I don't have more info in terms of score, wondering which qualifying it was. So one guy gets a call, you get into the sectionals! The other is like, DOH!

So you work on your game, pay the money to try and qualify, you are near the number and you leave? WTF? Both of these dudes should have their heads examined.

At sectionals, yeah, you wait around. But at locals i usually leave as soon as I'm done. They let you know if you got through or not. I didn't even know their were alternates awarded at locals...

Oh well. At least he can blame it on Chris diMarco. Makes it a more interesting story. ;-)

Is there more to it?  it sounds like in the event of a tie whoever is still there gets the spot.  Ties can't be uncommon at all for a qualifier, so why leave?

Cristian DiMarco spoke with GolfChannel.com (his father is a commentator for the network) and explained that the previous year in the same local qualifier at the same course he had shot one-under-par 71 and was nowhere near being among those who advanced to Sectional Qualifying

“We thought we had no chance,” Cristian said. “We thought it was a foregone conclusion.”

As far as i know. They've typically taken all ties for the final spot at local qualy. I got into sectionals in 2014 that way. I found out the next day i got through. But state golf assioiations usually run the qualifiers, not really the USGA. So policies might be different from state to state. I dont know.

On average, how many amateurs get into the U.S. Open?  Also, is there a different path of entry for those currently playing collegiate golf?

That's it.

You're either exempt or you go through qualifying.

    • Hi @RetiredOldMan!  I am glad to see you are still playing and having good scores.  I hope that when I am 79, I am not only able to play, but still able to produce as good scores as you have been doing.   I look forward to hearing more of your success and your opinion of the senior flex shafts.
    • Hello Golfing Buddies, It has been awhile since I posted but I am the Retired Old Man that asked for advice because I suffered two "T.I.A.'s about switching from playing right handed to playing left handed.  I purchased a Callaway Edge Left handed golf clubs. I changed the grips to oversize grips.  Well, two weeks ago and still at 79 years old, I shot a 44 and 47 on a small course in my hometown.  I am currently changing my shafts from regular flex to Senior flex.  So, you can see' it can be done! So, you other old timers; get with the program! Blessings to all of you. Retired Old Man (Terry Warner)

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.
