I was asked this today on the first tee. The guy I was paired with asked me what score I might shoot today. I told him an 81 would be just fine. He thought he would shoot a 90. I shot an 83, and he shot a 89. I lost. :-P

I always have a number in mind when I start a round. Usually it's an 80. If I take some time warming up on the driving range, depending how I hit the ball on the range, and/or putting green, it can be a +/- on my 80 number.

So next time out, what number are you going to shoot?

My scoring average at home it´s 73, it depends on weather conditions. Earlier this month in good sunny days I shoot a couple under par rounds, but last week i shoot 82 in almost the worst conditions i can imagine.

I guess I've never given a thought to a score prior to playing.   I do have a plan for a each hole before playing, hoping to shoot par.

78.  2 strokes under my scoring average.

Interestingly, I never expect to shoot 2 strokes over my scoring average.  I wonder why that is.... ;-)

I usually shoot for 71-72.  I play at a par 73 course so 1-2 under is the goal every time.  My last few rounds have seen anything from a 70-77...but 71-72 is always the goal.

I think par. That is what I expect on every hole. Realistically I expect low eighties but no specific number at the start. I am always trying to shoot the lowest possible so I wouldn't want a low expectation to hinder a round.

    • Day 159 1-19 Flow drill while attempting to add arch in wrist on downswing. Not where it needs to be but felt good working on swing flow.
    • Day 1 (19 Jan 26) - after a week lay-off due to travels, felt great to get in some drills in the backyard today.  Started with lead arm only short pitches focused on squared face and light divot post ball.  Haven’t done this in a while and it showed, with some skulls and slices.  Settled into easy flighted balls - wrapped up with standard two handed swings.  Good restart to the daily drills.
    • That depends what you do within those two.  Are they your only options?   Check out Fit for Golf if you get a moment.  It's linked on the sidebar;  I did it for two years, stopped for a really bad reason, and I plan to get back to it soon.   Mike Carroll also has a great free podcast about a lot of topics in golf fitness.
    • Day 19, 1/19.  Finished work in time to spend 25 minutes hitting balls (hit 15) indoors, off a mat, into the net.  Usual focus.
    • Day 30 - 2026-01-19 Got 10 minutes in on the mat / net working on exagerrating movements I'm working on. And grip. Also worked with my friendly AI to summarize key negative tendencies I have so that I can build a personal checklist to follow. Will do more mirror work tonight.
