I played yesterday and it was 48F, cloudy with a 10+ wind. All it needed was a long sleeve top. I don't get that cold and once I'm moving, I'm fine.

@Golfingdad, sometimes it actually gets colder here in the PM when with wind kicks up. After I played yesterday, it dropped to 41F and we had snow flurries!

If you can get a pair of loose mittens with elastic or a drawstring around the wrist, that's very good for between shots. I used to have one of those.

Generally for me though, the answer is "don't."

1. Loosen up and get muscles warm before play

2. Stay Warm - layer clothing - T-Shirt or Compression type, long sleeve shirt, sweater, outerwear that is wind or rain resistant, heavier pants, silk or wool socks, use winter gloves, and beanie to keep head warm since your warmth will leak out if head is not covered.

3. Keep an extra ball or two in your pants pocket to keep it warm. Use softer compression balls - easy to do now since soft compression is in style even in urethane

4. If it's not windy, a walk is preferred with a lite bag. With wind, I like a cart.

5. Bring water, and snack - cold uses up energy faster in your body

6. Greens are typically dormant and faster, lies are tighter, so beware.

Yesterday in upstate NY, my son and I were finishing our chilly round and it started snowing. Squall started when we teed off on the 18th. By the time we hit our second shot it was sticking to our push cart tires. Makes putting interesting. Then the sun came out and we played a couple more holes. I just had jeans, a sweatshirt and a windbreaker on. Walking is warm.

There are five keys to staying warm playing golf in cold weather:

1. Layers, the thinner material in 4 to 5 layers is best.

2. Winter Golf Gloves... Your hands need to stay warm throughout the round.

3.Walk, don't ride and walk fast.

4. Knit cap or Winter hat, I'll wear a winter beanie when it's colder than 40° F when I play, your head is the most important part of your body to keep warm, make sure you wear a hat that covers your ears...

5. Perhaps most importantly, thick socks or two pairs of socks... Those thick wool socks are good when it's cold out, so thank grandma for sending them when you Golf in 17° weather in January.

Its finally starting to get reasonably cool here in Virginia.  Yesterday was forecast to be in the mid to high-40s early, warming up to maybe 60.  I started wearing enough layers:

Very light silk base

UA light sip-front

Wool vest

Wool outerlayer, lined with Goretex

Two-ply windshirt

I warmed up wearing my rain gloves to keep the wind off my hands, along with my stocking cap to cover my ears.  I could swing with only minimal restriction.  By tee time I was wearing my regular golf glove and a normal golf hat.  By the end of the round, I had shed the windshirt and the wool/goretex sweater.  For cold weather, nothing beats good layering.
