If they keep going low today (Friday), look for the USGA to go draconian over the weekend. This can't be sitting well with the "Par is a good score" crowd.

Dustin Johnson hits into the group ahead of him.  Rude!

</sarcasm>

But seriously, he just nearly drove a 360 yard par-4.  I bet he out-scores his playing partners who laid up on this hole.

They had a good discussion about this on the radio today. Erin Hills is going to have to show some teeth the next couple days if it's going to see another U.S. Open. While it looks spectacular on TV, having scores similar to the Bay Hill Invitational isn't going to make the USGA too happy. And given heavy rain tomorrow which should soften the course back up, I'm not sure you're going to see scores come back down tomorrow.

There's no water & no trees. But those greens are pretty undulating, so that's what they got to work with.

I can see some real sketchy pin positions on top of nobs & whatnot being employed by the USGA to get their pride back. They don't want a 15-under champ.

500 yard par 4's. crazy.

That they're hitting 8 irons into. Someone (Fowler?) had gap wedge into a 515y par 4 yesterday.

Meh - I can hit a gap wedge approach shot into a 500+ yard par

for my 3rd shot

Goes to show you length doesn't add difficulty to a course. This course is the longest major ever and there's 40 guys under par. Merion was one of the shortest U.S. Open venues we've seen since 2000, and it even played soft, and the winning score was +1. Congressional was also a monster of a course and that saw record low scores in 2011.

Rahm may need to put the big dog away for the day.....he is missing fairways by a mile.....And rickie is not as sharp today.  Be interesting to see how rickie manages his game when he is not quite hitting it as solid as yesterday.

And just like that, Rickie is back in the lead.  Nice long chip in (might have been a T-wedge).

Jesus, guys are still throwing absolute darts at these pins. Unreal.

I can throw darts at pins all day.

It's the part where I'm supposed to hit a golf ball at it, using golf clubs, that causes trouble for me.

Look at Rickie leaving the flagstick in like a boss!

I wonder if the winning score will be worse than the leading score after 36 holes. Course doesn't seem to have much of a defense right now.

Mike Davis was just on TV talking about how that's never really been a concern of his, and they've never discussed it in his 20-some years of setting up the golf courses.

Yes it does. Categorically untrue statement. If this course was 6700 yards, the scoring average would be much lower.

There's more to scoring than the ONE factor you're talking about here. You know this.
