I "feel" like I've been hitting it really well the last few times out. The last nine I played was on the back-9 at Bent Tree GC in Sunbury, OH.

Hole 10: (par 5) Smoked my drive just off the fairway on the left rough. On the second shot the ball was in rough and below my feet, so I just hit chippy (positional?) 5-wood to about 135 yards. knocked it on with a 9 iron, two putts... this game's easy.

Hole 11: (par 4) Again, roped my drive, this time dead straight. A 100 yard gap wedge and two putts later, I'm on a roll.

Hole 12: (par 4) Hit a fairway finder tee shot to the center of the fairway, 125 out. This time P-wedge to about 18 feet. 3 putts later and I'm 1 over. (In fairness hole 12 might be the toughest green to putt on the course.) No excuses, it was a 3-putt bogey. ... Argh... I'm 1 over after 3 straight GIR's.

Hole 13: (long par 3), over-cooked a 5 iron. Pin high but well to the left. Pitched it on over a bunker with my 60, two putts later and I'm now 2 over.

Hole 14: (par 4) The tees were way back on this hole. Tattooed my drive, but it found the pond to the left. Argh... Take a drop, hit 8 iron from 150, the ball spins back away from the flag on the sloped green leaving me a 20 foot putt straight up the hill from just off the green. I miss the resulting 5 footer and end up with a double. That one hurt. Argh... I'm 4 over.

Hole 15: (par 5) Again, the tees are way-way-way in the back. My drive is safe from the water, but finds the bunker on the right. I advance the ball with a 6 iron. Then I hit 8-iron to about 9 feet. I leave the birdie putt on the lip. 2 putt par and I remain 4 over.

Hole 16: (par 4) Once more the tees are way back. But I hit an absolutely perfect drive. I'm left with 120 over water to front pin location. I hit P wedge... oops. I pured it. It goes like 140. It's on the green, but I'm 60 feet from the hole. The putt is downhill all the way. I leave it 10 feet short. I leave the next one an inch or two away. DANG! Another 3-putt bogey. 5 over.

Hole 17: (short par 3) Worse swing of the day. Hit it fat and short of the green. I bump it on the green to about 5 feet, miss the five footer, another bogey. Now I'm 6 over.

Hole 18: (par 4) Pretty close to perfect drive. Hit it past all the trouble. (There are bunkers in the middle of the dog leg on this hole. You can play out safely to the right of the bunkers or pound it over them. In this case I went over.) I had a P-wedge to the green. Hit the wedge to about 9-10 feet. Converted the putt for birdie. YAY! I finished 5 over.

So overall I shot a 5 over 41 which is very solid for me:

  • I hit 5 out of 7 fairways. One was just left in the rough. One was a little farther left in the water.
  • I hit 6 GIR's. 2 NGIR's. 1 hole I had to take a drop after my tee shot found the water.
  • The putter was unimpressive. 2 three-putts, and one that would have been a three-putt but the first putt was off the green. I didn't putt as well as I should have. I did finish with a made birdie putt on the last hole.

I think my game is solidifying... if that makes any sense. Here are my last (10) Nine-hole rounds, all at Bent Tree GC, some on the front, some on the back:

42, 37, 41, 40, 47, 41, 36, 43, 39, and then a 41 last week.

I hate the back 9 there. There's some really bad holes.

Shot a 40 (adjusted 39)

Hit the ball better when I got my head out of my a**. I go three holes saying, straight arms with big turn and then arms down. I finally forced my self to do this on hole 5. Like exaggerate it. I go like 1 over in the last 5 holes. 😭

Today was something.  I shot 42-42 = 84, but wow did I have a way about me.  I hit a total of one fairway all day (hole 2).  Granted, I wasn't that far off the fairway most of the time when I missed.  I hit ten (10) GIR, another six near-GIR (LSW definition), and two greenside bunkers.  I had 18/18 GIRP (Broadie book definition -- essentially, green or collar for par attempt, all of mine were green).    Only one double bogey all day, and that was on #16.

I have no idea what's going on with my driver.  I'm hitting my other clubs well, including a fantastic 19-degree hybrid on #9 to hit that green in two.  I haven't signed off the ShotScope round yet, so I don't know how the SG:D went.  I would bet I have a pretty good SG:A number for that round, despite dumping two approach shots into bunkers (both with a 7-iron).

Shot a 38, 2 over par.

I just went out and tried to be more of an athlete. Fling the club back. Hit target lines. Things got a bit wonky for two holes, then I shortened the back swing and finished with a par on probably the second toughest hole on the course.

