Ok, this is getting pretty scary.Β  Over the past few seasons, I've addressed my two biggest issues of need:Β  1) hitting par 3 greens and making pars to reduce a pathetic 4+ stroke average on those holes; 2) put a club in the bag to eat up yards on par-5 holes and get around the green on longer par 4 holes.

That awesome paragraph sums up pretty much ALL of my goal right at the moment. I feel like the rest of the stuff on and around the greens will clean itself up with regular play and some focused effort. Congrats on the recent success!

Idk how to feel right now. Shot a 91 yesterday and hit my driver exceptionally well, which has NEVER happened before. I also shot 6 over par on the back nine and have discovered a method which seems to prevent me from hitting any kind of terrible shot. (Still some poor ones,Β but nothing remotely terrible) The big question now is was it a fluke or have I finally learned how to play in a way that actually resembles golf instead of yard work? Only time will tell...my next round is probably six days a way...feels like an eternity at the moment.

ive been there. My next round I parred the first 3 holes...then fell off a cliff and shot 102.

Id say take it one shot at a time. Keep your expectations low but still be confident in your stroke.

btw 91 is still my personal best :)

I shot an 81 in March. Β I promptly went home...Β told my wife I finally 'got it'...Β texted my golf buddies and told them I'd posted a career low... and then played a tournament 4 days later and shot an even 100. Β

:pound:

Since then, I've posted a handful of decent scores (88, 90, 87)... but it's helped me to set my expectations on a more level setting. Β I'm still capable of blowing 7 balls out of bounds and posting a 105... or not losing a single ball and posting a 91. Β

It's a big reason why I tell people I love this game... and then I tell people I hate this game... and then I tell people I love it again. Β It's an abusive relationship that I'm willing to endure!

Enjoy the high of posting a really good score... then go into your next round with confidence but no expectations. Β

Keep us posted on how you make out in your next round!

Usually my irons are the strongest part of my game and my driver and wedges let me down. Β For the last week it's been reverse. Β I'm driving the ball straighter and longer than ever, my woods are okayΒ and I'm pitching and chipping really well, but I've been hitting my irons really fat. Β

I shot a 97 today and only hit one iron shot well, didn't score under a 4 on any par 3. Β  Hope the stars and planets align soon so I can actually see what my game looks like when everything is close to working for me, so frustrating. Β

Finally hit a +6 at my course. Still think Im too small of a hitter, and really getting concerned about the gap between my 8 iron and 9 iron. According to GG, its almost a 20 yard difference. Screwing up my 9 iron distance cost me twice this round I would say. I might have to live with it being 110 yard club, and somehow compensate for it when between an 8 or 9. Might just need a bigger sample size too.

Β

Also, my putting could still be better.

Congrats on the breakthrough. Why not try to 'lock in' that feel a bit with some light range work before your next round?

Just don't make the mistake I often do with now that it feels locked in to 'go at it' extra hard. Just repeat what's working and enjoy the nice ball flight and consistent impact.

Played last week and hoping to get out Saturday if weather holds up. Was playing my usual hacker style on the front but then had my first EVER greenside up and down Β par from a bunker (and it was high lip short side etc. My SM5 K grind is a godsend) on 8 and another up and down birdie from about 30 ydsΒ on 9 a short par 5. 46 at the turn. I'm feeling good. Definitely breaking 90 today.

Β

53 on the back. Playing partners shot 88 and 89.

at least I broke 100

Thanks man. Let's see what happens tomorrow. I'm replacing my 52 degree with my old 54 degree tomorrow. Doesn't fill that gap to my AP1 Gap WedgeΒ as well but I'm soooooooo much more comfortable hitting it.

Well, shot a 102 (53-49). Felt like it was a lot worse but I avoided any really bad blow ups. Putting was horrific. 38 putts but a lot were missed 3 footers after solid chips. Wedges and my tight Lies 16 degree wood were the only positives. (For the most part)Β OnΒ one par 3 I actually hit a solid 6 iron just left of the green and almost chipped in, but then also missed the 3 foot comebacker for par.

Lots of OOB and topped irons. I think it is due to an early release causing me to hit thin or pull long clubs off the tee.

back to the drawing board.

PS

Also, I'm a 23 and this round reminded me that I probably shouldn't be posting in this thread yet.

I thought the same thing about my game and it kept me out of this thread. But I was invited to stick around and maybe you should too. Pros game goes back and forth and were not pros. I shot a 101 and followed it up just a week later with a 91. Just cus your a 23 doesnt mean you shouldnt be here. Most 23s are at least capable of bogey golf and I think thats a little more the point here. Get back to thatΒ drawing board, be confident and work on your putting and you just might be surprised!

I agree with @stealthhwkΒ : if your goal is breaking 90, then all is good! I seeΒ your tag line under your avatar says "Playin for Bogey" and that's a 90.Β So stick around!Β Plus,Β @rkim291968Β is a happy, retired guy nowΒ anyhow, so he's likely mellowed on any strict HCP requirements for his threads. I think he just didn't want any of those snooty single digit guys messing with our mojo.Β :-D

Anyway, sorry to hear of the setback. Lots of OOB and topped irons is obviously an issue with the full swing, so sounds like a bit of work to get more consistent there. On rounds where my full swing is relatively solid and I advance the ball without many penalties (mostly), the strokes just melt off the card. Any time to work in your swing thread this year? Just took a peek, and looks like some good advice there in yours that from my experience with my lessons will lead directly to more consistency.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I have two little ones at home and my wife is back at work so I have very little range time. I save any free golf time for golf right now, not golf swing. I think I might just move the ball back in my stance as a band aid for now. I know that's prob sacrilege to say but that's me.

I hear that. I put my clubs down for those years, as it was too difficult to make that work at all. In hindsight, I wish I hadn't, so good luck!

One idea is to pick one thing every week to do around the house for 5 minutes a day while doing whatever with your kids. You don't even need a club or go to a range.Β You pick something likeΒ centered hip rotation. Every time you see a mirror in your house, practice what you've learned. The family will laugh, but you'll ingrain stuff at home.Β

That's what I wish I'd done in those years, so thought I'd pass along. I've learned that it's the regular practice on the small stuff that counts. In a mirror, with instant feedback. (video even better) You won't even notice it bleeding in. Thus far it has helped me change my picture from the end of last season, and I'll be back in this thread until I can shoot under 90 consistently! Any day now!Β :-D

Its weird but despite playing terribly, (look how bad those tee shots cost me...) I loved this round. Its one of Manitoba's best courses, and I was the only one on the course starting a late 9holes at 8pm on Friday night. It was very peaceful to be out on such a nice course alone.

Something I had not experienced yet as I dont usually play this late, but a mid-game change in green speeds because of dew/water on the grass in the evening as temps drop. Resulted in my first 3putt in a LONG time on one of the later holes.
