I have had this idea floating around for a bit.

I know Erik and Mike love their Newport Cup...

I thought we could attempt to organize a Hacker Open... The format would be Modified Stableford (not the International's old scoring)... Scoring would be as follows.

Doubles and blow-ups: 0 pts

Bogeys: 1 pt

Pars: 2 pts.

Birdies: 4 pts

Eagles: 7 pts.

Double Eagles: 10 pts

Condor: 15 pts. (Though that would be a Net 1 on a par-5)

It would be handicapped for anyone with a verifiable GHIN handicap a letter from a course official if you don't have one is fine as long as we don't turn this into the Sandbagger Championship.

Would anyone be interested?

We'd then prove, highest score wins :-P

We could always dovetail this with the John Deere Classic held each July* in the Quad Cities area.

In conjunction with the JDC, the Quad Cities advertise they have 35 golf courses in the area.

The Quad Cities would be a fairly central location for TST (USA members), and decent motel rooms can be had for less than $100 a night.

@onthehunt526 , could we get Tour Edge to be a co-sponsor with TST?

*Note: The 2016 JDC will be played Aug. 8-14 to coordinate better with the year's Olympic games.

That's a GREAT Idea!!!! Especially if we can get Tour Edge involved... If Erik and Mike would go with it... I think David Glod would jump at the idea... especially considering they'll be right there, For the John Deere Classic anyway, they could swing on by or give us all a Tour of the facility.

We did something like this with a regional outing that Eric put together for us in Norwalk, OH earlier this year. It came off really well from my perspective.

It would be a fun experience if we could get enough guys together, maybe the CONUS level is striving a little far... But hell, we can dream right?

  • 4 weeks later...

Well this is probably a stupid thought (but no one has thought of it)...

Erik and Mike have the Newport Cup for the guys who are basically 70's shooters. (It's a great concept, and love the idea, so I'm borrowing it)...

Maybe us 80's and 90's shooters (and players with scores all over the lot) should have a Hacker's Cup (It sounds rubbish, if you have a better name for it let me know)...

Same concept as the Newport Cup, except with 80s and 90s shooters, (hell if your a high 90s shooter, I'll take you)

(as long as the East can wear red like the NHL I'll be happy)...

If interested let me know... Any suggestions would be great too, 8-man teams would be fun...

Thanks,

Shane

A cup for those who suck. I guess that's a bit harsh.

If it's in my tri-state area (Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana) I'd be interested. I can't afford much more travel than that.

If you just want to get an outing together, I don't see why you can't try to drum up some interest and go from there. A lot of regional TST outings happen throughout the year in different places. I suppose you could have a trophy for it and everything, too.

I'm in if it's in San Diego.  ;-)

Seriously though, it could be scheduled for the winter at a place where people would enjoy traveling too.  Perhaps a lot of folks in cold weather climates like to make golf travel plans in the winter.  (Not necessarily San Diego, though I vote for San Diego).

Subscribing just to follow along while I daydream of the 2016 season.

Edit: I just checked and it looks like the John Deere Classic is in Silvis, Illinois. A bit over 200 miles for me which makes the daydream a little more viable. Time to visit the range.

    • Maybe this is what you were getting at?  Doing some math. Comparing JumboMax versus Tour Velvet, standard size in both.  I got the force required using the JumboMax grip, to achieve the same rotational acceleration as the Tour Velvet, is about 1.37 more for the JumboMax grip. Interestingly, the Jumbomax grip is about 17% larger than the Tour Velvet, and 17% lighter for the standard size. I just substituted out the radius and mass of the JumboMax as a ratio of the Tour Velvet's mass and radius. This allows me to cancel out the mass and radius and get a ratio for the force. If you need 100 (force units of your choice) to achieve a certain rotational acceleration, you will need 137 (force units of your choice).  There was another thread on the forum about offset, where it basically just delays closure by some stupidly small amount. A lot of fun math there.  Most golfers have to go from about 90 degrees open clubface at A4 to square at A7. So, having a grip that requires more force to close that clubface might not be the best idea pending the golf swing.  A question is, since the clubface is open at A4, and square at A7. Does that mean you want most of the closure to happen from A4 to let say A6, and not A6 to A7, for better consistently (less timing at impact). Just a thought.
    • This reminds me of the old game Telephone, where someone tells a story to someone, that person tells it to the next person, and after a few re-tellings you see how badly mangled the story gets.  Most golfers learn the rules in a similar fashion, learning from someone who really doesn't know the rules themselves.  This isn't really helped by the fact that many golf professionals aren't all that knowledgeable about the rules.  In addition, most golfers have been told that the Rules are SO complicated and SO difficult to read that they never try to read for themselves. Now, having vented a bit, is there anything in particular you'd like to read?
    • I hope to see more posts from you, @DaveP043, related to your Rules experiences. I was looking at a thread on a golf site. Reading some of the comments and discussion on a Provisional/Lost/Unplayable situation was like listening to fingernails on a chalk board. So many comments such as, "You MUST search for your ball" and "If you find your ball in an unplayable spot, just go play your provisional." It is always amazing to me how little we golfers know of the Rules of Golf.
    • I could use the old man's excuse ... I am on a fixed income. That would be a fib. The event sounds like a great time. My wife and I will be in Brazil for 2 weeks in May and I can't fit this trip into the schedule.
