Day 157.  6' "make 'em twice" putting drill on a real green.  Four of the twelve fell by the second go-around (as in, made them first and second pass).  Four more had their second fall on the third go-around.  In total, I took 38 putts.  I know it's a small sample size, and probably an easy hole location, but wow would I love it if I could make 6' putts at that rate while playing;  the rate I made them during today's drill is just short of PGA Tour rate of 6' putts.

Oh, and here's an oddity.  4:00 (where 12:00 is straight downhill and 6:00 straight uphill) didn't make the first four go-arounds.  But I made it go-arounds five and six.  Every other location fell twice in the first four go-arounds.

Day 24: 8/10/2022

Played 9 holes for golf league last night.

The driver was all over the place. Hit some great ones and some real stinkers. Made 4 pars and 4 doubles ... and a pretty uneventful boogie. Shot 45.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Day 649: Got some range work in before it rained. I did get some DTL video but FO was not in the cards due to crowds. Worked on my drill with 6 iron and driver for 15-20 minutes. Then worked on set up with irons. Finished with partial wedges aimed at different targets. Very muggy too. Playing tomorrow AM.

Day 286 - Got to the range today after it stopped raining. Hit a small bucket, including 9 to 3 and full shots with Driver and 7-iron. Practiced hitting my 5-wood, then spent time in the practice bunker.

On the practice green I hit chip shots with my 58*, then did the "Makeable Putt drill", scoring 9 points. I hit mostly 2-putts (first putt beyond the hole), plus a 6' 1 putt and a 2-putt which ended up short. This is a terrific drill and my first attempt mirrored what I've been doing on the course....just missing (sometimes long sometimes short) and leaving a tap in. I'll add details to the thread later.

Day 158.  Putting practice for 50 minutes.  6' drill for "make each twice" took me 53 putts.   Small sample size and all that, and I wasn't able to get more than two to fall in the second go-around (as in, made the putt both the first two go-arounds), so that number is higher.  But... I'm happy.  I then did 8 step, 10 step, 12 step, 14 step putting for distance.

Hang in there, brother. I've been there. We all have. Driver is great at the range, but sucky on the course.

A couple of things.

  • It will come. Keep up your range work and it will transfer. Just know that it will ... eventually. Be patient. Stick to the plan.
  • Maybe try to hit the driver a little extra in warming up before the round? When doing so, try to find a swing thought that works "that day".
  • You can always try visualizing the range when on the tee-box. Imagine you are on the range. Really "see" the range. That can also get you thru.
  • If none of that works, one thing that sometimes works for me is to image the golf ball sitting on the tee is a nail, and nail is just started to be hammered into a baseboard. I'm trying to hammer that nail into a baseboard. But the only hammer I was given is 46" long. Forget all the mechanics and just try hitting the nail on the head.
  • Lastly, sometimes it only takes one round of hitting it well and suddenly everything kind of "clicks" into place. Sometimes it only takes one shot.

  • Thumbs Up 1

Day 26: 8/12/2022

I got some really good practice in today. Went to the range. Hit about 50 balls with my 6-iron. (Block Practice) How I did it was 5 balls at a time. Focusing entirely on one of three things.

  • Five balls focusing on a movement I'm trying to get right with my hips. Slow mo first. A little faster second. Then do it full speed with no ball. Then full speed with a ball.
  • The next five balls. Focused on a move I'm trying to get right in my backswing. Again, slow mo, a little faster, full speed no ball, and then full speed with a ball.
  • The next five balls. Focused on my hand path. Same as above. Slow mo, a little faster, full speed, then hit a ball.
  • Rinse and repeat.

Then I hit ten balls with the driver. I'm trying to improve my driver consistency. So, what I did was focus on a pre-shot routine and my set up. Tried to hit all 10 into an imaginary fairway.

Then I went over to the putting green and after warming up I did @iacas's "Makeable Putts Game". I scored 13 points... Not sure if that's good or bad. But I know I can do better.

Lastly, since I also want to improve my wedge play, I went over to the short game area and hit 36 different pitch shots from about 20 to about 70 yards. (Random Practice?)

I really wish I had time every day to do the practice I did today. I feel like everything I worked on are important things that can help me improve.

Day 18: I practiced one arm drills, 3-9 drills, and full swings. 6 iron then driver... I was working on face control. I tried varying my arm position at address, and worked on hand path in the downswing. Still not very happy with the results (shut face), but the errors were smaller tonight and they were almost all left. When I started out, it was big left and right misses. So maybe some progress.

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
