I played basketball in high school, I played college tennis, and I played indoor soccer after college. All these sports involve a lot of movement and action.

If you want to attract people that play sports that involve a lot of sitting or standing around then your only going to attract bowlers and baseball players. I used to play left field in little league and half the time I was drawing in the dirt b/c of all the down time. Then you have to wait for 8 more guys to bat before you can make it to the plate again. That is my I quit baseball after 6th grade. I enjoyed all that sitting and standing around as much as I like sitting or standing around on a golf course when the goes much past 4 hours.

I discovered golf in 2003 and in a short amount of time I got hooked. One thing I learned quickly was that if you don't tee off before 9 am on the weekend you can forget about playing fast or even a reasonable pace. I'm not expecting seniors, beginners, juniors, females, walkers, etc. to play lightning fast but how on earth can any round last more than 4 hours is beyond my comprehensive?!?!

I just want to hit the ball when I arrive at it. Is that too much to ask?

Sorry to say but I do think it is too much to ask. If you want to hit the ball when you arrive at it, it means that you want oe expect all golfers to play at your speed and or hit the ball the same distance as you. What about beginners or the elderly? You surely cannot expect, that if you have a 60 yr old 20 handicapper in front of you, that you should be able to just walk up to your ball and hit it, no? Some people play slower than others, not necessarily because they are wasting time, but often because they move slower or have to hit more shots.

I understand what you are saying, but I play golf with my 75 year old neighbor who shoots mid 90's and can't hit more than 190 off the tee box. We play frequently and we have no issue ever finishing under 4 hours ever unless we are held up. If it is just the two of us playing we finish in 3 hours. My point was 4 hours shouldn't be difficult for any group to finish regardless of age, ability, or gender. Don't you agree?

You know what?  A 9 hole course near my house just announced that the course will be used for golf & soccer golf.   According to them, soccer golf has become popular.   Is this going to be "a" trend among many?   I hope not.   I played a lot of soccer in my time and I can't imagine how golfers & soccer golfers can coexist without running into issues.  But hey, those who have seen this already, please share your thoughts.

My home course does this on their 9 holer. They play from forward tee's to holes in the rough away from the green. Only problem ive had is footgolfer's are a roudy bunch

You're correct that it's too much to expect everyone to play at the same pace.  But it is not too much to ask that people be aware of their pace and if they are slow to let faster players play through.

One of the most popular par 3 courses did this change and the same rules apply. It would be difficult for me to wait for soccer players on a regulation cpurse, though. The best soccer players can't hit more than a longer wedge.

Very true.   What shoes are they wearing?   I'd guess that regular soccer shoes will damage greens.  Are they playing soccer wearing golf shoes?  Even so, they can scuff greens while kicking.

My course has foot golf as they call it. They use one of the 3 nines for it.

They do not use the golf greens.....just the fairways and manageable rough.

Their ""teeing ground"" is adjacent to ours and is marked by orange markers.

And their ""green and holes"" are about 2-3 ft diameter, usually 50-60 yards in front and to the side of the greens.

Not in our way at all.

They wore cleats, but they had different holes that were not on he green. They were like 20" holes. One person in front of us aced one with a golf ball. Wasn't very happy about that. :-D My son and I followed along a group of soccer players, who looked like really good players.

I like the way things are now, leave the game alone. If you have time limits, play as long as you can, then go home. Enjoy the time you play. If the holes are to small, pick up your ball when you are on the green, don't putt out. If you don't like hazards and sand traps, just drop your ball in the fairway and keep playing. If you don't like the layout of a hole, skip it.If a course is too long, go to a shorter course. If you want to walk, go to a course that allows walking. If you want to ride play a course that allows you to ride.If you want to play 18 holes in 4 hours or less, find a course that enforces that pace of play and play there. If the current golf game of rules, pace of play, courses, etc., are not to your liking, simply adjust your approach to the game. Unless you are playing in a tournament, or some organized event, you play by your own rules, so try it, play by your own rules and maybe you will enjoy the game more.

I was listening to Hank Haney radio this morning and I found the topic very interesting. He was talking about the need to get younger people involved and he suggested several things: - allowing music in the carts - speeding up pace of play - 12 hole rounds - changing the dress code He started by referencing an article about the state of golf in Australia. Apparently Greg Norman suggested some if not all the things mentioned above. He told a story about the time he invited Kid Rock to his private club to play golf. The course was basically empty except for a handful of golfers. Haney and Kid Rock were deep into their round far from the clubhouse. Kid Rock turned his hat backwards and hit his tee shot. Two shots later a guy comes out on a cart from the clubhouse. He tells Haney that his guest must turn his hat forwards. Haney asked the guy how they even knew how Kid Rock was wearing his hat b/c he hadn't only been wearing it that way for 5 minutes. Apparently one of the few people playing several fairways over called into the clubhouse to complain. Apparently Kid Rock was very respectful and turned the hat forwards. After the worker left he asked Haney how in the world are they going to get young players interested if everyone in the game is so stuck up? Anyway I found the show today very interesting. I definitely don't care about the dress code and pace of play seems to be good only before 8am. I'm not for 12 hole rounds. I would like to listen to music sometimes on the course, but I think that opens a whole can of worms. I'm not sure how other golfers would like listening to Slayer, Metallica, and Black Sabbath while playing with me. You would also get into people playing music too loud or trying to drown out bad music like country music. :)

It's a private course, if Kid Rock wants to wear his hat backwards he can play muni's and public courses that don't care how people dress or wear their hats.  The person who reported them probably has no idea who Kid Rock is.

I personally think wearing your hat backwards looks stupid.  They should have probably kicked Furyk out of the FedEx cup finals when he had his hat on backwards. :)

I don't like the flat billed hats either.  I still don't really care what other people wear.

Problem with dress code is simple, "you can please some of the people some of the time but not all the people all of the time". If a club changes the policy to allow, lets say for arguments sake, tracksuit bottoms, then they are sure to get enough complaints from "veteran" menbers to change it back.

Im sure at many clubs there will be the "old Guard" of established members who the decision makers listen to,

As far as im concerned as long as you dont look scruffy then all's good. Relax the code a little. Much better than going back to flat caps and plus fours :-D
