I see a lot of talk about the "Big 3" which seems to include Spieth, Day, and McIlroy. I even saw an ad for The Open that touted such things.

However, it would seem to be, right now, that there is Day, Spieth, and a rotation at the number 3 spot. Of course I mean this as a hypothetical ranking, not based on OWGR, etc.

At this very moment I would say the "Big 3" are Day, Spieth, and DJ based on number of wins and consistency over the last two seasons. Adam Scott was hot for a while but hasn't had a top ten since his two victories earlier this year. Rory is "struggling" as well without a victory in 2016.

In any event, I think the emergence of this top tier of consistent golfers is very good for the game as a whole. Very fun to watch the heavyweights cluster at the top of the leaderboard consistently.

I agree with @Chilli Dipper. This new "Big 3" talk is annoying. These guys are their own golfers. I am sure all of them will win more majors, though I have my doubts about Rory right now. He needs to take an Aimpoint lesson and get fitted for an Edel putter ;)

The fact is it's much harder today to win than it was 10 years ago, and much more than it was 30-40 years ago. It was much easier for 3 golfers to stand a top the world at the same time and claim so many wins and major wins.

Well, that is sort of my point. It's all silly because it only matters who is performing in that particular tournament.

In a way this makes what these guys are doing pretty phenomenal. To rise up in such a talented, deep field and perform with such consistency is amazing. Gives even more credence to what Tiger did as well.

They all have the potential to get hot, just as DJ has these past few weeks.  A guy wins a tournament, his confidence goes up and he plays better until he hits a ball in the water twice during a Major.

Rory might be Big 3 in terms of talent but he's not there in terms of the quality of his play as of late.  I'm not sure I'd keep Spieth in the discussion of Top 3 at this point either.

There's a lot of good players on the Tour, anyone can win on any given Sunday.

It's DJ, Day, Spieth/Rory in that order right now as far as who's the best in the world. After that there's a bit of a drop off. The media can go with Big 4 if they want...that's a media thing. But it's clear to me there's 4 guys who are at the top and there's everyone else.

i remember earlier this year some thought Rickie should be in the same sentence as the big boys. I kinda chuckle about that now. Kid's gotta a long way to go and needs to start taking golf more seriously if he wants that to happen.

I believe the media is just following the approach of the Big 10.

There are 14 schools, not all of which are big at the same time.  Likewise, the PGA can have 7 players in the Big 3... not all of which may be big at any given time.
