OP, are you sure that those are your only two options?

Quite a few pop up there. That's near the Scotswood course, but if you're in any direction, there appear to be closer golf courses.

Hi everyone,

I have 2 options for courses.  I have one course that is 30 minutes away that is a 18 hole par 3 course where I can get a all you can play and driving range pass for 350 and another that that is a full 18 hole course that is an hour away where I can get a membership for 550.  Which one would you guys recommend.

Heres the par 3

Here is the 18

$350 for unlimited range & Par 3 course?  I'd do that in a heartbeat.  Then pay per round anywhere else I play.

Where are you more likely to play more often?  I agree an 18 hole course would be my preference but if you don't get to play but a couple times per month, the closer option may be more viable.

Hi folks,

Yes there are other courses around.  I have done my best to keep in the sub 600 price point.  The cost of memberships in Winnipeg vary wildly from 275 to as high as $5000 with the average going for about $1200 which is out of my price range.  Hope that helps with the understanding.

I looked the par 3 course up on youtube and some of those holes look pretty hard.

Yes the course is very cool in that they took famous par 3s from around the world and made a course out of them so lots of water and lots of hills and one hole that is almost all sand from tee to green.

Don't forget the price of gas. A $1100 membership 10 minutes away may be cheaper than a $600 membership an hour away.

It sounds like you're going to be facing a trade-off either way. Playing nothing but a par-3 course wouldn't be my ideal, but neither is driving an hour every time I wanted to play. I don't know about you, but both would lead me to end up playing less.

It's really not. Not at all.

100 yards and in accounts for only about 1/3 of the difference between scores.

Yeah, I guess I should have qualified it, as it applies to me. I'm consistent but short off the Tee, my top rounds are when I can one putt or get consistently up and down from around the green. Though I would not consider a 100 yard shot to be a chip, I was thinking greenside, twenty yards and in. It seems intuitive to me, but there may very well be stats that prove me wrong. I live with my wife and 19 year old granddaughter, I'm used to being wrong.

yeah i'd say join the par 3 but play other courses often too. Especially if the driving range is good.

I'm thinking what I will do is use Fantasy as a home base for practice and play other courses otherwise.  I have been collecting 2 for 1s and other coupons for a while so hopefully that will help keep the costs down.

Plenty of stats, yes.

How long is the season?

$300 isn't bad if it's a 6 month or more season, even if all you do is the range.  Given your handicap, I think the short course and range will be just as good with the couple of times a month visiting a full course.  That's pretty close to to what I do though my course is longer, 3161 yards, and has 4 par fours..

I couldn't go for the 1 hour one way trip, even 30 minutes feels to far to me.  I've left my house at 5:30 AM played 18 holes and have been back home just after 8 AM.  That shorter time commitment really gets me on the course a lot more often.

You might ask yourself what you want to get out of golf? An 18-hole round on a par 3 course can be every bit as satisfying as one on a longer course, no less challenging, and takes less time. The difference on the ground is 14 chances to hit a driver, which you can get by playing a long course every now and then.

    • First (12 holes) round in a year, maybe the third round in five years. After prioritizing family for a long time, I’m ready to play more golf. We moved back where I grew up and started playing golf. The course is close, but only six holes and pretty short, so the longest club I bring is a 4i. It is very undulated, with a lot of elevation changes and 4/6 greens are blind shots. The long game was relatively good (relative to my game and swing). Got things to work on, but the current state is manageable. One OB. Wedges and short game was atrocious. Chunking like I was making a garden. On the worst hole I chunked a 58° approach, then chunked three chips in a row… Time to search up some chipping topics and start practicing. I’ll take this over bad long game and good short game. The short game is easier to fix. Shot a net +17(!), gross +23, over 12 holes.

    • playing with cleveland hybrid irons have friends that use hybrids anyone using hybrid irons or hybrids would appreciate fwwdback
    • I dont know if I really have a favorite, but there are two that have stuck in my mind for a very long time. #15 at Erie Golf course during the Finals of the EDGA Matchplay. Was up early and then lost a few holes in row so the match was close again. My opponent had a short putt for birdie. I hit past hole high, but 35 feet right. I drained the putt and looked over at my opponent who was in disbelief.   #8 at Whispering Woods during another year of the EDGA Matchplay. Was playing a very cocky opponent who made sure to mention on the first tee how many times he won the club championship at this course. I hammered this 30 footer that clanked off of the pin and dropped. My opponent was disgusted and that made me weirdly happy. I went on to win 5&3 or something like that, so that entire day has stayed in my memory.
