This table tells it all.  Look at McIlroy, below the field in putting and just barely above average short game, yet is 5th on this list.  Look at those guys towards top who all have below average putting, but because their full swing is really good, they gain a huge overall advantage on the field.

Okay I'm out,you guys have more stats than mr stat who lives in stat st on the planet stat......do you actually have time to play a shot in between all this statistical statistics?

stats can be made to say whatever you want them too imo..paralysis by analysis anyone?

I'm off to play golf by getting it in the hole as quickly as I can,I'll hit it,find it and hit it again.

been fun but you're too much for me bye........

It sure is great to have a world class short game and get up and down for an 8 though.  Otherwise one would have scored a 10....

That is exactly right. My short game takes a potential 6 and makes it into a 5. Whereas if I can get on in regulation, I am looking at par every time. It is really not that hard to 2-putt every green.

As long as the stats come from pure data, why would you want to disregard them. There is no political motivation here. Making decision based on data and data analysis is much more useful that adhering to an unfounded opinion.

This data isn't "made" to say whatever we wanted. It's not anecdotal, either.

Myself, Mark Broadie, and others have already figured out what the data means.

What you can take away from that you can learn in a matter of minutes. You could have learned it here had you chosen to open your mind to a new idea or two.

There's no paralysis by analysis. The rules and the take-aways are simple, and they apply to everyone. Everyone willing to spend 30 minutes, or 90 minutes, to learn them once and for all.

You're over in the UK, and you should look up a guy named Andrew Norrby. He is one of our Lowest Score Wins instructors.

Then go work on your full swing.

We've had golfers lower their scores and handicaps 3, 4, even 5 strokes just by understanding just our very basic approach to GamePlanning.

Just let me say a couple of things.  I used to believe the short game was more important than the long game.  After all, most strokes are not full swings, right?  Chipping, putting, pitching, right?  That's most strokes, right?   Ah, but...  how many of those strokes are 2 foot putts that anyone can make?  Take those out.   And how many strokes do you lose by missing a 10 foot putt vs air mailing your tee shot into the woods or into the water?   And how much do you need that great short game if you just hit the green in regulation?   That's why the long game is more important than the short game.   A bad tee shot is an absolute disaster.   A bad putt is a minor disaster.   A bad chip is a minor disaster.   Eliminate the bad chip by hitting the green with your approach shot.

My regular playing partner is a guy whose short game is way better than mine.  But I beat him almost every time.   The difference is, I put my drive in the fairway.

So, throw out statistics and tables and graphs if you want, and just think logically.   I'm as stubborn as anyone.   I have my opinions, and it takes a lot to move me, but I have changed my opinion on this subject.

@Marty2019 is right that he was stubborn but to his credit he was also open minded.

You have to factor in the expense, too.  A bad long game is expensive.  I've never lost a ball with a bad putt.

I believe you and I are of the same mind on this. I've seen you mention it several times. As one gets older, it becomes even more imperative. I've never met anyone who says they know it all, but I've met lots and lots of people who believe they know enough. The only way to live is to keep growing, and that means being open to new things. Being right is not as important as getting it right. This is as much a part of the mental game as anything I can think of.

And I always have a bit of doubt in my mind. That way, I know I can still change my mind without a lot of ego pain.

Keep making that important, Erik. It is.
