Dude.... you're clueless. He quit to TAKE CARE OF HIS WIFE! His wife had a difficult preg. and was bed ridden during the whole preg. How is taking care of your wife not having heart? If anything he has more heart than you do. It was a simple choice. Learn some facts about people before you make assumptions. You know the old saying about making assumptions right?

He took quite a long time off, that's for sure. Phil's wife just had cancer and he took some time off. But he came back because golf is what he does. He has the heart to compete at this level. He took a reasonable amount of time off and he isn't using his wife's condition as a crutch or an excuse. Duval hasn't been relevant in like 7 years. That's a hell of a pregnancy!

I'm sorry, but I know an athlete with heart and desire when I see one and DD might have some of that right now but he hasn't for a long while. He mailed it in after his major win. It happens to a lot of people in sports. He got to the top and didn't see anywhere else to go. He let some life distractions ruin his focus and fell apart. He could have been a great all-time golfer but that apparently wasn't important to him. Why? Because he didn't desire it enough to put in the time and practice and effort to be the best. Why are you making it personal with me? We are talking about David Duval, not us. I don't have anything to do with this. We have absolutly no evidence if I have heart or not here. Again, why are you saying things about me? David Duval is the topic. Not you and not me. Please stick to the topic.

Well let's see what he did in his time off.... he started a golf course design company, he had vertigo which didn't help his game, back issues, broke his wrist snow boarding, and watched his kids grow up a little bit. Anyone have any idea what tour pro's go through with their kids playing? They never see them. Ask any player on the Champ. Tour about what's the one drawback about playing tour golf. They all say the same thing. I missed my kids growing up. Someone shouldn't be dogged b/c you don't know anything about them and what they were going through. It's easy for someone to sit on a computer and say that a player doesn't have any heart b/c they don't know what was going on in their lives. It's no secret that he had injuries. I just don't like to see someone dog someone b/c they took care of his personal responsiblities and took care his family which was more important than golf at the time while he healed and they tried to figure out why he was expierencing virtago. How can he play when he can't even walk straight?

So, he started a course design company, went out snow boarding and was more interested in his kids. That's fine and a great way to live a life. One most of us would envy. But it proves he didn't have the heart to be one of the greatest golfers for an extended period of time.

Jim Furyak has battled vertigo as well. I agree, it hasn't helped him at all. I think DD is a great guy from what I've read and seen and admire what he was able to do on the tour at one point being the #1 in the world. I just believe he got caught up with other things and in addition to some bad breaks just didn't have the desire to be the worlds best golfer like so many guys out there grinding every day do have. How can you we look at a guy like Tiger and say DD has the same kind of heart Tiger has? I'm not sure how Tiger keeps pushing himself. It's amazing the heart that guy has.

the guy is simply saying, some people have different priorities. Personally I have to two little ones, (one is a toddler) so I literally took a few years off before coming back strong. My game suffered, actually stunk for a while and it was hard to swallow. But getting promoted, helping my wife with the little ones, and spending time with my family was more valuable. golf aint going anywhere and its even sweeter now.

no matter what it is, its all about balance. I think the poster was just saying Duval is not worried about people who bash him, he lives for himself and prioritizes the way he wants. Hes doing quite well now and Im happy for him.

If Duval can win a tour event again, and I think hes making great strides, he will be singing on the 72nd hole the Frank Sinatra song..."I did it my way"

I would say comeback now complete now for Duval after his t18th at The Canadian Open-he is 109 in the FedEx Cup standings and should now qualify for the play offs- and then after earn some fun money in the autumn tournaments. He is a mystery to me- i would say lose a few lbs in the off season and get a bit more help with the back- once his confidence returns he will be a great player.

I think his problems had more to do with his injuries and vertigo. A lot of people criticized his awkward swing... I've always loved his swing, it's very easy and relaxed almost like Ernie. Duval makes striking the ball look effortless. When he was playing his best... his swing produced some of the greatest ball striking of all time. When he was winning all those tournaments he was almost unhuman, he could command shots exactly the way he wanted them, hit it exactly how he wanted too and would never miss. He could do things even great tour players could only dream about. Phil is a great player, but I still think Duval was the only player that could stand straight up to Tiger and challenge him every year, every tournament. I would love to see him win another tournament or major. He's shown flashes of greatness in the last couple years, T2 at the US Open in '09 for example... I don't think his game went anywhere, he still has the ability, it's the injuries and vertigo that are holding him back from playing great every week.

I hope he wins again he seems to be working very hard to get it back. I had the chance to meet him at the U.S. Open in 96 at Oakland hills and he was one of the nicest athletes I have ever met.

He is in the playoffs at The Barclays, meaning he is in the top 125 of the moneylist, does this mean he gets his card for the 2011 season?

If it is similar to last year, he will get his card.

He was close to making 125 last year in the fall series, should be easier but by no means easy this year. All the 100-150 position guys will play their hearts out.

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
