5/27/16:

Played 9 holes today. Hit some really nice iron shots... Inside 100 was slightly better than it has been... Still needs work... Hoping I can get a little work in on it tomorrow and Sunday.

40 minutes at the range. Entirely feel based day, with a ball. Never hit the ball with my 7-iron past 100yds. Focused on all the elements I've been working on, but no slow motion. Just athletic movements at slow speed. Tried to stay as alert as possible to the club shallowing (not a full backswing, but I would get that little "falling behind" feel as I started down).  Worked on timing of the body, rather than the mechanical positions I've done for the past few weeks. It's starting to feel better, and I was making decent contact.

Weekend will be slow motion mirror work again. Video on Tuesday, I hope.

More of these. Starting to work on my hip shift versus rotation timing a little bit at full speed as well.

Going to use the Titleist driver for today's match up. It's giving me the high ball and I think the course needs higher trajectories. It's a little bit damp too.

Spent about 30 minutes at the short-game practice area at the course, practicing chipping.

Went to range today and simulated round at home course. Trying to incorporate feelings of Driver drill to stop slices. Hitting each club I would use hole by hole. This, as it turns out, is a much more realistic session and it IS the game I'm currently taking from the range to the course.

Several rain showers the past 18 hours, ground saturated in low spots.

Practiced short putts indoors for 15 minutes.

Went to the range after work, and I'm glad that I did.  All of the things that have been "feeling" good hitting into the net off of the mat were just too inconsistent.  I was able to hit "up" on a few drives and besides my long irons and woods , I was pretty happy with it.  One day I will learn the difference between a smooth full swing that feels easy and trying to kill the ball.

What did work was putting my feet almost together and closing my stance for chipping and putting , I don't know why but it did.

Practiced chipping with a 60 deg wedge in the backyard.  Hoping to get out later today and play 18.

Too much spin, the balls stopped dead in their tracks even on dry hard fairways. Shot pretty bad, but we only lost the match up by one stroke. My short game and putting were the main culprits, and yes I sound like the typical dweeb who thinks his short game is terrible with a great long game, but really! :-P. I overshot a few of my chips and 3 putted 13 holes (including off the fringe). Greens were running too slow and I just didn't want to get used to putting that fast. Averaged 2.7 putts per hole. :loco:

The good news is the latest changes to my swing added about 1 club on average. Basically, I'm now making a full turn with my hips and shoulders, and relaxing my grip on the club like I'm holding a baby dove (not really, but that's how it feels). I sliced my driver three times gripping too tight but was able to recover with FW and hybrid pretty nicely for near greens over trees from 200 to 240 yards away. Just those three shots made that horrible round seem somewhat satisfying. Of course I had to hook the same hybrid 210 yards over tall trees into the next fairway on a long par 3 pin high long 8 yards and 60 yards to the right. Had a clear shot to the green with a 20 foot by 20 foot window, but rushed my shot and took it back farther than I wanted over hitting the green back for a 2 putt 5. The thirteen 3 putts are desperately telling me to practice putting and chipping. My approaches still need a ton of work, but I think I'll pick some low hanging fruit for now.

Doing more back swing drills and going to practice my putting and chipping today.

30 minutes at range. A4-A6 positions static. Then once slow motion. Then each swing bigger until half speed. Then hit ball.  Start over with static positions. Repeat.

Hit last few balls full speed. Form broke down.  Argh.

Played 18 today with the blitz.  Was able to make 16 stableford points witch was +4 for me.

I felt like I was playing bad but my putter was able to save me a few times. I didn't get pissy and was able to really see that I need to practice my long game as well as short game a lot more.  Not just hitting into the net like I've been doing but really bowing where I consistently go and playing to it.

I couldn't hit a wood or a hybrid today just low worm burners that just go me closer to the hole.  Had some good recovery shots.  Not a bad day just not a great day.

This month, I have had several sessions working "inside 20 yards" with mainly two clubs:  54* for short pitches and 8i for chips. I had a good day close-in last time I played, but was a little shaky (distance control) from 30-80 yards.

Today I went to the Pelz side, and worked on calibrating my wedges for partial swings with KickX golf ball. I charted quarter and half swings for my four wedges: P, G, S and L. The PW from my X20 Tours goes a bit farther, as it seems to have a hotter face than the CG14s.

I next need to do 3/4 and full for the wedges. I suspect there may be a noticeable distance gap between 3/4 and full, as I use an iron swing for full wedges rather than the tempo pitch swing.

(I last did this two years ago with a different ball and a more physical partial swing).

Worked on putting at practice green for a half hour.

Early lag putts went fairly well. Then, switched to 5-, 10- and 15-footers which were terrible! On 10 feet or less, I kept running it a half inch wide left, or leaving it pin-high right. I checked head position, my grip, my takeaway, making sure I held follow-through position... couldn't find what the problem was.

I finally connected on three 3-footers and called it quits for the day.

15 minutes mirror work and slow motion. Feeling the club lie down behind me. Elbow close in- keeping the club from getting near/past parallel. Makes it easier to let club shallow. Check A5, A6 positions against the flaws my instructor listed.

    • Didn’t get back to a decent routine in November and December as planned.  I really need to get up earlier and get to the 7 am CrossFit class… but I’m too tired. Right now getting in 3 times a week. Going to get some swing speed exercises in too.  January-April should be Monday - Friday, load up on supplements too.

But if it cracks 2 years in, you’re screwed on the warranty. the Cobra Dark Speed driver gets rave reviews.  Haven’t heard of breakage issues.  Taylormade now came out with the Qi35 heads.  Absolutely stunning but it’s a carbon fiber sole as well as the face and crown.  I guess we’ll see.
    • Day 71 - 2024-12-10 I spent three minutes trying to figure out when someone started calling me Yoda, even though he remains the only person to call me Yoda… then in a hotel room, I spent ten minutes while watching the 2019 Masters on YouTube (the TV doesn't have Golf Channel) working on my wrist conditions.
