This is very cool if it works.

New York City-based company Waverly Labs says they will soon release the Pilot, a pair of in-ear translators designed to let people who speak different languages understand each other in real-time.

Hopefully it isn't too late to make it yellow instead of red.

Seriously awesome invention though.

In the recent movie, Kill Zone 2, where a mix of Catonese, Mandarin, Thai and English were causally mixed, two lead characters needed a smartphone app which did on the fly translation to communicate. One guy would speak into the smartphone and the app would instantly translate and speak the translation. There are apps like these IRL. The earpiece is a miniaturization and that's a technical feat, but the really hard part, the software to do the translation, has been slowly getting better for a long time.

On the fly translation for languages like Chinese have a long way to go though. Google Translate does a poor job with any sentence with just an iota of complexity.

That would be cool. However, I've been in meetings with an interpreter translating in real time. After about 10 minutes you get a headache because you are listening to two things at the same time. In my case, it was German and English.

I am in the market for this like folks wait for latest iphones - except this will be infinitely more useful to me if it is half as good as they say it is.
