Day 452 - April 30, 2019 - Good backswing, move, pump, and downswing day. Lot of good work done in a few minutes. Lower body wasn't doing much at first, but got it going.

Day 293

An hour at a local course's practice green, mainly to read the green.  This green has a lot of undulation.  Interesting that the actual greens on the course have far less.

Within 6' I did quite well, most dropped and those that did not were simple tap ins.

Beyond 10', the success rate for drops dropped significantly, primarily from misreading the green.

I do not practice this nearly enough, so more planned for tomorrow.

Day Seven:

I played 18 holes today. I'm pretty sure my index will go down tomorrow. With the 38 and 34 combined from last week, and the 71 I shot today (with a bogey at 18). I'm pretty sure it will.

Day 483

Worked on uneven lies this morning. Up/down hill lies. Side hill lies with ball above, and below my feet.

The usual focuses. Posture to match the slope as needed. Ball postlition forward or back as needed. Clubing up, or down as needed. Weight distribution on feet as needed. Aiming club face left or right, open/closed of target as needed. Then, just putting a good swing on the ball. Sounds like a lot, but as much as I practice these shots, they are preety much automatic for me.

The goal, like the rest of my specific practices, is to not be surprised when on the course, playing for a score. That, and more shots I have in my bag, the better my scoring.

DAY 528   VERY windy, so my driver fitting was cancelled!! :-(  So I spent a little more than 2 hours on the range working to rotate around my spine rather than sway!!   Many this is taking forever to get right.  I am hitting shots a lot better than 6 months ago, just need to continue to focus on this.  Whenever I get frustrated/depressed.. I remember an article I read about PGA Tour player Tom Pernice, Jr, saying it took him 18 months to make a change in his backswing that he could totally trust.

Day Eight:

Index down to 5.9 after revision. I can't possibly keep up this. So today was a take it easy day. Just focusing on that weight shift with arm swings in the mirror. Weight shift is good, no step-through.

Day 294:

Twice around the practice green today, things were a bit better from 10' with a few more dropping, moved the last round back to 12'+ and was about 20%t in on first poke.  So over two days felt good about either sinking them first putt or at least getting them close to tap in range.

Day 484

Open range practice today for me. Pretty sure this is the way most folks use driving ranges.

I set up in the middle of the stations, and hit balls using various clubs, to the various flags, located at various yardages. Maybe call it target practice

This gives me the opportunity to use all of the clubs in my bag, with various length back swings.

No real focusing on my part, other than set up, and club face aim.

I did have a goal, which was land balls near the flags I targeted.

i also hit a variety of shots. Punches, lobs, full swings, etc.

Just an easy morning practice, prior to round of golf later on today.

Chipping, pitching, bunker shots, putting for about 15 or 20 minutes. Then hit full shots with a gap wedge, 8i, 5i, and 5w focusing on my weight shift. Did that for right around 40 minutes. (10 minutes per Club)

Mirror work at the gym focusing on lower hands at A6. Emphasis on right elbow position. Did some slower swing hitting foam balls with a 6 iron and driver. Hope to get our league 9 in latter, but the weather doesn't look promising.

DAY 529    Only had the chance to spend 90 minutes on the range before the showers!!!  Am feeling better and better about my ball striking.  I am doing a better job rotating my thoraic spine rather than swaying off the ball and swaying forward past the ball on the downswing.  Only a million more reps to go  :-)   Used the step through drill quite a lot today to help me get my weight to the front/left side, and it also really requires me to stay in posture (rotate versus sway) to hit solid shots.

Day 1.  Okay, let's do this again.  I've actually been back for a few days, but I didn't record them here (and those are the rules, no complaints on my part since it's my fault).

Anyway, today I spent 20 minutes chipping (real grass, real balls, but the green hadn't really been mown or rolled or whatever makes it green-like in a while) and another 20 minutes putting.  If it seems like I'm cramming for a test, I am:  fourball match coming up on Saturday!

Day 14: Went to the range for about an hour. Spent 30 minutes hitting balls, getting video, and working on translating that feel of my head staying back into live swings. Video looks good on that aspect. Then went and practiced short game for the other half hour. Working on pitching and chipping. Mostly just getting reps to get my feel for speed back to where it should be. I liked what I was doing overall. Need to be a little cleaner when lining up to make sure I'm aiming where I want to.

