OK, so i pulled the trigger and snagged a NOS 690mb 2iron...

While i've wanted to buy a 2 iron for a while, i couldnt find a 2 iron to match my 735cm's and when i did see one on ebay the buyer wanted like 190$ for it lol....

But my reason for buying it, is i've been having issues with my driver, and figure i hit my irons good enough, especially my 3 iron, that i can play the 2 iron, and ditch the driver for a bit, and keep my 3 wood in the bag... or ditch the 3 wood...   for a bit....

plus my thoughts are keeping the ball in play.... vs chasing the ball all over the course..

is this good thinking or WTF thinking lol......

If you are having issues hitting a huge forgiving driver, I dont know that a 2 iron is the answer.

I hit the Titleist TMB 2 iron at demo day last year. Its amazing to me that people actually carried those. Its so hard to hit consistently.

I'm inclined to agree with this, but I've had times where I felt really good, given my handicap, with my 3i – don't have one anymore, but when I did – and not so great with the driver or FW.  I could imagine wanting to take a break from the driver on the course – while trying to dial it in on the range – and wanting a 2i to get it out far enough to just play from the front or mid tees with that as the longest club.

And while I like the long irons and will never be one to bad mouth them, I do play a 2h as a replacement, now without a 3i, for the 3i and 5w.  That's a great club for me and definitely worth considering as a temporary driver replacement.  Get a 17˚ or 18˚ hybrid and it will give you 5w distance off the tee but for me more often tracks with how I'm hitting my irons, not how I'm hitting driver/3w.

I waited a little longer but finally settled for the 18* hybrid for its versatility. I still will pull out the 3 iron on a shortish hole and there is not too many shots quite like striping the long iron down the fairway. I also play the 735s and while a 2 iron is tempting, its just not worth giving up my Adams Idea Pro Gold which I can hit off the tee, from the rough, or even a fairway bunker.

I currently carry both a 1i and a 2i (+ a driver, and a 5w). Fixing to add a 7w and dump one of them.

I have definitely used my 2i to tee off when having slice issues with the driver or instead of a 3w from the fairway...I can't hit a 3w to save my life.

I mainly use these clubs to get out of trouble with overhanging limbs when I need to punch out low and back into the fairway. I'll probably keep the 1i for this purpose and put the 2i into the office bag now.

well i have tried some hybrids a couple years ago, but it was like at first i could hit them well, but when i started to practice more with my long irons..  i would end up with a big slice from my hybrids, so i ended up trading them in..

off the Tee i am pretty solid with my 3 wood.... obviously more consistent than my driver...  and with the course i normally play with my dad, its just over 6000 yards from the tee's we play... and 6500 from the tips..  so it's not like it's a huge stretch to drop the driver.... and with hitting my 3iron i am usually between 180 to 200 yards....

But i will give a update tomorrow on how it goes, with using my 3 iron off the tee on some of the holes....

I have a 2i that I dont keep in my bag, but I sometimes practice with it. Usually off very thin lies. I hit it pretty well most of the time. The amount of feed back it gives me is quite educational. It's also a mental thing of sorts for me. I figure if I can hit the 2i well, I can hit my other clubs even better.

Ok, so this is what happened today..... so i used my driver on the first hole and block one to the right on the other fairway lol... next hole, is a short par4, i use my 3 wood and block one to the right again lol...  then i am like F-it.... i re-tee a ball grab my 3iron and smoke one down the fairway... and proceed to play my 3 iron off the tee till the last hole...  while i was losing distance on my tee shots.... i was piping everything right down the middle of the fairway.... so accuracy was a big plus..    And i am pretty sure it helped with my other irons too, since i was basically taking the same swing all day long...

now on the last hole which is a long par 5, i decided to pull out driver and try something i read on TST..   and low n behold i hit the ball good with a bit of a draw...   so it will be something i am going to work on when i go to the driving range this weekend....

Overall i felt like i played good...  my putting sucked the big D today lol...  several 3 putts, and a 4 putt ... doesnt help when you shoot a 50 while only playing 9 holes....

DaveLY, along this line, I have questions no one else has asked:

  1. Did you get a fitting for this driver?
  2. Have you taken a lesson to diagnose root cause(s) of driver/slice problem? You might make more progress on the driving range this weekend if you knew what to work on.

If you can hit a 3I well, a 2I is not that much of a leap.

OTOH, try teeing up your driver low and act like you are hitting a 3W.. You might find you will hit it lower but straighter. Of course teeing low usually comes with some distance  loss.

Beyond that seeing a good pro is always a good idea..

BTW, I disagree that a big headed driver is easier to hit/control than a 2I because it has a, well, a big head. If so Phil Mickelson would have won 25 majors.

Knowing when to hit driver or not is why Phil blew majors. Not hitting driver because you think you can control a 2 iron is insane. Lowest score wins says the closer to the hole the better, and no offense to the OP, but if low single digit handicaps are not consistent enough to hit a 2 iron why would you risk it. I mean just hit a PW off the tee if we're worried about control over distance.

@David L Yskes go get fit for a driver, it makes a world of difference. then go see a pro and see how they can help. 2 iron is only going to prolong issues and make golf not fun.

I have to agree with getting to the root problem of not being able to hit the driver and just reaching for a long iron. The long iron off the tee has its purpose. Its to put you in a position to attack the green, especially when you need a premium on accuracy or you need to hit a particular distance. It shouldn't be a substitute because you can't hit a driver.

With that said, many ams struggle with the woods because the extra length of the shaft amplifies swing flaws. Some struggle because the swing is longer and the impulse to return the club to the ball takes over with a quick move that starts in the shoulders accentuating an over the top move which results in pulls and/or slices . Whatever it is, it needs to be addressed. In my case, it usually results from what I think is an impatient tempo. When I get a little anxious, I get the quick move going not allowing myself to load up properly and then deliver the club appropriately to the ball. I consistently work on tempo with the longer clubs because I need to stay connected and not let the swing get away from me. My best days with my tee shots come from a good tempo and a solid move.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
