My instructor wanted me to try to find a single club with a smaller club head than usual so I can use it in my lesson to help square up the ball on impact. aside from the 1500$+ miura clubs does anyone know of any clubs that are small?

You could find some blades or persimmon woods at just about any flea market for only a couple of bucks. If you want something more extreme there is a training aid made specifically for this by PSP golf. Never tried it myself but I agree with the principle. I will occasionally play/practice with an old persimmon driver to help keep sharp.

Look for some old Hogan blades like the One Plus, Director or Apex 2 from 1979.

I have an old set of Ram TW Grind blades that are very short toe-to-heel.  I bought them at a flea market and break them out every now and again to practice with.

The sweet spot is so much closer to the shaft for these training clubs ... If it was successful , wouldn't it have you hitting everything with your regular clubs off the heel?

Interesting point. But if you compare the sweetspot of a 460cc driver to an iron you would think we'd be hitting them off the heel all of the time.

No. I have some of the PSPs and most single digit golfers have no problem hitting them at all.

I read some pretty interesting reviews that said they're just for mental confidence in your ball striking and don't actually help strike the ball better. Maybe I should just get a blade iron? Just a single iron for practice.

I think you'd have to hit A LOT of balls with that club for you to change where you sense the sweetspot.

I think practicing with a blade every once in a while is a good idea.

I also want to point out that "squaring the face" might not be your issue. If you're struggling with a fade/slice, it's probably more of a path problem.

I ordered one, they were pretty cheap ($80 including shipping) compared to regular iron prices.  I have practiced with blades and smaller head irons all year and it's definitely helped my ball striking.

Funny, I decided to pull the trigger on one last night as well. New 7 iron x-stiff $35 including shipping from ebay. I figure I could just leave it in the trunk of the car for those times I get the urge to stop by the range but my bag is at home.

The advantage of being righty, I couldn't find a lefty 7 iron on eBay so had to pay full retail.

I've used the PSP a couple of times at the range now. Not as difficult to hit as I had imagined. I definitely feel like I'm focusing a bit more and swinging within myself when it's in my hands.

PSP is great, I hit it well and it is a great training aid to maintain focus with.  I do get some weird looks when people at the range see me hitting the PSP and  Tour Striker 7i.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
