Is there a good way to determine what shaft weight I should be using. I recently hit a Taylormade M2 driver with the Aldila Rogue Silver 70 shaft. There were a few sprays left and right, but the shots I hit true were really nice. I have a 100mph swing speed and consider myself pretty athletic/strong. I try to keep my tempo at a 3:1 ratio. Would the 70g shaft be to heavy? It didn't feel too heavy in my hands and I'm coming from hitting 50-60g regular shaft for my driver. I'm moving up to a stiff shat and really interested on the specs I should be looking at for my shaft.

I am no expert but the way I select my shaft weight is to close my eyes and swing one shaft weight and then another and simply decide which one felt more natural for my swing. For me it works.

Once I choose shaft weight then I decide on flex.

There's no way we'll be able to tell you; this is something you dial in by feel and by distance. A heavier shaft, all other things being equal, will slow your tempo a touch as the club will feel heavier, but it will also increase total mass of the club. Distance-wise, the ideal weight will create a local maximum where there's both sufficient mass and swing speed to give you the most kinetic energy behind the ball. Too heavy and swing speed will fall off more than the shaft's mass can make up; too light and the increase in swing speed doesn't make up for the mass loss.

Of more importance IMO is that a heavier shaft brings the balance point (aka swingweight) of the club higher on the shaft, making the club feel more balanced in your hands. At just the right point, the club will feel effortless. Too light and the clubhead is hard to control through your swing; too heavy and it's hard to feel where the clubhead is. Either way you'll have ball-striking problems with a shaft that doesn't feel balanced to you.

I've always heard… swing the lightest shaft you can control. Go too light, and the quality of contact will really suffer.

Old thread but pretty much a topic I need help with.... around shaft weigh

current using TM M1 with a KURO KAGE Mitz Rayon stiff 50g shaft

My Driver swing speed around 110mph

Now after going to a local Club demo day for "Tour Edge" and I was finding I had really good control of the head of a Tour edge driver with a stiff shaft 65g ...hitting 5 shots all in the center of the face

Now I generally hit a fade to straight ... but every so often have the odd horror slice or push-pull ...

But when you look at my driver club face it all over the shop but mostly on the low side...

So thinking heavier shaft may well be a smart move can secure a second-hand KuroKage silver Tini Stiff 60 (which going from the guide is 67g) from a M2

Or a 2014 New "Paragon Pro X2" 85grams

Both under $100 .... not really wanted to pay be $$$ for a new shaft not sure which one to go for ..

If you swing at 110, I’m surprised you can control a 50g shaft. They feel too light for me and I am around 90mph.

Could be the shaft weight or it could be your swing. Probably both. 50g seems really light for your speed. If you're missing low on the face, you might be teeing the ball too low or your swing is steep. What shafts do you play in your irons?

Your swing speed is about the same as mine. When I did a fitting a couple of years ago, the fitter recommended to switch to heavier iron shafts. When we did the driver, though, he said the heavier shaft helped, but not as much as he would've liked, so I needed to work on my driver swing to see some results. I did eventually change to an 80g shaft.

Hmmmm. This is never even a factor I considered. Could this be said for the overall weight of the club as well I imagine?

The new for me 712 AP1's do feel quite light compared to my 710 AP2's and perhaps that lightness is a bit difficult to control overall.

Driver swing speed 110mph for sure needs at least 60g shaft.

KuroKage silver Tini Stiff 60 is a well-known shaft, mid-stiff and low-launch, which may or may not suit you, try out first before buying.

2014 New "Paragon Pro X2" 85grams never heard of it, sounds more risky to try a lesser-known model with such a large weight jump.

Iron shaft weight for sure is important too.  Too light too whippy.  Too heavy too tiring.

Right thanks for the replies guys .. my irons are Cleveland TT558 with a Cleveland 85 traction steel shafts which seem to work very well for me.

And yes I do find it hard to control my light M1 driver so sounds like a heavier shaft will certainly give me better feel ... looking at my most recent Flightscope my average swing speed was 112.5mph

Thinking I might need to even go to extra-stiff flex along with 65-80gm weight

Guess it comes down to price .. online I can pick up older new shafts that will suit for about quarter what I will pay in store (Downunder NZ not cheap)

Interesting. 85g is pretty light for iron shafts. I'm surprised that light shafts fit you in irons but you need a heavier shaft in your driver.

Could still be your swing. Maybe you should start a swing thread.

Right my Iron swing speed averages high 90's MPH, I did try out some heavier irons at the demo day and didn't really like the extra weight but then I started playing golf with graphite shaft power built irons (I know but they were cheap and I didn't really have a clue)

I did check out your swing thread at the start and we actually have quite similar issues ...aka too steep swing path (standing too close to the ball a big reason) and over back swinging coming from the wrist/elbow break issues.. also getting into a solid bent knee platform rather than standing too tall esp on follow through>>

I know my issues with my swing and when I'm on top of them I can actually score very well... but like many it's just ongoing work to iron out the issues ..

I've played to PAR over 9 recently ..

My short game my biggest issues

After doing some more work at my local GC I'm pretty confident I'll go with a "Mitsubishi Tensei shaft" either a the blue Stiff 67g or the white X-stiff  77g (the latter I can buy second-hand for a third the price)

trying out the new Tensei blue tomorrow

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
