I feel as though I am staring my takeaway with my hands first and continue to the top of my back swing. This is also causing a problem with my wrist hinge not happening till late in my back swing. Would I be better off staring everything with my elbows to have a better back swing and wrist hinge?  Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you looked on video? What you feel may not be what's really happening.

This is not necessarily a problem. Some hinge earlier, some later.

Another problem is that the takeaway is below the plane line of the shaft.

Also not always a problem. Check out Steve Stricker below. The reason I'm pointing these out is because I sometimes focus on perceived issues in my swing (I tend to bring it a bit inside on the backswing too) that may actually be fine, and am bought back to focus on my priorities by my instructor.

That's a terrible angle video. I'm in a meeting and will add more to this later. If I forget someone ping me.

just before @iacas comes back, i will reiterate that the angle is awful.  its from so far up that it exaggerates how under plane the BS is.

also, taking it back with just the hands at first can definitely lead to yanking the club back and under plane.

I have been taking lessons for a while now and I have been taught that my take-away and backswing should start with the hips and shoulders first.  A drill my instructor uses a lot is the 3/4 swing chip shot, anchoring the arms against your chest and keeping the hands with the forward wrist flat or inline (5sk Key #3) throughout the swing, back and forward. This has helped me quite a bit in not starting with the hands or arms.

It's a horrible angle. Steve Stricker pretty much takes it up the plane from any sort of normal angle.

Taking the clubhead well under the plane (like it appears Stricker is) is due to two things: 1) not hinging the wrists, but more so, 2) rolling the forearms.

Practice taking the clubhead back by doing the opposite of those two things: keep the trail hand more "on top" of the grip and hinge the wrists WAY more quickly.

Unless you're Ray Floyd, most people will have trouble re-routing the club properly when it's under plane on the backswing.

Wouldn't have guessed, thanks.

Out of curiosity, how does one tell when an angle is off? Is it how the body is lined up?

The camera should be centered on the toe line not the target line or ball. When filming your own swing, the simplest way to get it right is to lay an alignment rod against your toes and then set the camera up so that the rod is centered in the shot and is nice and verticle to the frame. Then just make sure your toes are up against the rod.

I would add that having the camera at set up hand height helps too.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