    • Day 22 (30 Mar 26) - Worked with the local Christian academy golf team today in their practice session at the course.
    • What I'm saying is the club going out in transition is something I noticed a long time ago. I saw it, and my way to fix it at the time was on my backswing to suck it way inside and get my arms too deep (and too low it turns out), so that when I move the club out in transition it's moving it back to straight. I'm now trying to undo sucking the club inside. The club moves out like that now because it has to to get back to the ball from where I am at the top. If I get the club to the right place in the backswing then I can work on changing my downswing so I don't do that club out in transition thing. If I try to fix the body first, I won't be able to get the club back to the ball. I need to give myself the room to make the right move in transition.
    • I'm not sure I'm reading you right. You're trying to undo pulling the club across your body first? If I'm reading that right, that's definitely backwards. It's what you're doing with your legs, hips, and chest that force you to do that. Impossible to fix the pull across without fixing the body first. If you "fix" that with your body doing what it is now, then you'll be swinging like a foot outside the ball and never make contact. I write "fix" because if you get your body moving the right way the pulling across the body problem will more or less fix itself, mostly if not perfectly. If that's obvious and I'm misreading, I apologize.
    • I find this new ABS system interesting on its potential impact on the game of baseball from the pitching perspective.  The ABS system is projecting a 2D plane at the middle of the plate, instead of having the strike zone be a 3D box (really the dimension of the plate, but no pitcher is nicking that back triangle of the plate).  MLB to test automated ball-strike challenge system during spring games Umpires first began calling both balls and strikes way back in 1864, and baseballers have been arguing about those calls ever since. Strike-zone judgment has been the subject of some untold number of verbal (and, yes... I was thinking, this should have a big impact on pitchers who throw breaking balls. The breaking ball now has to be thrown higher up in the strike zone to catch the bottom of the new 2D zone. If the 2D zone is about the correct dimension of the previous strike zone, that 2D zone would be at the front of the plate. Now it is 8.5" back. So, the same breaking ball has to be thrown much higher to hit the new position of that low part of the plate. If the ball curves dramatically towards the end of the pitch, where the hitter has to hit the curveball (typically 8 inches in front of the plate), then the curve ball is maybe like 6 inches higher than normal? Just throwing out a number. I think that turns what use to be an at the knee strike into a something a hitter would crush.  Maybe the opposite is true, that breaking balls at the top of the zone might be more in play. It might look more that the ball is at the shoulders and hit the top of the plate. Maybe pitches who can delay the vertical break of the ball till much later might still see the same success since that delay allows them to keep the ball lower. I still think it will elevate any breaking ball pitch thrown low to clip that bottom of the strike zone.
    • Update from last lesson up in Erie, PA with Erik.  Backswing Hinge wrist early. Slight wrist rotation and hinging about 60 degrees away from the club at set up. So, 30 degrees from the toe line. It is going to feel like the entire hinge is done by A2.  As I hinge sooner and more, just turn to the top of the swing. The tricepshould come off the chest.  Feel a ton of width in right arm at top of swing. Downswing Keeping the width in the right arm. Bring the hands down to my right hip with a little right wrist extensions and left wrist flexion. Club head should feel like it is behind my right hip. This is done with the arms, not with the chest. Keep the chest high. It should feel like I am going to hit the ground 1-FT at about a 45-degree angle from the ball behind me.  ^This is in conjunction with the hands down. Get the left side back and around me. Feel very little to no weight shift. I shift like 6-7", I need to keep it about 3".  That feels like I pretty much don't slide at all.  Part of the turn is also pushing off with my left foot. Pushing my butt back behind me. This needs to happen almost immediately when my hands start to come down. It may need to feel like I do it before my hands go down. I am thinking that the feel of me shifting left onto my lead foot to push off is going to be part of the pushing off feel. If I am feeling that pressure at A4 or later, then it isn't soon enough.  Minor Injury notice: My back decided to spasm and lock up a bit when I was bent over tying my shoes. 😭. It's starting to feel better but still warning me to be careful. So, I will be taking a few days here to recuperate. I am then going to get back into the gym for some weightlifting. I think I need to strengthen up my core more to protect myself here.
