Stats (Par 70 course - only 2 par 5's):

7 Fairways
15 Greens
31 Total Putts
27 GIR Putts
4 Birdies
10 Pars
4 Bogeys

Shot 36-34-70 on the home course yesterday (played at around 6500). I continued to hit the ball really well. I struggled a bit to put the ball in the hole though. I only made one birdie putt outside three feet and missed about 4 birdies inside 20 feet. My putting stroke felt a little off. Overall I'm pretty happy with the round though.

I've strung quite a few good rounds together and hit my new driver (905s) really well. I only had 7 fairways, but a few of the missed ones were in good spots and only by a couple yards. I think after a couple rounds, I'll straighten it out even more. The 15 greens was my best so far this year.

I'll be on the putting green over lunch today to work some things out. I have league tonight and want to make sure I correct my stroke.

Fairways and Greens.

...Lost 2 balls quite early...

That's the absolute BEST round summary I ever read. Do you know what's the best IMHO? That even with this content you managed to put two smiley's in there. That means you know what golf (non-professional at least) is all about.

I agree, great summary. It's amazing. I have quit golfing each week for the last 10 years and I still go out there. It will get better. The only problem is when it does get better, the expectations increase and then it gets way worse. Last year I shot a 51. It was the first time in more than 4 years that i was in the 50's. I almost had a stroke. I actually followed it up with a 50, 48 and a 53. I was ready to throw my clubs in the lake. Then one day I was talking to my wife's grandfather who used to play with us every Sunday until diabetes caused him to lose both legs. I told him how lousy I was playing and he pointed out that I used to be a lot worse than that. I remember routinely shooting in the 60's and even with that I was probably moving the ball and taking generous drops. I still hate golf with almost the same passion that I love it. I can't wait to play again.

By the way, last night I shot 40 (31 par). Tied the guy I was playing gross, but I was giving him a shot so he took the two points. My wife played well to start, but struggled down the stretch and shot a 53. His wife shot a career best 44 and they took all 6 points. I won a new gap wedge Sunday and I had never even hit it before last night, so it was a bit of an adventure. Probably not the best idea to put it in play on the first hole. I fluffed my pitch shot on the way to a tripple. I decided to take my lumps and made good chips on 2 and 3 to save par. Chunked it on 4 en route to a double. Hit it again on 5 to save par. Good shot, but bad putt on 6 for bogey. Left it sort on 7 from 90 yards for double. Stuck it from 60 yards on 8 lipped out the birdey. Knocked it over the green from 90 on the last, but hit a flop with my Vokey to 2 feet and saved par. I am going to the range today to try and get the distances down with it. I am looking forward to Sunday. I'll report back Monday with my low score for the year.

League night. Stats (Par 36 playing about 3200):

4 Fairways
8 Greens
15 Total Putts
13 GIR Putts
3 Birdies
5 Pars
1 Bogey

Shot 34 with a water ball on the first Par 5. Hit the green after taking my drop and made par. Missed a 3 footer for par on #4. Other than that, the round was pretty clean. Hit some good shots and drained a nice birdie putt on #5 from about 25 feet. The other two birds were kick-in's. Was 1 over after 4 but finished strong with 3 birdies on the last 5 holes.

We had league yesterday, which means I play 9 holes as a warmup first, and then play in league. I normally play a lot looser in the pre-roudn warmups - I fire at every flag, I hit shots I wouldn't normally hit and don't really line up any putts. I'm trying to find the "edge" that day for me - how hard I can push myself to pull off shots. Last week I found the edge to the tune of a 43, then shot 36 in league.

Today I shot about a 41 or so, then hit every fairway and every GIR in league and made par after par after par. Literally - thunder and lightning cancelled league after 3 holes. But I was hitting it really well and looking for my second straight 36 in league (on the opposite nine). Won two of the three holes too.

Played another twilight round yesterday at the home course:

72
9 Fairways
11 Greens
30 Putts
19 Putts/GIR
4 Birdies

I played pretty good. Started with two birds on the first two holes. Gave one back on the next but settled in. I birdied the hardest hole on the course, #11 which was playing about 470. Stuffed a 7-iron to 8 feet and rolled it in. Proceeded to double the next hole, but finished OK. I made a few bogeys by mis-clubbing long on a couple holes. Thought I had covered the flag only to be over the green....

Anyway, I'm still striking the ball well (still absolutely LOVE the 905s) and the putting is still good. Not great though. I missed a few makeable putts, but putted OK. I should be around 28 putts per round...so I have a little work there.

Shot 80 today in some 95° heat. Fun. Was just about dead on the last, oh, four holes or so. I played with the new Mezza Monsa with AGSI putter, an r7, an r7 3W, and the new rescue (19°) with weights. They're not bad, but it took awhile to get used to them. More details later on those...

Anyway, 4/14 fairways (toldja it took awhile to get used to them!), which would be 8 if we counted shots within a yard of the fairway. 7/18 GIR, which would be 11 or 12 if we counted things in the fringe. My course has somewhat smaller fairways and greens than most.

32 putts, which tells you a few things: I wasn't getting up and down very well (three times, one of which was from the sand), I wasn't putting my irons too close, and I wasn't putting well. I like the Mezza Monza, but I wasn't getting the speed down very well.

I think I only lost two shots due to the sweat that built up from the time I took my stance to the time I swung the club. There's a reason I like corded grips, and none of the clubs had 'em. Can you say "hard left"?

I shot a cool 85 today! It was pretty frustrating in the sense that if I would have putted any better then it would have been REALLY REALLY GOOD!

I shot the best 97 I have ever had at the Patty Jewett course in Colorado Springs (3rd oldest course west of the Mississippi. I usually don't shoot this high but I'll take it after starting with a 55 on the front 9 and ending with a 42 on the back 9. It took me some time to get my irons working.

You want to talk loco?

Shot a 75 on Sunday hitting 6 fairways and 4 greens. I had 10 putts on the front nine and shot -1. The putter went a little cold on the back side, but I still finished with 25 putts.

It was the worst I'd hit the ball in a while, but I figured out that I was looping my swing a bit (out to in) and hit some hooks. The last few holes it was better. I also got some pretty horrible bounces and breaks.

Just goes to show how low you can go when the putter is working for you.

i shot my best 5 over on the back 9 last thursday. the front 9 i almost lost 3 balls at the second hole and 3 putted almost every hole....

yea i wasn't ready to play that day but i cooled down towards the middle.
what i find very reassuring is the fact that i wasn't satisfied with that score, even though it was my best (i'm still a newbie)... i missed a 3 foot birdie putt on a 220 yard par 3.... best tee shot of my life gone down the drain...

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
