We have a weekend group that plays for skins and we have a hole in one/double eagle pot.  The pot has grown over the past 4 years and we haven't had even a close call to a hole in one or double eagle.  We are considering a reward for certain good play during a round in order to use some of the pot money.  For instance...4 or 5 birdies gets $50.  4 sandies earns $20.  Eagle one of the longer par 5's...$25. Birdie 4 of 5 par 3's (our course is a par 71 w/5 par 3's)...$25.

Anyway...I'm looking for other things that we can track so players can get some of the pot money...any good ideas?  Our group is usually 4-8 golfers and we play on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Thanks,

Well there's always the classics:

longest drive (on a par 5)

closest to the pin (on a par 3)

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

Thanks greg...I thought about that...and on days when it's 5 or less golfers (yea, sometimes we are 5 in one group, but we play quicker than 3) it would be easy.  It may be a  bit harder to determine who was longer/closer w/two groups.  A piece of paper staked w/a tee would work (assuming is was marked by the 1st group).

I'm also thinking about, in month (8 rounds)...whoever has the lowest total score for the #1 handicap hole wins $25.

I'd let the money keep building for the hole in one and double eagle pot.  If you guys are 12 handicaps it's just a matter of time before someone gets one.

I would avoid contests that reward players with certain skills.  Long drive obviously would be limited to the longest hitters unless by some fluke you are all equal.  Same with closest to the pin (accurate iron play).

Also, don't make the goal too hard so that you repeat the same situation as the Ace/Albatross award.  Birdies on 4 of the 5 par 3's sounds pretty ambitious.

Maybe a bonus for low round of the month (or year, or day)?  Hole out a sand shot?  First birdie of the day?

Play your skins game but also have individual quota with the + points worth $ each. Play until the pot is at a level you like then stop.

My group also has a pool, buts it was a one time entry fee of $20.00, we have a group of about 30 guys, with about 20 playing at any one time, so the pot was still a nice number.

We have some older folks that are getting near retirement.  We've already had some move away and the "close to retirement" folks may move away soon as well.

I guess I'm (as holder of the box) looking for a way to distribute some of the money.  I'm trying to get new folks into the group, but I don't want the original group leaving w/out getting some of the money that was put in...if that makes sense.

A hole in one by definition can happen at anytime...I'd just like to spread the money around.

If they retire or move away one option would be to reimburse them for the money they paid in and leave the rest ride for the ace or double eagle.

Sorry...does this mean that the person w/the most skins gets extra from the pot?  Or is it a "play better than your normal score" type reward?

Thanks.

or sandy...getting par on hole when one of your shots is from a sand bunker, either from a fairway bunker or a green side bunker.

With eight people you can have your own little match play tournament spread out over a couple of weekends. Payouts for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd( 60%, 30%, and 10% of the pot)

Use the pot money for pot?  ;-)

(JK, I live in CO.)

How about using the pot money to fund a special outing to one of the nicer, i.e, more expensive, courses in the area?

I had a similar thought to @turtleback. Do you have enough to buy lunch for the whole group?  Even a round of drinks once a month would be a way of spreading the wealth.

Slightly off topic but not worth opening a new one.

We have a soccer sweep every week with the guy getting the correct score winning 40 bucks.

The balance which is also 40 bucks goes towards the free beer day which we have every six weeks.

It works like the squares you guys have in America,3 bucks per square.

Our version is based off your handicap and 36 as a base. I'm a 12, so you subtract that from 36 to get 24. I need 24 points to be even. The points are 4 for a bird, 2 for par and one for bogey. We do not subtract 1 for a double though many do. We have too many 20+ handicappers for it to be fair.

So if I got 26 points in the above scoring I would be +2. if you were paying $10 per point it would be 20 bucks. We have found it picks up pace of play, and allows the higher handicappers a chance to win on their own ball vs being part of a winning team. Most time we play 3 or 4 man teams and the D players often feel they don't contribute enough. It is a format that some feel favors the higher number, unless you deduct for the double bogey, but it keeps everybody involved. we will play team quota if we have a number of players that don't let you make 3 or 4 man teams.

But buying drinks sounds good too.......
