I found it a few weeks ago, looked at it a few times, and figured "what the heck" and gave it try.

At the time, I normally used a wrist hinge in my pitching. I was better than average at pitching, but there was nothing really great with my stroke. I would hit the occasional fatty, maybe a few worm assassinations thrown in, and the longer the club, the less accurate I was.

So I gave this no hinging thing a try. At first it was quite awkward. The kind of awkwardness that would make some golfers give up too soon on a change. (I don't give up on anything very easily)

After some time spent, I started noticing some positives in my pitching. I was hitting more balls better, with more club head control, which meant better accuracy. I attribute that to fewer moving parts in the stroke. Since it was the same stoke, my different clubs used, took care of the distance part.

I not saying this type of stroke is the end all for hitting quality pitch shots. I am not even sure how many pros actually use it. However, if your pitching game is suspect in some way, you might want to give it a look see. It just might work better for you.

I have three quick thoughts…

  • He does hinge his wrists. Just not much.
  • He's going to have a hard time using that from all but the cleanest of lies. One of the advantages of the "Quickie Pitching" method is that it provides more speed and a more glancing blow, so you're able to get through bad lies, thick rough, etc.
  • Using the bigger muscles will make it tougher to have good touch with these types of shots.

Thanks for the link. I can't do that on my phone. I understand your comments, and of course they are valid.

I am thinking that since I was already putting, using the larger muscles, that using the larger muscles with this shot was much easier. My M1 Heavy Putter is designed for the  use of the larger muscles.

As for hitting out of heavy rough with this stroke, I have not tried it. I have however had pretty good success hitting balls that are sitting down in shorter grasses. Normal fairway lies are not a problem.

This is how I used to try pitching, before I started working with Erik.

I'm obviously not a good golfer, so take this for what it's worth, but this is the biggest issue I had with something similar to this pitching method.  I had no touch at all...felt very mechanical.  I'm not still good at pitch shots, by any means, but it feels much more controllable and my good shots are much, much better.  The method described in this video just feels way too rigid for me.

I also don't know that you could use it on a longer pitch shot (say, 40 yards or so).

Sounds like the Pelz method which I use a lot unless I need more spin.

I think you are right about Pelz. In fact, even though I initially searched TST for this topic, I didn't find anything. Then looking for more info on the his topic using my own search, I found it had been discussed on TST back in 2012.  My mistake.

Yeah I don't think this technique is at all reasonable for anything like 40 yards and up and even slightly below that range.

This looks a little bit like the chipping with your putting stroke method @iacas has shown which does introduce some hinge as you get further out.

I'm a broken record on this point for sure, but that paint brush feel quick pitching method and video has taken my game to the next level. It quickly turned my 60 degree wedge from a liability into a strength.

Granted the video does not show a full follow thru-- I do complete the follow thru from 1/4 and 1/2 swings and can hit very accurate shots from 50-105 (5 yd gaps) between my 4 wedges.

That's not what the video is demonstrating.

You're talking about the partial wedge yardage system which uses more of a full swing mechanic and most definitely involves wrist hinge.
