  • February picks are not exempt from this… but those of you hoping to be chosen in February have almost three weeks, so get on it. ;-)
  •
  • Other rules may follow if necessary. We'll append them to this first post.

Weather can play a role in whether a V-Log is complete or not.  Just for fun I was messing around with my camera this past weekend.  Some audio sections of the video were unintelligible because of the wind (not to mention the high temperature of 38 degrees).

Consideration could be given to an additional rule that partial V-Logs submitted prior to the end of the month are acceptable but selection of the candidate is conditional and requires a complete V-Log prior to the next selection date.

No, not super interested in getting into a whole bunch of conditionals and complications. Let's KISS. I know starting in February means a few more northern people can't get a video in, but the selection process runs through July, and I know who all of the current applicants are. I don't think I'll be choosing someone with this February pick that I otherwise wouldn't have chosen with a full list of submissions.

I understand your point, but since it shouldn't affect much in the end… I'd rather just Keep It Simple, Simon (cuz neither of us are stupid). Plus, we've had some good weather days. It was 75° here on Friday. :-) If people really want to be chosen, they'll be able to get a video put together by at least April.

Hope that makes sense.

Here goes,

I didn't realize I was doing this, but I had a hard time looking directly at the camera lens.  I have a little stage fright.  I'm also terrible at editing, but I did my best to make it look ok.

Shoe Size - 11 Nike or 10.5 FJ

Shirt Size - Large for all brands

Pants 34/34 for all brands

Good work!  I think if any extra weight is given to the winning putt celebration, then you are golden.  That was fantastic.  It even echoed!!!

Also, I feel you on the stage fright thing - I hate talking to video cameras too.  Whenever I've been to weddings and people come around with a camera and ask people to talk at it, I always really have to go use the bathroom. ;)

Unless some miracle (or curse) from the heavens scorches the earth to melt off all the snow for this afternoon, I think I will be waiting for March before submitting my vlog and application video.

So I have completed my VLOG (actually had 9 holes done) and questions, however, they are too big too upload to TST, so I chopped everything down to get it to upload to Youtube but then my youtube video is too large for TST.  So it's not looking like I will get my application in today, but hopefully I'll figure it out sometime.

You're limited by the fifteen-minute thing for newer accounts? You can chop it up and post the links to two or three videos.

https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/71673?hl=en

That should tell you how to upload videos > 15 minutes.

That was easy, now I have to chop it up and upload it.  Hopefully I'll get it done before 3 pm. Damn work getting in the way.

For my video, 18min, I just had to verify my account by putting in my phone number and sending a confirmation code.  It was super easy.

For mine, I went in under the assumption that the shorter I could possibly make it, the better - nobody wants to look at me any more than they have to.  :-P

I think I ended up around 14 minutes.  I would bet that you will also end up at least at 12 or more minutes ... unless you're the Micro Machines guy.  Remember him???

Still not letting me link my video that is about 13 minutes.  My question and answer will load, although I did it after I was done playing, it was pretty dark.  not sure yet, what I'm doing wrong.  Off to another meeting, maybe I'll figure it out when I get back.

Another weird thing, is that I was going to make a second VLOG with several other holes, but all of the video's with me talking were saved upside down.  :8)

So I posted some beginner tips on these vlogs over in @bkuehn1952's blog, but thought that I would share them over here as well.  Remember, these are tips for beginners from a beginner.  Experts on vlog making will probably have much better ideas, but if you're like me and had never done this before, I think some of these might help:

This isn't meant to sound like a brag, so if it does, I apologize ... but here are some things I learned when making mine.  I thought mine turned out pretty decent (for a first timer), even though I certainly had my share of issues.  A couple of shots were poorly framed , a couple were poorly lit, and I also had at least one segment that was ruined by wind.  (Since it was only one segment, I just ended up adding the "audio" as text into my post.  In retrospect, I think I should have "closed captioned" it like I did for the one line you can't hear after my second shot on the par 5)

So, by no means was it even close to perfect, however, it turned out decent and most importantly, it turned out that it was incredibly easy.  Based on this one attempt, here would be my simple beginner tips:

  • If you're alone, then obviously you need a tripod of some kind, whether it's a gorilla tripod that you can attach to your pull cart or a regular tripod that you setup at each shot.
  • Using your iPhone is fine, but I found it really easy to use my Canon dslr.  One benefit here is it's possible to frame the shot while in it because you can flip the preview screen around.  (I didn't do that this time, but if I was going for quality and wasn't in any kind of rush, I think I would)
  • Erik's suggestion about blocking the mic with a headcover if its windy is a great idea - I will try that next time too.
  • If it's early or late in the day, unless you are good with manually adjusting the metering, I suggest always putting the camera between you and the sun.  It's a vlog, not a swing video, so you can afford to be more "artsy" and less technical, so it's ok (probably even better) if the camera is at lots of different angles for each shot.
  • Use iMovie.  It's so incredibly easy to compile, edit, trim, add titles, audio, transitions, etc, to make your vlog look better.  Fiddle around with it a bit and you'll see what I mean.

Hopefully that helps some people.

No, doesn't matter to me. I care about the content almost exclusively. I don't even really care about the production quality so long as I can hear and see the content.

To add to this part, I couldn't share directly from imovie to youtube, but I was able to save to my desktop under a quicktime video and then upload to youtube.

Yeah, I recommend saving the file out and uploading manually.

    • Eh. He broke ONE of Tiger's records. Youngest to be ranked #1 in AJGA. It didn't help that Tiger's birthday is in late December, or that Tiger didn't play many AJGA events before he was 15. Did he do any of these things? TIGER WOODS' AMATEUR VICTORIES YEAR WIN(S) 1984 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1985 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1988 Boy's 11-12 Junior World Golf Championships   1989 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships   1990 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships, Insurance Youth Golf Classic   1991 U.S. Junior Amateur, Boys 15–17 Junior World Golf Championships, Orange Bowl International Junior Look at some other AJGA Players of the Year. How many of these names do you recognize? A few, for sure. I assure y'all, I'm not trying to pee in your Cheerios. I just don't get what the point is. Okay. I get that, then. Thanks.
    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
    • Day 1: Spent some time hitting some balls. Working on my hips and a “soft” and straight trail arm.
    • Slight digression on the way to my point. Back in the day there were a lot of people who said that Tiger won because of “the Tiger effect” where people pushed too hard and made mistakes trying to catch him and fell by the wayside. I thought that was BS. It was just that he was that much better than them. I don’t think anything has changed my mind on that.    The hype about Miles Russell is very limited. I’ve seen nothing about him outside of some fairly hardcore golf websites. But I think that the reason those people are talking about him is because he is very good. Same as Tiger. And like I said he just broke one of Tiger’s records. That gets hardcore golf fans to pay attention.
