Oh, hit driver all day! I do. Absolutely. Accuracy wise driver may be my worst club but as long is trouble is at least 245-255 out, I will hit it till my arms fall off. Not the point of my post.

I just don't agree that a driver is easier to put in the play compared to a 2-iron especially if he hits 3I and puts it in play all day. Maybe that's not what you are saying but that's how I am reading into your post. The 5-8 degrees of extra loft counts for something.

Now, THAT would be insane.. lol..

I have to agree with getting to the root problem of not being able to hit the driver and just reaching for a long iron. The long iron off the tee has its purpose. Its to put you in a position to attack the green, especially when you need a premium on accuracy or you need to hit a particular distance. It shouldn't be a substitute because you can't hit a driver.

Yupp, a premium on accuracy is an individual thing though. To each their own. For some, it might be EVERYTIME they stand on a tee.

Long term, no arguing that we all must find a way to put driver in play as the loss of distance is too much of a cost to give up for good. You don't have to convince ME. You would have to pry my driver out of my dead hands.

I have always had a 1 or 2 iron.  A 2 iron off the tee has generally been a good shot for me, due to the fact that I tend to sweep the ball.

Also, the 2 iron is a good option for hitting low cuts and hooks out of the trees

I carry a 2 iron.  Don't use it much.  But, I will say that there is nothing in golf, NOTHING, sweeter than hitting a clean shot with a 2 iron.  Just my opinion, of course.  :-D

Because it only happens once a year?

Well, that's another issue.  I'm talking about the sweet feel the the added flex of hitting a clean long iron.  However few times it's happened, I remember it clearly.

I don't play hybrids so I am a big fan of the long irons.  Two of my sets have 2 irons in them and I love hitting them on par 4's and 5's.  Two weeks ago I finally got to hit a 1 iron.  It was awesome.  I looked around but they are hard to find.

Would I replace my driver with a 2 iron?  No, but I will keep it in my bag when playing one of those sets.

Play the 2 iron and work on your driver... then you have more shots in your bag.

ok guys.... i just got back from the driving range and mainly used my Driver, and the 2 iron..... now where i am in michigan it's windy.... which was a plus cuz i was able to see how the 2 iron did with swirling winds....

So the plus.... i think i did figure some stuff out with my driver..  adjusted ball position, opened my left foot just a bit, and worked on a nice easy swing.... so that is a bonus....

with the 2 iron,, the good!!  i could tell when i hit the ball really good, a bit on the toe or heel, or just plain awful....    hitting this iron off the tee is about the only thing i'd do right now... off the tee i was getting out to about 200 yards ( sometimes farther depending on which way the wind was blowing ),  another thing is when i did hit the ball really good OMG.... it was like butter!!!!  and all i would hear is a nice little click from the blade hitting the ball....

The bad with the 2 iron.... when i hit a bad shot... wow was it awful... lol not going to lie it did happen.. and the ball would go maybe 150 yards.... i will say the range balls today that i ended up with was awful.. alot of them i would hit good and the ball would get out to 150+ and just knuckle and drop ... so some of the times judging a good hit vs a so so hit was a bit tough...

But i can see myself taking out my 3 wood and using my 2 iron as a replacement...  which i will do this week on my weekly golf outing with my dad....  and see how it goes....

Not sure what that means.  But, if it means feeling like a badass, then yes, that's pretty much it.

I did, for a long time. I don't anymore as I realised that the 2-hybrid I carry should be illegal as it's so easy to hit. Still have the 2-iron and practice with it, but don't generally carry it anymore.

Definitely agree with the golfing porn sensation of hitting a flush, straight long iron.

  • 3 weeks later...

Ok, so i've played 2 rounds while bagging the 2 iron.....

i will say, what i've noticed with the 2 iron, is a nice and easy swing is the way to go...any time i've tried to get a little bit more into the ball i just dont hit the ball good, i end up catching it on the toe a bit...

I'm hitting the ball out to about 210 yards... i say about cuz my dad hits his driver about 225,, and i am either even or 10 yards or so behind him.... the nice thing is i am hitting more fairways , which in turn has made my 2nd shot a lot better, cuz i am not playing in the tree's or way off course..

Plus it has made playing golf a lot funner cuz i am scoring better and keeping the ball in play vs chasing the ball all over..  i know it's not a solution to my driver woes, but it's nice to play better

now if i could get my putting in order i'd be happy lol

Never have had a 2i, wish I would have tried one.  For a time, about 10 yrs ago, I didn't have any fairway woods so I had a 1i to breach the gap between a driver and 3i.  Loved that 1i, hit it a mile when I caught it, which wasn't as frequent as I would have liked.  Replaced it w an Orlimar Tri-Metal 4W and never looked back.

I'd recommend figuring out the hybrids and going that route, gonna help you in the long run.

Well,,,, right now i am in the process of putting together a new set of irons... i got matching 690mb's in 3 thru 6 iron.... and would like to find a 690mb 7 iron too..... but i might just get some new MB's in 7 to PW

while i'm not opposed to hybrids, i love hitting irons..  i do plan on getting some lessons in the spring time, to address my driver issues..   since right now golfing season is coming to a end ( weather wise )  i might have 1 or 2 more weeks of decent golfing weather..

I have a 2i that I dont keep in my bag, but I sometimes practice with it. Usually off very thin lies. I hit it pretty well most of the time. The amount of feed back it gives me is quite educational. It's also a mental thing of sorts for me. I figure if I can hit the 2i well, I can hit my other clubs even better.

I've thought the same thing about the 3 iron. Unfortunately I can't hit it that great. Don't these caveman clubs need a ton of head speed to work?

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

I have heard that they do need a lot of swing speed too. I am not a fast swinger of any clubs. However, I do know I need to hit my 2i on it's sweet spot, with a ball first impact.

Knowing when to hit driver or not is why Phil blew majors. Not hitting driver because you think you can control a 2 iron is insane. Lowest score wins says the closer to the hole the better, and no offense to the OP, but if low single digit handicaps are not consistent enough to hit a 2 iron why would you risk it. I mean just hit a PW off the tee if we're worried about control over distance.

@David L Yskes go get fit for a driver, it makes a world of difference. then go see a pro and see how they can help. 2 iron is only going to prolong issues and make golf not fun.

I used a 2 iron off the tee exclusively for a while and the one huge benefit to it was that horrid mishits were still in play. A similar mishit with a wood will still carry far enough to either be ob or in some really deep stuff.

Imo it's actually better that the mishits aren't as forgiving distance wise.

Here is a nice chart for the fantasy world in which we all swing like perfect robots. Note how far down 2 iron is on the list after driver.

    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.

    • Cool here's my tweak, "If a player’s ball lies in the general area and there is interference from exposed tree roots or exposed rocks that are in the fairway or 1 club length from the fairway the tree roots and exposed rocks are treated as ground under repair. The player may take free relief under Rule 16.1b.[But relief is not allowed if the tree roots only interfere with the player’s stance.]
    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
    • Have you looked at Model Local Rule F-9 Relief from Tree Roots in or Close to Fairway?  You could extend this to cover exposed rocks.  The rule is recommended to be used only for areas relatively near the fairway, a player who hits a shot 20 yards in the woods doesn't really deserve relief.   Players can always take Unplayable Ball relief, they're not required to play it from a rock or a root.  Of course, they hate to take the penalty stroke too.
