They are definitely a minority but sometimes when some people have money it makes them think they are better than others.

I went to a party with some rich guys filling the room, and they all talked about their country clubs then asked me where I play and I told them mostly public courses with one or two visits when invited to nice courses or country clubs. Later, I was enjoying a Johnny Walker Black label given to me by our host and thought it tasted really great. Then they talked about $1000 and $4000 bottles of really good Scotch, and how one of them bought a bottle went from a measly $450 a bottle to $1385 and I only mentioned that it would have been a great investment to purchase a few dozen bottles then sell them to help with my kid's college tuition, and that and I probably wouldn't be drinking a $1000 bottle of scotch. That kind of shut them up for the evening. I didn't want them to start discussing the very expensive looking and obscure Italian brand cars parked around the neighborhood being "sullied" by my 2010 Subaru Legacy. :-D

Unfortunately, many of the 2% really know how to make the 98% feel somehow unworthy of breathing the same air as them. . .

Interesting post.   Thinking about it, I think the last sentence, about you feeling unworthy, is your fault, not theirs.   If you hang around with a bunch of rich guys, they talk about rich guy stuff.  They're not necessarily trying to make you feel small.  In fact, the way you tell the story, when you reacted, they realized what was happening in your head, and they shut up about the expensive liquor.

Rich people are just like everyone else, except they're rich.   Working class guy might bring up some kind of craft beer he tried the other day, rich guy might bring up the expensive scotch he tried the other day.  Rich guy has to be very very careful what he talks about because working class guy might be standing nearby and get all hostile and resentful.

This type of guy would have a fit with my women's new to golf group.  It can take us 3 hours to play 9 holes.  FYI, we always offer to let others play through, but most aren't in any great rush.

The hosts are really nice people, and I just don’t fit in because I grew up with nothing and that mentality stuck with me.

Same here. I grew up litteraly hand to mouth after my dad was made redundant. Had to sell the house and move to a council house (luckily in a nice area). Dad worked hard to provide for us and we never went without. I'm lucky as while im not well off i have a comfortable life.

I view it this way. As far as im concerned im the richest man in the world as i get to see my wife and kids everyday and im able to provide for them. We have a family member who moved to the middle east to work. They are on a massive wage but never see their kids and have only seen their grandchild twice since they were born (1 year old).

I know which i'd rather have. Those rich fools can keep their mega bucks!

Same here, we were suing NASA for the incompetence of one of the directors for playing too much politics. We ultimately won, but it took 8 years. 8 years of no money except to pay the minimum amount to stay out of foreclosure. With 3 kids, I had to live with my grandparents.

My brother in law and his wife make huge money, they never spent any time with my niece. She went through different bad phases due to this neglect, and is only now starting to recover a couple years after university.

She went to the best schools, got high grades and was a model showpiece for their success until she snapped from the pressure.

That guy can eff right off.   Golf is about enjoyment of the game, not about trying to prove something to someone else.  Handicaps are for own personal information, not as a damn license to play golf.   (unless by play golf, you mean trying to qualify for the British open or whatever).

I would happily prefer to play with someone that plays to about a 21, but is not sure, but has enough love for the game to make over 1,000 posts on a golf specific forum than I would someone that plays to a 12 and is enough of a jackass to suggest that a handicap is license to play golf.

On top of that, it's questionable if he actually plays as well as he indicated to Russ. I agree, what a world class jerk.

I guess that guy is proof of the old saying "opinions are like assholes, everybody has one" and he let it show.

Go out and enjoy yourself, if that means playing golf then do it - whether you shoot 72, 92, 122 or don't even keep score.
But for god's sake don't play slow

I was thinking of this same cliche'

As long as you play at a decent pace or let faster folks through, I don't care about your handicap or if you have one.

I have kept one in the past, and am about to resume doing so this season, because I think there are benefits, and some tournaments require one. It encourages me to play by the rules and focus on the shot at hand. It is an indicator of a serious golfer, I think. By serious, I mean one who wants to improve, be it gradual or a lot. I play golf for fun and relaxation, and can enjoy any type of scenario, but I do try my best and desire to improve. Done correctly, it provides a measurable index (pun slightly intended) of your relative proficiency, and a basis for goal setting.

Most golfers do not keep an official handicap.  I happen to because when I started playing at age 40 I was invited to be part of a regular foursome that played handicapped skins every Sunday morning, so for most years since then I have kept a handicap.  At 17.5 it is nothing to brag about but I enjoy tracking my "potential" and since I live in NJ I need a 22 or better to play at Pine Valley when I get my invitation!

The attitude you ran into I would hope is a rare exception.  Golf is a game and if you want to play in tournaments (or $ matches) you will likely need a handicap.  But you do not need one to play and enjoy the game.
