Someone here posted a jury rigged a laser on the putter head as an aiming aide. Anyone know of a way to buy something on the cheap to measure putterhead speed, without buying a SAM Putt Lab device? I guess you could write a smartphone app that takes a video of the stroke and figures it out from the video.

You could count frames yourself. The Tomi was a lot cheaper but I don't know how suspect the data from that was - it was made by the same guy who made the SAM but costs quite a bit less… and is less accurate, but is it good enough? I don't know.

Thanks. I'll try counting frames.

Does the iPing putting app do that?

it does add a fair but of weight to your shaft, so maybe not ideal even if it does measure acceleration. And I don't remember if it does.

Seriously? Unless you're going to give a presentation on what the club head does during the putting stroke you're thinking too much. But if you want to write a smartphone app and sell it.... then profit.

I'm guessing @nevets88 wants to work on his speed with some observable feedback.

Yep. Not an unreasonable request. I basically want a poor man's Sam Putt lab.

I'm picturing a board of some kind with vertical lines drawn on it that you can place between the ball and your feet, then you can record your putt and calculate the distance/frame. Mythbusters B-)

That makes a lot of sense. I might consider writing an app for it. After the two dozen other app ideas I have. :-(

    • Can you elaborate on this?  There's a par-4 hole at the course I've played the most (was my home course for over a decade, now 50 miles away but I still go and play there) whose green is below the fairway and I realized recently it's one of three holes on the course I've never made birdie, despite that I often have a short iron into the green for my second shot.  It isn't even that I haven't made birdie, but I realize I often don't hit the green.  My typical play of the hole is to have a near-GIR and sometimes I get up and down, but not as often as I would if I were trying to 2-putt.
