Day 3: 8/23/2023

I played 18 today. I played alone on a course called Snow Hill. Never played there before. Started out like a house on fire. 3 GIR's on the first 3 holes. On hole 3 I three-putted from about 6 feet, which put a damper on things.

The front 9 was sold, nothing spectacular but made a 42 on a course I've never played before. Made a bogie on 10 and then an 8 on hole 11. Four-putted the GIR I made on hole 12.... then I just couldn't seem to get it back on track. Ended up going 42-51 for a disappointing 93.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Day 63 (23 Aug 23) - LW Wednesday as I took 4 LW’s (Cleveland CBX 60, Ping Eye 2 57.5, TItleist 260-08 and Indi FLX S 58) to loosely compare feel, confidence, distance control. Set up to hit from 20yds and then from 30 (over the tulip tree) to a 10’ dia target. Was not surprised at the difference of each club, especially the sole interaction with the ground. Really amplified the drill @iacas employed during the C-19 Practice plan.

Spent an hour or so hitting balls into a net, focusing on clubpath and not over swinging.

Day 17, August 24th, 2023

Played 9 holes after work. Holy crap that humidity! Had a really bad par 5 on hole #2, but then told myself to start grinding. I went 1 over going in with 1 bogey and 6 pars. Started exaggerating stuff I need to. Really happy with the 9 holes. Especially in this heat, with walking only on the course (no carts allowed) due to the rain we got yesterday.

Day 297, August 24, 2023

Made some swings downtown trying out a feel that's really closely related to what I've been doing. I like it.

Day 114 - Played Harbour Town. Had a great time.

Had an unusual hook/pull draw in play off the tee but short game and putting helped scrap a respectable round.

When I really focused on the feeling of my priority piece I hit flush irons. Who woulda thought!?

Day 1 or 7, not sure and don’t feel like checking today:

Worked on drop/rotate downswing feel. Really exaggerating drop portion. Seem to hit the ball decently with exaggeration of feel.

Day 38: busy day today:

  • putted on my mat while on a conference call
  • did a stack session
  • hit 40 balls at the range, random targets
  • putted for a while on the practice green. Worked on short putts, did a stack putting session, and then did the pull back drill.

Day 67: Aug 25

Played 18 holes, coming in -5 nett. Struggled off the tee for a while before settling down. Still not as accurate as I’d like for approach play, but in some ways I’m being overly picky about that - most of my misses were “good” or “safe” misses, leaving me simpler short game shots. By and large short game/ putting was where I’d want it to be.

Got to Golf Evolution early and then had a no-show, no-call so I got a decent amount of practice in.

Worked on drop/rotate downswing feel more today and really focused on the turn part. Did a lot of rehearsing, not too many balls.

Day 68: Aug 26

Golf lesson followed by range time. I still have to concentrate a little on maintaining a good club path, but it’s becoming more natural. But I want to tighten it up a little more, especially as adding additional club head speed could easily result in poorer technique.

Also did a lot of driver practice - I don’t have a consistent miss, but then it’s a new thing for me to handle. So that will come with time & practice. Plus most of the shots are fairway finders; steady backswing to set correctly at the top, then fully commit to the shot. Swing thought is just “square the clubface”. Wasn’t that long ago that my standard driver shot was a weak slice…

    • I stumbled across these pictures of the PXG mini-driver. • Day 20: 12/30/2024 I've been working on my swing in front of the mirror today. Spent a lot of time at slow speed, mid speed and a couple at full speed. I just came back in from the garage where I practiced my PPJ swing by hitting about 10 balls with the 6-iron into my net.
    • I'm just guessing here. But couldn't Titleist build a mini-driver with a very low center of gravity? Then it would work off the deck. The deep face wouldn't be as problematic.  I'm just spit-balling. I know nothing about this product.
    • Yea, but a deeper face makes it not as useful off the fairway. This is why the driver is not easy to hit off the fairway.  For a select few PGA Tour players, it might be good. The concept of the mini driver has been around for a long time now. Very few ever keep it in their bag. This is a guess, but probably because it sucks off the ground. Nothing here looks like it is any different than the other mini drivers of the past.  I get it from Cameron Young and Will Zalatoris point of view. They hit the ball a long way. The odds they ever hit a 3-wood off the turf is like what, a handful a times a year? They probably would hit it 98% off the tee and 2% off the ground. They probably want something that think is longer off the tee versus their 3-wood because they don't hit the 3-wood off the ground much at all.  This is where I say, Titleist claiming "worked as a go-to club off the tee and off the deck." is more marketing than something that is actually beneficial to a golfer. This is primarily for off the tee.
    • One thing I've noticed with Mini Drivers is that the manufacturers seem like they keep their quantities somewhat limited.  The last two TaylorMade Mini's and the Callaway AI Smoke Mini were sold out quickly.
