Something that will go well with my new set of Mizuno MP-69's.

I really don't care for all the hosel adjustments or space-age technology.  I'd prefer a really well-made club with classic lines and clean look.

Any recommendations?

http://thesandtrap.com/b/clubs/titleist_915f_fairway_wood_review All the technology is "under the hood," so to speak. Yes, it has an adjustable hosel, but I can't think of a good reason not to have it. It helps you fine tune the club to your needs. Just get a clubfitter to find the right setting for you and never think about it again.

Callaway x2 hot. Easy to launch very straight and affordable (I think callaway has released 3 or 4 lines of clubs since then). They also look good and feel (sound) very nice.

I like the look from the top.  Clean and classic.

Fitting is going to be  problem as I live over four hours from the nearest location. (Santa Rosa, CA is + 4 hours)

But everyone has an excuse, right?

Check the bargain barrels for an older Orlimar metal wood. They were a pretty good club in their day. I have a set of them in my bag that resides in Texas.

I have an Orlimar Driver that I bought years ago from Big 5 (yeah, that's the level of purchases I've made in the past).  And while it's suited me fine, I heard that they don't use the best metals in their drivers (and I'll assume fairways woods).

Anybody know if this is true, or whether it's a baseless rumor?

It might be true for some of stuff after the Trimetals, if they did indeed switch to something else, metal wise. I have had my Orlimar Trimetals for at least 12+ years. I used them a lot when they were new, and I still use the same clubs now  when I fly to Texas to visit folks. They still play as well now as they did when new. It's me who does not play as well as I use to.

Hah! Now you're just messing with me. But I am old enough to remember when a persimmon wood was the state-of-the-art.

I still have a full set. 1,3,4,5

I was on the range about a month or two ago, and a guy I know walked up with a driver and asked me to try it.

~175 yard weak slice.

Just holding it address I was struck by how small the head looked.

We've come a long way.

Love that idea.  I was just on eBay checking them out.

@citizenzen , what's your budget?

The Callaway Big Bertha 815 fairway is a great looking head but it is adjustable.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
