Hi! Just recently caught the bug. I had played golf with my grandpa a few times a year growing up from when I was 7 up to maybe 16. Took the last 9 or 10 years off. My grandfather passed away in February, and I guess part of my grieving process has been playing a lot of golf. Which is great. I'm improving quite a bit and want to know how to take my game to the next level. Particularly with swing analysis and lessons for swing consistency and around the green. Few facts about me, I'm a 6'7" lefty, swing speed around 110mph. Shooting in low to mid 80s, broken 80 a few times.

Welcome to TST, and sorry to hear about your grandfather.  Mine played golf but sadly I wasn't interested when he was around.  I'm glad you were able to enjoy it with yours while you could.

Welcome to the community and to golf. For clubs and such starter sets can be had at divks or heck even Walmart for that matter. Used clubs are an option which is what I did. By the way this is my first year golfing. I found a used set of pings at a garage sale 4-9 irons and a pitching wedge,  of course you'll need a putter.  I went to play it again sports and got a driver just got one that looked in good shape and felt good in my hands. A bag(unless you buy a set that includes it and shoes. I played in my tennis shoes for a bit but spikes do make a difference. A good book to read IMO is Ben Hogan's the 5 lesson fundamentals of modern golf. Great and easy to read not tech talk. Not sure where you are but look for places like golf galaxy or 2nd swing golf stores. With them you can get a custom fitting usually free if you buy clubs.   Your local course should have an instructor and a few lessons will be a great starting point. Your new so remember have fun. Score means nothing till you learn the game. Ask the course you wanna play best times when it quiet and deserted that way your not rushed. Scuch s shot heck try again. Balls in the beginning look for quantity not quality your gonna lose bunches lol. I started on a par 3 9 hole city course. Not long and usually not a lot in your way. I used nothing but irons the first few weeks. So time on the course and driving range is great. Watch YouTube videos for things you think are going weird they helped me. Good luck and any question everyone here is awesome. Helped me bunches. Played my first full 18 yesterday got a 106 but had the time of my life. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither will your golf game. Just enjoy

    • after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....
    • this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.
    • day 57. Technique practice in the net. Really trying to slow down.
    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
    • As we've had to tell other people, the topic is which is the better GOLFER, not human being.
