I was going to post a poll, but there are such a variety of shots I decided against it. My question is simple...what is your favorite shot to hit out on the golf course? Is it a drive? Or something around the green? The Mickelson flop-shot perhaps?

My favorite is the 80-90 yard wedge shot. It is slightly less than a full SW for me, but I feel very confident over it and love watching the ball hit once and stop.

While I'm on the course, before every shot I say to myself that I love that type of shot, but when I have the wedge in my hand I don't feel like I'm fooling myself.

Thought this would be a good way to get some people thinking about their game...

Fairways and Greens.

140-150 yard 8 iron from the middle of the fairway of course. I don't get to play the shot as much as I would like.

I used to hit an 8-iron over 150, but I quit trying to kill the ball every time. So now I just hit it 140-150. I love the shot, and I can usually dial in pretty good from this distance if I ever get myself in position off the tee.

And although I'm not great at it, I love to hit wedges from 40-50 yards. I think they require so much touch, and I enjoy that challenge.

My favorite shot to hit is a knockdown/wind-cheater. It's most effective with irons, but I can pull it off pretty well with the driver, too.

For the irons, I take one more club than I need based on the yardage. Then I put the ball back in my stance, take a three-quarter backswing and hold onto the follow-through at about shoulder height. This lets you trap the ball at impact, sending it off lower and less spin, so wind affects the ball flight less. The key to the shot is keeping your tempo the same as on a full shot and not getting quick (or you'll hit some nasty pulls), and keeping your lower body quiet.

With the driver, I tee it a little lower, move the ball to the center of my stance, and try to swing about 75%. Your drive will fly lower and you'll lose carry distance, but the ball will hit hot and run plenty. A great play into the wind.

I love the way these shots take off on a flat trajectory, and the hissing sound as they sizzle into the wind. When my swing gets askew, these are the iron shots I fall back on.

I love the long ball

Love that story about Tiger playing with Sergio.Sergio RIPS THE BOOTS outta one off the tee and picks his tee up confidently.Tiger gives his best reply and wafts one a clear 30 yards by sergio - ON THE FLY !!!!!!
On walking to their balls Tiger pipes up "Hey Sergio,i hear there building a huge new K-Mart superstore in town" - "Where" Sergio replies....

"Between my drive and yours" Says the Tigger with a smile and a wink.

LOVE IT !

My favorite is the 80-90 yard wedge shot. It is slightly less than a full SW for me, but I feel very confident over it and love watching the ball hit once and stop.

My first inclination was to say the 25-foot putt that drops. It doesn't happen rarely enough, and it's gotta be just the right touch of speed and line.

But that's just cuz I didn't want to give the same answer as you... My favorite is the 100-yard shot. It's the third position (say 10:30 or 3/4) wedge for me in the "Pelz school of wedge play." I'm so confident from 100 yards that my circle is three feet. Quite literally I'm trying to hole it nearly every time I get up there. A horrible, horrible, horrible shot for me from 100 yards is anything from 20 to 25 feet. But hey, then I just get a chance to hole the putt for my other favorite shot.

Chipping out of light rough: 2/3 carry, 1/3 roll. Ball back in stance a little with my 60 degree lob wedge. I love how the ball skips and checks up - watching the ball spinning in flight - everything about that shot I just love it.

About 200 out I like to use my 4 iron and put a little bit of a draw on it. The main course I play at really plays a draw well.

My favorite shot is really any one that requires a lot of imagination. Like 185 yards out, in the right rough, with a tree a half-foot in front of you forcing you to hit that big punch cut shot (a la Sergio at the PGA) to hit the green. Pulling off a shot like that, one that has the potential to seriously hurt you if you fail, is an awesome thrill.

On a side note, my least favorite shot is the one that puts me in that position.

Well, because of my handicap right now I love any shot that flies strait... but my favorite has to be anything from 150 in that hops and stops on the green.

There is nothing that gives me more satisfaction than fixing a ball mark and marking my ball while the rest of the foursome fusses with chips around the greens.

I agree with Paul21. 160-180 yd par 3, wind blowing from right to left, hit a little cut up into the wind so that the ball just dies and drops straight down to the green. I used to be pretty deadly with that shot, but I haven't gotten it back since I started playing again.

The 75 yard shot. If I can't get home in two on a par five, I always try to lay up to 75 yards. Thats a full shot with the 64*.

One of my favorites is the drive that got away from you but magically bounces off the trees into the fairway.

Other than that, I like to play in the bunker every now and then - opening your stance and clubhead then picking it nice and clean.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
