Welcome back Keith.  If I might ask, did you do anything to help with the golfers elbow?  Unfortunately, for the past couple months mine has started to flare up (the outside part of the elbow.)  I've never had a history of any joint issues before but my right elbow started getting sore a couple months back and nothing, aside from some doses of ibuprofen, has helped at all.  Once golfing season is over (November-ish) i'm going to get it checked out.

It's something I can play through for now but I don't want to have this the "norm" going forward.

Thanks, and again, welcome back!

Fairways and Greens.

Thanks for the welcomes folks,

NCGolfer the short answer is no.  The Doctor told me that the elbow would never heal as long as I continued to play golf weekly and as each week passed the issue got worse until the pain was with me daily.  Weekend golf just ramped up the scale every time.  Once it gets to a certain point the recovery time becomes months so if you need to stop, stop,  its the best long term solution.  If your arm is just sore the next day that's not too bad, but if you can feel the effects for 2 or 3 days then you really should cut the season short in my opinion.  It's a personal choice of course, but I played on with the pain and I wish I hadn't.

Welcome back and Welcome to The Sand Trap. I feel your pain, literally, but it is my left knee. I am out of commission until after surgery.

Take it slow when you play and listen to your body.

Spot on advice. I had to take 3 months off a couple of years back thanks to tendonitis in my left wrist. Couldnt even bend it for 2 months. Its hard to stop especially when you see your putter in the spare room and think "A little putting cant hurt can it?", turns out it can!

After the 3 months it took a while to get back to full swings and then playing again.

SOmetimes you just have to bite the bullet and listen to your body. Anyway, the wife always seems to find things to do around the house ;-)

    • Hello Golfing Buddies, It has been awhile since I posted but I am the Retired Old Man that asked for advice because I suffered two "T.I.A.'s about switching from playing right handed to playing left handed.  I purchased a Callaway Edge Left handed golf clubs. I changed the grips to oversize grips.  Well, two weeks ago and still at 79 years old, I shot a 44 and 47 on a small course in my hometown.  I am currently changing my shafts from regular flex to Senior flex.  So, you can see' it can be done! So, you other old timers; get with the program! Blessings to all of you. Retired Old Man (Terry Warner)

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
