Seeing as I'm planning on swapping out my cheap old wedges out, I was thinking about getting two of these wedges. . .

FYI, they are non-conforming.

Seriously?

You have better options. This wedge is a band-aid. We have technique galore on this site... you can do it.

Yes, I've been working on using the techniques, but I still get that bad wedge shot at least one or two times a round in bunker/tight lie/or whatever.

Just a thought. . .

We all do. And perhaps we all don't use 14 clubs, so you might have an extra slot.

Don't you hate that?

The last time I was only 35 yards making my second shot with the longest drive I'd ever made on that hole, and ended with a double because I bladed the ball 100 yards into some wood chips and the ensuing other shots needed to get back on the green and 2 putt. . .

The issue is that the club is non-comforming according to Mike, so, looking for something to replace my 60/8 LW. The "54" appears okay except for the stress crack in the hosel from "successfully" attempting to converting an old 52 into the 54. . .

Not the club though ... those issues, from experience, are from poor rhythm and tension -- turn that into better tempo and relaxation.

I was thinking the same thing.

Come to think of it the guy I was talking to had weird wide sole irons as well. . .didn't look like conforming equipment was high on his list of priorities. . .

I think for the XE1, it's the grooves that make them non-conforming.

That kind of explains why they can get enough spin with a light swing. I'm now looking at the Ping offerings. . .

Gosh, if you put 65 degrees on a wedge, give it the KBS Hi-Rev 2.0 shaft (more active tip, more spin), then you might be able to do the same with regulation grooves. But you don't know until you know...

I'm surprised they still had to mess around with illegal grooves at 65° of loft. Seems like overkill on paper.

It's likely marketed towards high handicap golfers, women and older golfers who don't generate a lot of swing speed so the illegal grooves give them more spin by providing more space for sand and grass to fill so good contact can be made with the ball.

The USGA is very responsive to email questions. They told me it was nonconforming due to "groove issues" They added, the responsibility for using conforming equipment is with the golfer.

Isn't 2024 the deadline for USGA groove issues for amateurs?

    • the rules have changed, but this would fall under 11.2 in the current rules.  General Penalty to any player who deliberately deflects a ball in motion, and you must replay the putt.
    • Day 250 4-29 Getting chest through with speed on downswing and wrist arch. Also worked on some moving the pelvis slightly away in the backswing. Feel like im going too fast and long, looks like it on the recordings too.
    • Interesting that it's no penalty, but then again, I can't imagine someone would purposefully put their foot out there in this situation or one like it.  And then there was the time someone purposefully deflected his own ball during a major, but that's very different too. The only time I can recall a ball I hit hitting another player or their equipment was ages ago -- over a decade and a half ago.  I had a 3' putt for an 89 and someone (a random pairing, not someone I knew) decided it was a good time for goaltending practice.  That wouldn't fall under this rule, though (and it wasn't in a tournament anyway). Thanks for continuing to share these, Dave!  I always find these interesting.
    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
