Which Ball Do You Use In The Winter?

It is often said that one should use a lower compression ball in the colder months. Do you use a ball different from the one you use in the warmer months. If so, what ball do you prefer in cold times?

In the cold weather in MN I do use different balls in cooler fall and winter. I use either Pinnacle gold or Dunlop LoCo balls. Warm weather I use Titlest ProV1's or Callaway Hx Tours. I find that I don't lose quite as much distance in the cold by using the Pinnacle and Dunlop balls... plus they are cheaper

During practice rounds I allways use top flites, pinnacles, old balls etc...
During tournaments I always use pro v1's. I work the ball better with these, so I don't really care about losing or getting more distance.
Plus, I do this all year long. I don't care if it is winter, summer, spring nor Autumm

Each winter, I seem to play a different ball in the winter. What ever Golf Galaxy has on special (Two for one last year on the Maxfli's). This year I'm going with Titleist DT Solo's, they are softer than a lot of other cheap balls, and, they ARE Titleists!!

After losing 3 balls in the fairway on my last round (lots of leaves and no winter mowing as yet) I bought some high definition yellow balls in Pinnacle Gold (very soft). Now I have soft and high visibility.

In a tournament round I'll hit a Pro V1x. Any other round, I'll hit anything I can get my hands on, Pinnacle, Top Rock, Slazenger, Precept, I don't care. As long as I can make it go really, really far.

In the winter, I'll prefer lower compression balls since they don't feel like a complete rock, but it's not a huge issue to me. Once I finally do get my hands on a low compression ball, I'll probably not carry that lake because of lost distance, anyway.

The same. I go back and forth -- ProV vs. ProV1x.

I just dig the ProV1 plain, pure and simple.

Which dome are you frequenting? I go to Breamar, but i live in the north metro so it's a bit of a hike.

I live south of the cities so I go to the one in Rochester... about 45 miles for me one way. Really sux with gas going for the price of gold.

good topic for people who live in a climate cold enough to affect play. In the past I've used dunlop locos (a great ball), pinnacle gold, or NXT's. Now i use the e5 and e6's which i think might be the longest i've played.. cold or not

Well, I live in a state considered part of the old south and whenever thought of in terms of weather, it's usually in terms of hot or steamy. However, in late December and through parts of February, the temp, here, can get down into the 20s and 30s ( now, I think that's colder than a witch's tit, although I'm sure my bretheren in the northern states are laughing their behind's off at the idea [ indeed, I attended graduate school in New York city and I recall well the wind whipping around the granite canyons cold enough to emasculate just about anyone ] ). I've noticed that there seems to be a difference, even in Mississippi, between the same golf ball hit on a damp, 40 degree afternoon and one hit on a sunny, dry 85 degree afternoon.

So, I think even Mississippi or other southern states get cold enough for most of the winter to warrant considering a different ball, perhaps one with a somewhat lower compression, in order not to lose too much distance. At least, that's my theory on this along with a little experience. And as it has been getting colder, here, I've been thinking about which ball might give me at least similar performance to my summer play when I get up the nerve to go play in the cold and damp winter weather. This summer I used the Callaway HX Hot. When I played a new sleeve about a week and a half ago, I noticed that I was playing almost one club longer than I might play in warmer weather. By way of explanation, this recent experience prompted my query in this thread.

The HX Hot will definatly go further as it is a distance ball. Great ball though, the only thing is though that it does not spin too much. Though I do like them.

I played in TN the day after Thanksgiving and I had the same problem. The leaves had just started to fall and I ended up losing 3 or 4 balls in the fairway. Some of the tee boxes were covered with leaves. We had to actually move them out of the way to tee up.

This is my first winter playing regularly. It's not cold here at all. We have been in the upper 70's for the past week. Next month it will get down in the 40's and 50's so I will definately go with a softer ball.
