Not that this would ever happen but I have a hypothetical situation for all of you.

Two tiered green with the elevated tier being the back half. U.S open length rough around the green. You can choose between

A. 20 yards to the hole from behind the green. 15 yards to carry onto the green with the green sloping slightly away from you, too far and you roll down to the lower tier. But you get to hand place your ball in the rough

B. 20 yards to the hole from in front of the green, 5 yards to carry onto the green going uphill into the tier. But you have to drop your ball into the rough

Which do you take? The better lie or better position?

I chose B. Even if it is US Open rough the problem is a perfect lie is not as easy as you think from heavy rough.

I would rather have the green working with me than against me. At least with a bad lie I can chunk and run the ball a bit. If I am behind the hole, with that much rough, I would have to be that much more precise because of reduction in spin due to the rough.

Even with a perfect lie, if you catch a flier you are toast. If you hit it slightly low you can still chunk it short. With a drop at the front of the green you at least be more aggressive because of the green.

Either way you're in us open rough so, duh, I'll take the better position. Placing it, it's still gonna settle into the rough so it's not really even gonna be a better lie. I think the "good lie" in the question should not be in the rough but rather a closely mown area. I'd still choose better position.

Given that being above the green on a tiered green with the flag up on top can be dicey from any rough (or even closely mowed area), I'll take the position below, any day, on any kind of rough. Thank you very much!

I voted better position for pretty much the same reason. I'm not sure there is a good lie in tall rough and I still wouldn't want the green running away from me with a very small landing area to work with.

Better position - lack of spin out of the rough, green going away from you and not much room for error doesn't work for me.

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.
