Techniques are usually subjective and personal. Some sheer voodoo.  I find that I tend to spend too much time frozen over a putt and it usually just misses on one side or the other and rolls about two feet past the hole.  Lately I've been experimenting with a method that seems to relieve tension. Standing over a putt, I might make two practice swings,  line up the putt. Then I turn my head towards the target, ascribing an imaginary line i wish to take with my nose. I then retrace that line back to the ball and when my nose is directly over the ball, I take the putter back and make the stroke. No time to think about it, no hesitation, just follow the line, make nasal contact (figuratively) and execute. My nose does not extend back beyond the ball however.  I know, sounds ridiculous, but seems to work.  I seem to recall reading something similar years back where the player looked twice to the target, and executed immediately during the second "look" as a trigger move.

Try not taking any practice swings. I don't. I tested this a few years back at a practice green. I found my accuracy and distance control was better without a practice swing. I find it just distracts me. If I do take any to loosen up, it is while others are setting up to putt.

I pick my line and start direction from behind the ball, walk up, line up, settle my feet, look down at my ball, do a small forward press and putt. All I focus on after looking at the ball is the start direction. Try it.

I like to "see" the line. I don't use my nose, but I do like to trace the line with my eyes and "see" the putt travel the line and drop. I have played so infrequently this year that I can't say I have a routine, which is bad, I used to have a very consistent putting routine.

Yep. In practice I make about five in a row from four feet into the bell end of a piece of cut off grey PVC which is just barely larger than a golf ball. It's only four feet owing to the small bath carpet I have.  I may buy one of those commercial putting practice strips with ball return for outside (or walk about four blocks to Reidy Creek executive course and use their putting green).

Luckily, due to my aim point knowledge and understanding of the proper acel/decel profile, I'm still typically the best putter in my group even with the very infrequent play this year.

I have an orange golf ball that I putt to instead of using a hole. The smaller target seems to help me. The idea is to hit the orange ball. I just drop it on the green, walk a few steps away, and drop my practice balls in various places. Then practice my reads.

This works especially well when the practice greens are crowded, and I also use it for chipping practice.

@Patch  Had to do a double take on your post. At first I thought you had said "Orange whip".Now that would definitely require some finesse.

Could be just that your focus on the details of the new method has you in a tighter routine and more tuned in to process and less focused on the outcome?

@natureboy  Probably. Like nearly everything, usually short lived.

Don't get me wrong, potential value in tracing / being conscious of the arc has potential value and it sounds a bit like you're applying a version of 'the quiet eye'

Hmm, never head that before. I can relate to that somewhat. Also, there is "zen" golf whereby you visualize the outcome of a specific action as a dress rehearsal in the mind's "eye".

It only looks like a smaller target. If you miss or barely knick the ball that putt probably wouldn't have gone in a golf hole. It takes about the same amount of precision to putt into a hole as it does to hit a golf ball as a target. As such, I agree that it makes a good substitute when the practice green is crowded.

In the world of putting if it works I would just carry on

I don't think I can "nose " putt like that

I do something similar.  I trace the line with my eyes and set my set along the target line. My rear eye is dominant and as my eyes are tracing the line from my AP to the ball I like to keep my eyes behind and beneath the ball

Then once me eyes trace back to a the line behind the ball then I automatically start my backstroke.  This seems to work well with my odessay #9 putter or when belly wedge .

    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
    • What simple fact? A golf match is not a coin flip — there is a fact for you. I'm trying to help you, and you're throwing out what could easily be called sour grapes. Come with FACTS, not weak analogies. Then you've got nothing. Hopefully they've done a better job of making their case. 😛
