Welcome to the "5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge for September, 2016! The rules are the same as always:

  • Make a somewhat detailed post describing your practice every day during the month.
  • No back-dating or pre-dating posts or practice sessions.
  • On the last day of the month, if you completed the challenge, post about it, preferably in red text or something so I can notice it and give you the award.
  • Detail what you did for at least five minutes of practice (indoors or out, with or without golf balls, etc.).

Enjoy and practice hard!

I am going to give this a shot.  I can find 5 minutes a day to work on some things but my issue will be if I can remember to come here and post it.  I might steal some other peoples ideas for things to work on throughout the month.

This morning was some mirror work.  I used the video from Eric on the spine angle as my weight and spine were too far forward at the top of my swing.  Really concentrating on not moving the head back and forth while keeping the spine in the correct spot.  Its a lot harder than it looks on TV

I plan to do this too. I will be focusing on the stuff that is on the first few pages of my My Swing thread. I will not work on ANYTHING ELSE until I am tilted forward (for lack of a better term) and my eyes are pointing at the ball. If I start to deviate and work on other things, someone please smack me upside the head.

Continued work on the slower backswing with a slightly faster through swing. It is mostly SK1 and SK2 work, but has some indirect SK3 work. I don't "dive" so much for the ball. I'm starting to feel like Fred Couples or Ernie Els with this easy swing.

9/1/2016:

Work closed early today and I managed to get some full swing practice in before the rain hit. No real focus, other than easy swings. Was just having fun hitting balls and waiting for the weather to turn bad enough to force me inside.

10 minutes of putting practice inside tonight. Short, straight putts, making sure I hit my line every time.

Went out and practices on the course a few holes.  Alignment felt a lil off.  Worked on aim and irons off the tee. Also worked on chipping.  Only played 4 soggy holes, most tee shots were plugged or next to where they pitched.

I played 18 holes. I noticed my pelvis getting a bit… what I'll call "sturdy" instead of "slumpy." That helped quite a bit.

9/2 - Playing Gateway International this morning.  I will count all the times I play as those are technically still practice for me.  I will have my concentration on the practice from yesterday (spine tilt control) and keeping my hands down at address as I have a really bad habit of standing too far back and reaching to the ball at address

I'm in.  I intended to reply to this yesterday (the 1st) and to do my 5 mins, but yesterday was my mother-in-law's birthday, and my day was somewhat taken up!  So, notwithstanding day one, I shall update this daily with my practice.

Dang, missed yesterday (didn't even practice yesterday), but I want to get in the habit of regularly posting my practice.  I keep saying that...

9/2/16:

* Driving range, out doors, College of Desert.

* Worked on club from A1 to A3, so it's pointing "inside" the ball -- I've slipped away from this a bit lately.  Took partial backswing, stopped, checked where club butt is pointing, repeat twice before taking a full back-swing and shot.

Then, separately, although maybe I should have combined them:

* Working on having my hands forward at A6 -- was previously behind my body from CV, in my practice I'm exaggerating, trying to get it to between my legs or so, without causing my shoulder angle to stray too far.

While waiting for the grill to warm up and before the last batch of rain from hurricane Hermine came through, I worked on swinging with left shoulder going down. I started by putting a club across my shoulders, taking my stance, and turning to the right so that the butt end of the grip was pointing to where the ball would be. I am trying to exaggerate this. Then I did some slow swings focusing on lowering the left shoulder.

Played 18 holes. I forget where I put my GAME GOLF but I'll probably post the round tomorrow night. Or Sunday night.

Let me elaborate. I worked on my pitching motion with a slower backswing and slightly faster through swing... Alina and I put the mop bucket at 20 yards from me with limited flight balls and the first to put three in the bucket won. (Alternating shots)... Needless to say Alina beat me 3-2 again... With her hockey slap shot thing.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
