More of a focus based question. How to block out negativity while playing? Thanks for your input though.

After re-reading the question, I def misunderstood. It took my dad and I a while. We don’t give opinions unless the other is playing waaayyyy worse than usual. He might say things like “well that’s where you were aimed” after I blast a drive into the trees. we have full freedom to ignore each other or say buzz off and neither takes it personally. Set a ground rule to only “talk shop” after the round, unless asked.

My answer may disappoint you. It will effect you. In Jack’s autobiography, he mentions how his wife had a revelation that he believes to be true; Players who are in a good place within their relationship/marriage play better than those who are not. He claims the success of Arnie, Black Knight, and himself had a lot to do with each of them being married to an “amazing woman”

I have no science to back this up, but my experience has been that general stress levels play a huge part.  It's harder to stay calm and composed when something bad happens (in any sport, or life in general) when you're stressed in general.  Spousal relationships are obviously huge points of stress if they're not in good shape.

One key in golf is to get into the focused mental state to let the body do the work. If you are having stress or anxiety it is hard to keep it our of your game. Stress kills your game no matter where it comes from. Try meditation or another relaxation technique.

I play with a guy that never shuts up and gets me rather irritated with his chatter during shot setup. I have been trying to limit play with him but the last time I played he tagged along. I decided to use it. I just decided that I would ignore and focus on the shot. If I was having difficulty, I would wait until I felt like I was immersed in the shot.... worked well.... this time. We'll see if it holds water.

When my now wife and I were dating, I had a beeper, no cellphone in those days. One day she beeped me on the golf course,.. i forget what about.  When I got home, i told her" There are only 2 reasons for you to call me on the golf course. 1. Someone is dying or 2 and preferably, they're already dead. 2 is preferable because if they're dying, I have to quit playing golf, and go try to do something. If they're already dead, there's nothing I can do, and I can keep playing golf." I was being mildly sarcastic,. but she got the message

Do a lot of you play with the wife/husband?

Curious as when I was teaching the wife she thought she was gonna get in my Sat morning round.

Oh no.... this is me and the boys I told here.  We can play together after or Sunday or after work.

I had to remind her of Girls night out on Friday night... do I tag along??  She got the point.

    • after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....
    • this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.
    • day 57. Technique practice in the net. Really trying to slow down.
    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
    • As we've had to tell other people, the topic is which is the better GOLFER, not human being.
