As far as the math, if one thinks of a year's membership as running from 1-1-2015 to 12-31-2015, cancelling on or about 7/15 results in a refund close to the $638 returned.  My guess is the refund was based on a pro-rated portion of 12 months.

I did the same thing, assuming the season went from 5/1 to 10/30, or 6 months, and the notice was 7/15, or about 3.5 months in, and came up with about $615.  I think that's a pretty reasonable response.

It does not work this way.

At this point, Anthony, it seems like you simply want people to give you the answer for which you're looking, not the answer they think is best, right, etc.

I think the club was more than fair and if I were you I would be happy. You committed to a year of membership, and the club did nothing wrong. You injured yourself - that sucks, but life happens. They refunded you the proper amount based on two separate calculations that seem to show about the same amounts.

The club did not have to refund you at all.

I voted "Happy."

This is incorrect. I stated in a previous post:

I agree and I think it was reasonable and understandable. I had mixed results when I mentioned the result to friends. I really didn't take any time out to think of different perspectives of the club in a business stand point until later. It was not mentioned above but I do think the outcome was fair.

I don't know how it works, you're the only one with the contract you signed, and you haven't shared the details of that contract with us.  If they gave you more than the contract required them to give you, I think you should be more than satisfied, and it sounds like you are.  I voted "satisfied".  I don't think anyone who suffers an injury that keeps them away form golf should ever be expected to be "happy."  I missed an entire summer with a broken wrist, and I was anything but happy.

I was happy with the gift certificate when I received it. After receiving feedback from some non golfers I just wanted thought it would be interesting to know what the forum would think. I thought the statement of "this is 50% of your membership" was a little weird when it clearly wasn't but whatever. I had not seen this topic before so I thought I would ask the guys to weigh in here.

The fact that the membership does not "go for a year", is just that, it goes for the season. Our club will start charging greens fees somewhere around October unless you have paid for next years membership. I am guessing it correlates with the GHIN season of New Hampshire.

I dunno then… why are you arguing about the math people are doing? All you said was "It does not work this way" and nothing else. How are we to know how it works? If you do, why not share it?

I did share it. Are you not reading the thread? Like I said before, it is seasonal.

Buyer's remorse.

I did have buyers remorse once I was hurt but I was glad to have the ability to push the membership over. I was also curious of the opinions of others.

My club opened for the season on May 1st. I joined the club shortly after for $1400 +$100 club house money. On June 14th I injured my wrist and could not play anymore. I gave it a month before I requested my membership on hold for the season. I sent a letter out lining that I injured my wrist on the course on that day and I had not played since. The board granted me my request.

Today I received a gift certificate for $638 stating this was half my membership to put towards next years membership.

First of all it is not "half" and second, should I feel slighted or appreciative? The season usually ends in Octoberish... I am not sure how I feel about the whole thing. $762 for 6 weeks of golf...

I would love to hear some feedback on this....

They did you a solid. They didn't have to do anything.

I don't want to drag this out… but one of the calculations was a seasonal calculation. You responded with simply "doesn't work this way."

So what am I not getting? Two people calculated it two different ways and got about the same (or less) money than you got back.

I was talking about the 12 month/year component of the membership. Like I said, after I thought about it later, I was still satisfied with the amount. I only posted this to get feedback to see if others felt the same. My initial reaction was "this works" but after mentioning it to others and getting mixed opinions, I wanted a golfer/member perspective.

My thoughts over all on the matter is that I bought a membership and used a component of it. It was fairly pro-rated for use of the club during that time. I look at it similarly as paying a lump sum for discounted use per visit. Since I left prior to using it as per the visits, I now had to pay full price instead of getting the discount because I left the deal. Combine this thought with the thought of membership price being divided up evenly over the months of the season, it is a fair deal and I am happy. I am glad the forum shares the same sentiment.

Unless there is a green fee component to the membership they really didn't have to do anything. You could have easily played more rounds in your short season than a lot of the other members played in a full season. Hell, we have guys at our club who are paying an average of $500 a round because they never play. I think they are crazy but I guess they can afford it and they just like belonging to a private club.

I agree. It was a good faith gesture.

Same thing happened to me in one of the leagues I joined. I was hurt early in the year and missed the first several weeks. I inquired about a refund or course credit and they explained some of the dues went to GHIN, I already had one, but it's part of the due regardless, and money had already been paid out to the weekly winners. The prorated my refund and it was pennies from heaven as far as I was concerned. I could have started later in league starting week 6 but I chose not to.

What happened is when you injured your wrist, you gave it a month before telling them and asking them to do whatever with your membership. Memberships are for a full year. Had I joined that club this year that I was thinking of joining I would have been in the same boat. The money comes out monthly whether you use it or not, and you pay during the winter months, although here you can play if you want to brave the soggy courses, temporary greens, and rain even though you cannot record your handicaps. New Hampshire is a different story.