Tied my season low with a 79 at an away course.  Nothing spectacular on the front (3 pars, 6 bogeys), but on the back I had 3 birdies (should have been 4 as I missed a putt from 5').   This round almost dropped one full shot from my index....from a 13.4 to a 12.6

Also....just a on side note, I have a consecutive 72 hole streak currently on playing the same ball.

Shot a 48, with a 9 on the first hole hitting two OB.

tonight was strange. Strikes felt good, but result with the driver was a strange slice.

Off the tee was bad. Irons were ok. Putting was bad. Short game was average. 1 out of 4 is not good. I need a range session. Things are rusty.

Today was my first time playing golf in Arizona.  I shot a 137.  It's been a long time (prior to today) since I've been happy with a 137, probably about 19 years since that summer when I first got started playing and was happy I was under 150 (before I even knew how to swing).

But what makes today different was it was 137 for 36 holes, albeit 36 holes of executive golf (total par 126).

My putting barely beat out the 20 handicap mark on strokes gained (predictably, most of the strokes I lost putting were inside 10', something I acknowledge is a glaring weakness and is something I am working on), while tee to green was a little better than the 5 handicap mark.  Don't worry, I won't get too in my head -- it was a short enough course (a little under 3700 yards) that I didn't have an approach with anything longer than a 7-iron (except two times hitting driver on a par-4 to within pitching distance).  I hit some good shots with a putter from off the green too, but I think ShotScope counts those as short game (with good reason).

Poor scores:  one 5 (a bogey on a par-4) and one 6 (double on a par-4, after hitting water).  The rest 3s and 4s.  Three birdies for the day too :-)  No par-5s on the course.

For 35 of 36 holes, I had near-GIR or better.  On 32 of those holes, I took my par attempt from on the green.  The only three where I didn't (of those 35) were, naturally, the three birdies I made.

Round 1: 10 GIR, 8 near-GIR.  And no, I'm not claiming this as my second "no sixes" round -- I think that challenge requires a regulation course anyway.

Round 2: 6 GIR and 5 collars!  Plus 6 near-GIR that weren't collars.

On a related note, I found a course near my folks (who I'm visiting this week and a bit next month too) that has a well-maintained executive course and inexpensive all-you-care-to-golf after 10am with cart.  I think I paid $25 for today's round.   I doubt they have that deal when the weather dips back into double digits though.

Shot an 87 at Reserve Run.

popping up and fatting drives. Short game and putter were good. One putted my last 5 out of 6 holes. Shanks came back (three of them) with the irons. Low point control was non-existent even when I make shorter swing. Just couldn’t figure out a shot. Which surprised me since my irons yesterday were decent.

I played Power Ranch Golf Club in Gilbert AZ today, shooting 87 (posts as 86) after hitting my opening tee shot out of bounds.  Relative to a 10 hcp, though, I still had -0.45 strokes gained compared to a 10 handicap, despite an O.B. tee shot and a 120 yard pop up on another hole.  Course is very highly recommended, I had a great time and will go there again when I have the chance.

44 on the front Ranch CC, Westminster CO. Started at 536 and it was dark by hole 9. Summer fading fast but it’s been hot, course is baked. Over the hole is impossible unless it’s just over. A few 3 putts.

Shot 92 on Saturday at home course (Howick GC) and then 89 yesterday at South Head GC. The ground here is still quite wet as we exit winter and I really struggled to get good connection with my irons, particularly wedges. Must have chunked a score of shots, very disheartening. Something to work on.

As an aside, South Head is where Steve Williams is/was a member and they have photos in the clubhouse of a visit from Tiger in ~2006. Nice claim to fame for an otherwise unremarkable country course.

Shot a 47 then a 37 for an 84.

Just couldn’t find the ball for the front nine. Just felt bad. Just forced myself to make a few swing feels and made some putts on the back nine.

Shot a 44. A lot of good, bad and ugly.

Lost ball on 11. Hit a tree on 12 that left me with 240 to the green. Three putted hole 13. Chunked an iron then a chip on 15. My 2nd on hole 18 was on a severe slope, and I toe shanked it 100 yards right of the green.

Scored a personal best 75 (+3) on Sunday (35-40).  4 birdies, 1 double, and 3 penalty strokes. It was a hot day for the Bay Area, so fatigue set in after about 12 holes and I faded a bit down the stretch.

Played from middle tees with my group instead of one tee back like I usually do, and longest GIR approach was a 9 iron. A decent job of keeping the ball in play off the tee combined with short irons/wedges into greens made for a stress free round. Hot and dry conditions resulted in some nice roll out on drives. Longest approach into a par-5 was 175 yards. Short game and putting were good.
