"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge

Recommended Posts

My irregular practice over the past 7-8 months has been quite bad (as far as dedication), I realize that posting daily helps with the motivation.  So I'm back to counting.

Day 1.  I hit balls for ~15 minutes in my home practice room today;  6-iron, using mirrors for rehearsals, real balls, into a net, off a mat.

Day 2.  I had ten minutes of 6-iron (full swing), followed by five minutes of 54 degree (half swing).  All of this was off a mat, indoors, into a net, with real balls.

Day 3.  I have a late start at work today, and before work, I snuck in five or so minutes with a 6-iron (indoor practice room at home).   Sure, I only hit a half dozen balls, but that's better than not practicing for the day (and they were good practice shots).

Day 7, July 13th, 2023

Went to the range at lunch. Worked on stopping the backswing where it, and actually feeling it stop. Worked on bring the club down better from the top of the swing. Spent some time with the driver. A bit of a mess today, but was feeling it go way too long. Really focused on feeling the swing stop short.

Spent about 15 minutes on short game, working on pivoting better in the backswing, and keeping my hands a bit wider.

Day 30: Jul 13

Played 18 holes at a different course. Shot -5 nett (which I’m still celebrating). A few wayward shots tee-to-green and a couple of sticky short game moments. But lots of good sensible golf.

Day 31: Jul 14

Lesson followed by range time. Club head/ball speed is increasing without losing significant form. But I can still slip into bad habits; I can catch myself when I see the trackman numbers then concentrate and create a better swing profile. But there’s a part of me that’s objecting to the idea that I can “feel” what’s a good/bad swing - I’m beginning to wonder if I need to stump up the money for a decent launch monitor that I can take to the range. That would provide the feedback and data needed to help me improve more effectively.

Maybe this is just part of the process and that it takes time to be able to feel what I’m doing on a given golf shot.

Day 4.  I spent some time (about twenty minutes, and about two dozen balls) this morning, indoors at my hitting room, trying the "Short Game Chef" stock pitch shot.  I think it's similar to what I remember Utley saying to do, but I'd have to re-read to reference that.   I think this was the first time I tried a pitch shot with a mirror behind me, to look for the club being inside.  I also thought (past-tense) it was what I was doing, but after trying a few with the key he gave in the video, it felt very different, but I was getting what seemed to be good shots (I was indoors, into a net, so who knows).  In any case, I'll give this a bit more try and try it outdoors.   My pitching at the moment is so hobbled together it barely deserves being called that.

If this is the quality of material The Golfer's Journal puts out, I may end up finally getting around to getting it.

Day 24 (14 Jul 23) - my son, grandson and I played Bradford Creek.  We arrived just as the rain was ending (played 1 and 1/2 of 2 in a light shower).  Only ones on the course so it was an easy pace. Greens super receptive all day as the area has had some frequent afternoon/evening showers.  Able to stick the ball so it was a good day to “flag hunt”.  Only took 10 clubs so I had to improvise on shots.  Great round of utilizing course management to plan shots, etc.

    • Finally completed the challenge! took me a long time to get hole number 4, which is a short par 4 that gently curves about 60 yards left starting at about 200 yards out and then the fairway necks down to the green. I have sometimes taken a 3W off the tee because I can push my drive and it then would enter a wooded area about 230 yards out. I pulled driver and blasted a push into the woods and it rattled around and ended up in the fairway about 60 yards from a back center pin. Spun a 58* wedge to about 2 feet:  There was a little break to it and the greens were recently aerated making a short putt a little more difficult.
    • Yes I’m still gaming the Edel.  I’ll have to see where I’m striking it on the face. I’m assuming if it’s low on the face my ball position is creeping too far forward?
    • You might even get more money for the trade in if the trade in is the old head and new shaft rather than old head and old shaft. I certainly can't imagine they'd offer less for it.

    • I'd compare the trade in value vs what similar ones have sold for recently, there's a pretty high chance you can sell it yourself for more than the trade in value plus you'd get to keep the shaft you like.
