a little follow up, not to beat the subject to death, but just in case anyone else is considering purchase..... Not ideal to be worn as a watch as the screen does not stay lit, and you would be conspicuous checking the time, OTOH the display of time is quite large provided there is enough ambient light as in out of doors. For course selection, I like the way it will take you to the closest golf course after acquisition and then allow you to scroll up or down to other courses in the area often several miles away.  Also I had asked about wall charger. It does not come with one, but I happened to have one from a very old Vivitar camera that seems to work. I was a little hesitant but looking at the output of 5v and 21mah, I don't know what the actual amperage flow is though. but it seems consistent with most on the market used with watches.

Can't recommend the Bushnell Neo XS enough - cheap, very accurate (always within a yard of the on-course markers), charge lasts for two rounds and fully charges in under an hour and best of all, there are no subscription fees. If I lost it, would immediately buy another one.

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

What's in the bag: Callaway X2 Hot Driver, Titleist 915F 3 wood, X2 Hot 3 Hybrid, 3, 5-AW Apex Pro irons, 54*, 58* Cleveland RTX, Odyssey Versa 1 Putter

I'm sorry I didn't see this before when you were contemplating your purchase, James. I have been using my S2 for six months and love it. The score keeping is really easy. It automatically goes to the scorecard on the green (most of the time). It also does a good job of calculating layups, which I use all the time. I wear it at work more often than any of my other watches, including my Movado. Can't say enough good things about the Garmin S2. Good purchase.

@Blackjack Don  Yes,me too and have not even taken it to the course yet!. I like the large numerals in watch display (us older guys need all the help we can get). I have just been fooling around with it and noticed many courses I did not even know existed. It picks up them all, even the tiniest par 3 private courses.  I hope to get out after the 1st of the year. This last week or so, we spent a lot of time in the local casino's.  Next time, I will just drop her off!

OK, took watch out on the course. Pretty accurate. I really like how simple to use. It also turned out to be a real eye opener for me.  I was really off in my estimates of yardage, by at least 40 yards!  This will definitely keep you honest!  I've got lots to do regarding gaining distance! Heck, from the results, I might as well ditch my driver.  As Trump says....."So Sad".

I just purchased the TomTom Golfer 2. Great watch as well with yardages to front-, middle and back of the green, yardages to hazards, lay-up distances and automatic scorecard through shot detection. Loving it so far.

It's not specifically a "golf GPS," but I'm curious to learn more about the new Garmin Fenix 5 multi-sport watch that was just announced. The previous Fenix 3 watch had some basic golf GPS capabilities, but the early literature suggests the new generation has added features found on Garmin's premium golf watches, in addition to everything else it has.

I was already looking into buying a new running/fitness watch, and was leaning toward the Fenix 3 HR (having some Christmas money earmarked for the cause). If the Fenix 5 does what Garmin says it does in regard to golf, that would just be icing on the cake.

In my UnderArmour Links stand bag...

Woods: SasQuatch 17° 4-Wood (stiff graphite shaft)
Hybrid: 4DX Ironwood 20° (stiff graphite shaft)Irons/Wedges: Apex Edge 3-PW, GW, SW (stiff shaft); Carnoustie 60° LWPutter: Rossa AGSI+ Corzina...

as per usual, I often end up answering my own queries. Anyways...full charge <5 hrs via USB. Took it outside to acquire satellites and it automatically set up time, and allowed me to choose language and a few other things. Immediately a small golf course (Reidy Creek) which is a short executive course about 3 blocks away came up on the screen to Start Round.......KEWL...

Reidy creek? I remember that place. All the weird variations on short holes. Only to be played in the winter because the summer is too hot

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

Too Hot? Escondido?  Not really that far inland. Only a few miles from Oceanside. I suppose it's all relative though.

I just remember the San Diego Social Golfer meetup group labeled one of their meetings:

BTW Have you tried out your watch on a longer course yet ?

oh yeah, went to Sycuan (Willow Grove Par 72 70.1/123) 6200 yds. It was accurate as far as I could tell and matched another guys range finder. Only drawback is, only gives you to front and middle and back of the green, not pin placement. But even so, you get readings how far to middle even when on the green, example: says 8 yds to center, from that you can pretty much judge how far pin is.

Got Garmin Approach S2 about a year ago. Very happy with front middle back, measure shot functions.

I got the S2 at a Thanksgiving sale at Golf Galaxy. Cost was $97, around half of original price. As allezton hinted, it's not fancy, but it gives all the basics plus yardage to doglegs, carry for hazards.

Won a Garmin S20 and found a watch way better than a clip on the bag model (Bushnell NEO) that I'd been using.

I like the watch aspect of the S2. Used a rangefinder the past two seasons, but you have to carry RF, lay it down on damp ground on cartpath only days, etc. Will still use rangefinder for ranging my clubs and helping on USGA course rating team, but not on-course.

I forgot to mention that the Sycuan course(s) have GPS on their carts and in color with an fly over view of the entire track.I didn't bother to compare yardages, but they are probably the same. Another feature of the cart is they will give you an audible signal with message if you drive where you shouldn't, warnings of snake infested areas, reminders where snack bar, ask if you want automatic electronic score kept for you, e.t.c.  Pretty neat!

Okay, I find it necessary to revisit this topic owing to the Garmin S2 I bought from Costco awhile back is starting to show its age and does not hold a charge very long. I am considering three:

Garmin S10  $145

Garmin S20 $179

Tom Tom 2 $185

I would like to keep the price below $200.

I recently bought the Garmin S20 and I really like it. Only used it a few times. It's lightweight and seems to be accurate when I compare yardages with my Bushnell range finder. Battery seems good too. I suspect it would last 2 rounds with some battery life to spare. I'm not a fan of the proprietary charging cable. But a replacement cable can be found on ebay/amazon for $6 or so...

Thank you. I am leaning towards the S20 as the only complaint I have for the approach S2 is its failure to maintain charge, When I first got it, I could get nearly three rounds of golf OR three weeks as a simple watch. Now it more like 1 round or 4 days as a watch.

    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
