Driver from the runway, kind of like in Tin Cup

@nevets88, hmmm, not so good on the sole of the driver I would think, unless you would be using a rubber tee or something.

So...if the money was on the line, would you guys go with a strong, full swing and wager that you could hit the ~100' wide runway on a line that kept it running?  Or more of a punch swing that maybe carries ~100-150yds., but more apt to be on a line down the middle?

I think I'd go with the low punch.

Assuming a blind contest (don't get to see your buddy's result to beat), as otherwise it'd be an easier choice.

I'd go with full swing, to minimize the off center bounce. I've never really taken notice of how flat a runway is (guess next time I'll take notice), I know they are swept for debris, but assuming not flat enough for a true bounce for a golf ball.

This is my reaction as well. There are cracks and I'm not sure if there is a tiny bit of slope in runways to help with rain run off. If it was perfectly flat and smooth it might go until the runway runs out....if you can hit it straight.

I once played in a member-guest at Mountain Air Country Club in western NC. http://mountainairnc.com/amenities/golf/

One of the unique features of the golf community there is the private landing strip that runs right through the middle of the golf course.  And one of the (club-sanctioned) activities during one of the evenings was a long-drive contest down that very runway.  Its damn tough to hit it straight enough to get it to go anywhere.  And for those who don't know, the surface is sloped towards both edges in order to efficiently shed water, so its even harder to have the ball continue to go down the runway.

a little straying from topic, but the course at MCAS Miramar was originally placed there as an emergency alternate runway. Back then, there were not many trees of any size. The pines I remember were all the same height at about six to eight feet, now towering closer to sixty if I had to venture a guess.

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.

And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
