers, Arccos Golf is named after a function of advanced mathematics.
Can you review all of the data online or do you review only on the App?

I bought an ARCCOS a few weeks ago from Amazon.

You can view the data online and by using the app.  From what I have seen thus far, you are only able to edit your shots using the app.

I am definitely interested to see what this thing tells me about my game when it gets warmer and I shake the "winter" off my swing.
