"Modern" golf... since it became rat-race competitive

So then lets throw out the achievements of Ruth, Ted Williams, Hogan, and all other athletes from 50 years ago and back.

What a joke!

I'm fine with both Spieth or Dunne winning.

Leaders will probably be out around 3 PM. Guys at -6 will be out about 2 hours before, but the wind has already picked up by then. Going out late might even be an advantage if they get to take advantage of the wind abating a little towards the end of the round.

The earliest tee time featuring a member of the group at 6-under is Lawrie/Lahiri at 11:55. Say the rain and the higher winds arrive on the back-end of the predictions -- 3:00 or shortly after -- those two could be on 15 by then. DJ, Furyk, and Matsuyama may be past the Eden 11th hole, which is the toughest on the course in windy conditions.

Dunne winning would be a great story, but I think a bit flukish. Not exactly predicted as having a great future. bit still a great story. With DJ basically out of it, I got to root for Spieth. Want to see history made.

How can you say "flukish".If the guy wins tomorrow he's shot better than the rest. You saw him today?

My pick is Jason Day.

Quite a scorecard thus far. He still looks like a young Spieth from a distance or the back. A YOUNG Spieth- makes me laugh.

It should.  Dunne is more than 6 months older than Spieth.  We'll see how the older kid does after sleeping on the lead.  We already know that the younger kid can handle it.

I hope Dunne doesn't balloon up, tomorrow, but he is fighting the odds.

For me the scary guy is Padraig.  He can lump along doing nothing for weeks and months, but then he gets into contention, gets a look in his eye, and starts making everything.

I do not quite get that "inevitability" feeling with Jordan that we got with Tiger at his peak, but I still like Spieth's chances a whole lot.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

You know what I mean by flukish. Kinda like Ben Curtis. A guy that is unheard of and will probably not amount to anything after this. Sorry to be harsh, just telling it how I see it. But like I said, it would still be a great story.

    • Day 549, May 4, 2024 After lessons and working with Natalie, hit some balls for awhile. Just backswing stuff. Forgot about the slightly shorter stuff, though I'm sure it was as they were only about 75% speed with brief pauses.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
