anyone used one of these contraptions? Did it actually help you or make you more confused?

I used one and could make it "work" in that it didn't break down at any time during my swing but I'm not sure if it made a bit of difference for me. I was using the medicus driver and it was really heavy and, well... thats about all I can say. It was reassuring to know that I might possibly have a half way decent swing but I really doubt that based on my performance on the course... so there you go.

I wouldn't buy one... maybe the iron is different.

A friend of mine has the iron and I used it on the range for a bit. I like the concept of the club, but could not hit it at all. I had a hitch in my swing at the time and it kept breaking on me.

If you could pick one up used, it may be worth it. I wouldn't pay full price though.

Fairways and Greens.

I hear Jim Furyk uses the thing religiously

Jim Furyk...lol.

I have the medicus iron and use it only once in a while now. The only good thing about it was the fact that as a beginner I was able to understand how the club should travel on the swing plane. I wouldn't buy it...I'll sell you mine though.

My instructor bought the Medicus Driver and it helped me A LOT on my tempo. I kept snapping it right at the top of my downswing cuz I was rushing it.
It also DOES help with swing plane but I didn't have any problems with that, but I've seen beginners mess it up.
Don't buy it though, see if anyone you meet or see occassionally has one and just use theirs for like 5 minutes to get the feel of things

I tried a neibors and I dident see what the big deal was about. It kept breaking on my takeaway but even when i slowed it down the thing kept breaking. I finally slowed it down so much that it was a workout. I know if you go too quick it can hurt the overall part of the swing but this thing had me going so slow that the group behind me would start yelling at me too hurry up!

if ur on the right plane, it doesnt really matter how fast u snap it
ME, however, wenever i rush it, i always pull it over the top or too much on the inside so it snaps
u also have to be square before u bring it down the right swing plane
as long as ur game is doing fine, i dont think u should really worry about what the medicus tells u

I have both the 5 iron and driver.  It really does help you groove a swing.  My daughter is now using them.  She got very frustrated that it kept breaking on her.  Now her tempo and swing path is much better.

Yes I have!   A long time ago (I was 18) I worked at a resort golf course.  The assistant pro and I were good friends, and he would give me lessons, and a lot of times made me work with the Medicus.  It WILL straighten out a LOT of BS in your swing (single plane).   I was in awe at the time of how powerfully he could hit a ball with it....amazing.

I picked one up used a years ago and I think it's a good tool for a beginner to teach tempo and swing plane. It opened my eyes to what my hands should be doing during my swing.  I forgot I even had it so I might just dig it out of the garage and see if I can swing it.

I don't think I'd buy one new but if you can get one used, go for it.

I have a hinged 5 iron and can swing it without it "breaking" but it did absolutely nothing for my swing.

I have the driver and iron.  The driver worked well and really forced me to slow my back swing and swing smoothly.  I liked the driver and would recommend it.  The iron was a different story.  I was never really able to hit it very well, but maybe I'll get it out of the basement and give it another try this weekend.

I was just watching the Golf Channel, and the informercial for the Medicus driver came on. I see some here that say the driver could be good and others who say it's worthless. If I know of a used lefty club that I can buy for a decent price, should I try one? I'm VERY new to the game...just took it up this summer and have played only 45 holes. I've hit a few decent drives, but for the most part I have a pretty serious slice. As a newbie to the game, is this something that can help me straighten out my swing? To be honest, I have no idea what is causing my slice.

My results exactly!

Flyman:  I bought a lefty out of a junk barrel, and a right 5 iron. Heated the heads over the gas stove, pulled them off the shafts and epoxied the right head on the Medicus.  Waste of time.

I've got one. Used it religiously when I first got it. Got me back on plane. Now I just use it occasionally when I start getting sloppy. Really helped me out a lot.

It's not who you are in life, but what you do and how you treat others that makes the difference.......

For me it was a good thing.  Helped me develop a "transition" (short pause if you prefer) at the top instead of yanking the club down.  I used the driver because that was the club that gave me the most trouble on the course.

    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
    • Day 580 - 2026-05-04 Played eight holes. Sometimes golf kicks you in the nuts. 😉
    • I work with a lot of golfers who want more shaft lean at impact, who currently have AoAs that range from +2° to -2°, and who love to see the handle lower and more "in front of their trail thigh" from face-on at P6. And a lot of these golfers try to solve the issue by working on the downswing. They do something to drag the handle forward. Or they just leave their right thigh farther back so the same handle location "looks" farther forward. Or they move the ball back in their stance. Or they push themselves down into the ground to get the handle lower and increase (decrease?) their AoA (to be more negative). The real fix is often to get wider in the backswing. To do LESS in the backswing. To hinge less, fold the trail arm less, abduct the trail arm less. I had a case of this over the weekend. Before, the player had 110° of trail elbow bend, "lifted" his trail humerus only a few degrees, etc. The club traveled quite a bit around him, and he tended to "pick" the ball from the fairways. In the "after" swings below (which are mild exaggerations — this golfer does not need to end up at < 70° of elbow bend. These were slower backswings with "hit it as hard as you normally would" intent downswings), you can see that he bent his elbow about 70° instead of 110° and lifted his right arm an extra ~15° or more. You can't see how much less this moved his hands across his chest (right arm abduction), but it was also decreased. His hands stayed more "in front of" his right shoulder rather than traveling "beside" them so much. The two swings look like this: The change at P6, without talking about the downswing one little bit (outside of him telling me that he tends to pick the ball), is remarkable: Without 110° of elbow bend to get out (which he gets to 80°, a loss of 30°), the golfer actually loses slightly less elbow bend (70 - 50 = 20), but delivers 30° less elbow bend, lowering the handle and letting the elbow get "in front of" the rib cage… because it never got "behind" or "beside" the rib cage. If you look at this video showing the before/afters of P6, you'll note the handle location (both vertically and horizontally) and the shoulders (the ball is in the same place in these frames). This golfer's path was largely unaffected (still pretty straight into the ball, < 3° path and often < 1.5°), but his AoA jumped to -5° ± 2°. I've always said, and in talking with other instructors they agree and feel similarly, that we spend a lot of time working on the backswing. This is another example of why.
