I saw MGS 2019 driver test too.  I'm a bit skeptical where the Cobra F9 wasn't near the top.  That driver is the one everyone raves about.  I've hit them all indoors and the F9 is best...indoors.

I took the Flash sz outside and although I could not tell the distance, it was accurate with a great flight.

The M5 for me lacked ball speed but might have made up for it in launch and spin.

What I don't like about indoors is it seems a sub 2000 spin rate with 160 ball speed and 12 degrees of launch is not enough spin to get the ball to go over 300 yards every time.  The GC2 shows it going that far but I don't think it's correct.  I prefer 2000-2200 with 14 degrees launch at that ball speed...then the distance would make sense.

I agree with the poster whi didn't like the  g410, very disappointed when I hit it.  I was wondering how the non pro version of the Tensei pro Orange would be since I use a HZRDUS yellow now but it was disappointing.

The thing with my ball fitting is, each club came in the same x-stiff shaft (make/mode).

I also brought in my current driver and got some numbers with that. There was a noticeable difference in control and distance with the F9 for me.

  • 2 weeks later...

Cobra F9 (Yellow), 10.5 degree Fujikura ATMOS (Stiff) for me. TM M5 was not-so-close 2nd.

I considered the white but the yellow was just too pimp to pass up...lol. Sound/feel/carry/dispersion were ALL better than anything else. The spin dropped from 3,900 rpms to 2,100 rpms as soon as he moved the 14 gm weight forward. Carry went up by 14 yards over 10 shots on an average. I even managed to get a couple of carries in the low 240s (that is a big carry for me) on the LM. Clubhead speed was avg. 4 mph higher than M5.

Best thing is the shot zone seems like it shrunk to almost 80% of my current one and the flight is mostly straight with less curve. I am hoping to have a good season..

That feels a bit off. Moving the CG forward shouldn't drop it that much. Maybe 300-500 rpm max. I am wondering if you swing up more subconsciously with the weight forward.

Hard to say. We went back and forth few times to see If wasn't doing something different, but couldn't pin it on anything that I could feel. I even hit the white version with both settings.

My guess was it reduced the vertical gear effect by bring MOI higher up the face and hence knuckling down spin a bit even on shots with contact low on the face. Relatively speaking.

It was interesting though.

So I checked today with baby powder on face today in my backyard net. Switched the weight back and forth.

Long story short for some reason I am catching the ball half inch higher on the face with weight forward fairly consistently. I also noticed it sounds heavier instead the high pitch tinny sound.

The feel is the sound, and the sound comes from the materials used.

Cobra and Taylormade have a more muted feel and sound because the heads use a lot of carbon-fiber, which dampens sound.

Ping, using a lot of carbon fiber, is somewhat muted too but has a unique sound because they tune the sound internally with ribs in the driver head.

Callaway has a loud initial sound because of the jailbreak bars, but then the sound is quickly muted by the carbon fiber in the crown.

Titleist TS has all-titanium heads with a titanium sound that echoes off the titanium crown.

Visited our new PGA Superstore.  Very helpful people there.  Most places I go are so used to seeing me I have to wrench my own stuff and. Lear my shots off the computer.

I tried to like the flash subzero, just don't...indoors anyway.  So I think I've finally put it on the back burner.

The F9 has been the top performer all winter for me.  I hit it at the PGA SS along with the SZ.  SZ was lousy, all over the place.  Actually not low spin either.  I switched over to the F9.  Atoms blue, not the black that I loved.  It was still great and I didn't want to bother him for black but I'll hit it later in the week.

The M5...never really put any serious thought into it.  Last time I hit it it seemed the ball speed was low but launch and spin made up for it. At the suggestion of the employee, I hit it with a better shaft and the ball speed was there along with launch and spin numbers I liked.  M5 moved itself up to a tie with the Cobra now for me.  Great feel and sound too from the carbon fiber.

I'll hit the Cobra with the shaft I like, Atmos black ts6 along side the M5 with the tensei white non pro.  I will also put a smoke 60 in both as well.  I can't wait for this test later in the week.

(edited)

I decided to go for the Cobra.

Not a bad club. Wouldn't really call it a long club. Has nice impact feel though. Hope it doesn't break (seems extremely thin/ fragile).

Will report back with some more meaningful insight..

Hate to fall into the hype, but I hit a demo Epic Flash today.  It’s settings were not what I would have ever used. It was a 10.5 with +2 and D setting. The weight was Draw setting as well.  However I hit that version better than my Ping 30 which was custom fit!

    • The MTB Prime and Prime X had issues with the cover being too soft and getting cut too easily. They said it was more prevalent in the Prime than the Prime X which I found odd because that was the exact opposite of my experience.
    • Day 120 - Played 18; much better than yesterday. Miss right now is off the heel of the club, so I need to sort that out.
    • Today we played Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth, NH. Course was in great shape but my game didn't show up. I will say I pitched and chipped fairly well but almost everything else was very hit or miss. Cost myself a lot hitting an in play drive with pulling my approach shots maybe 85% of the time. Finally figured out I had been swaying most of the round. Only took me until 13 to figure it out. Used what felt like a much more centered turn and the ballstriking improved. 18 tomorrow using a 2 man scramble format. Just looking to contribute. Been a blast though.
    • Day 22: Hit balls with 7-iron using mevo+ to track dispersion. Was out for a long time after work; 86 balls but the first 50+ were 50% swings focusing on top of backswing feel and then just hitting the ball as a psychic reward. Finished with 20 balls close to full speed. Pretty happy with dispersion and also no horrendous misses. I’m chunking my priority piece out into two separate feels, first and more important is the position/balance at top of backswing which is what I was working on. Once I have that engrained I’ll move to transition part.
    • FWIW I never really had issues with the previous generation of Snells. But… I'm not sure I played them a ton, either.
