My Swing (Nail)

I've been Playing Golf for: 18 months
My current handicap index or average score is: 17
My typical ball flight is: Slight draw
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Pull with my irons

Here are two videos of my 8 iron. Forgive the faces I make. There are a lot of things I do that I don’t realise I do. Any thoughts?


I think it worked this time. Ya this is my 8 iron. I never realised I lifted my left foot or bent my lead arm as much. Any thoughts? Or any tips guys? On my swing in general I mean. 

My miss with irons tends to be a pull or pull draw

Which of the 5 simple keys do I need to work on? 

Am I getting my hands forward enough at impact? I tend to have a very high ball flight.

It’s hard to tell from that face on view because the camera is too close and above you because you are in a stall. Try and find a place where you can place the camera at waist level with the ball in the middle.

Ya the range I go to has walls quite close. It’s hard to video. I’ll get someone to video the next time I’m on the course.

Swing looks solid for the most part!  Camera angle is a little off here, should be more between foot line and ball line.

Lower body stalls a little bit.  Looks like your left wrist has a tendency, maybe, to cup a bit, so try and make sure it's flattened to slightly bowed on the downswing.  Swing plane is pretty steep. You could shallow it out and swing the hands more around the body.

Nope. It's fine - on the toe line, parallel to the target line (so an open stance will still look open). Between the ball and hands is no man's land. The ball is even worse.

There's kind of a lot to work on here, because they're all inter-related.

I'd do some wall drill stuff with a focus on Key #2/#4… but more the latter.

What do you guys mean when you say lower body stalls? 

Do you mean I’m not getting my weight forward enough or on time?

You think it’s because of my swing plane? Would the overbend in my lead arm and therefore the cupping of the wrist cause the steepness?

Yours doesn't "stall" as much as many others I've seen. When I say "stalls" I mean it stops moving (mostly). Often when someone early extends, the hips stop turning through, stop moving forward. Often because the golfer is doing what they can to shallow the club to hit from the inside a bit or at least get it out of the ground so they don't take a big divot.

Thanks for the input. Do you think working on a flat lead wrist and straighter arm in the back swing will help with shallowing the plane? What are the wall drills you mentioned?

Hey phillyk what was the idea of the red line you drew? Were you looking to spot something in particular?

Just another sign to note for stalling.  When the hips move towards the ball in the downswing, it's harder for them to rotate.  The red line indicates where the butt started at setup and where you want to stay through impact.

Just to offer another opinion, the "tush line" thing actually doesn't look too bad to my untrained eye. I would suggest he focus on the priority piece that @iacas offered, that of working on wall drill, and see if that takes care of any stalling.

I've been down the road of focusing on the tush line, and for me, it was a symptom of something else, and so trying to fix it directly was hopeless.

Anyway, just a thought - I'm certainly not a pro, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the tip mate. I hadn’t actually worried about the tush line as you call it. I figured the wall drill and keeping the head steady would take care of that on it’s own

Two swings from today. I’ve been working on the wall drill and I thought I had fixed the cupped wrist but not sure now

Both shots were draws. They both ended up left of the green. The drew too much. It’s not the pull miss I was having but it is still ending up left of the green.

I respect the guts it takes to dress like Tiger...but with adidas shoes and hat! Ahhhhh! Lol jk man.

Keep up the hard work. Iacas has done a lot for my game in a short time. Make sure you do it his way (slow motion, tiny successes)-even if it’s painful at times. It works.

    • Couple things to update First on the clubs/ball. I switched golf balls to the Left Dash ProV1x. It seems like a great fit for me. I always need lower spin off the tee, it's about a half club longer into greens, and still gives me enough spin with chips and pitches to hit whatever shot I need. The durability is insane too, played 35 holes with one over my last two rounds and it still looked brand new until I lost it. Hybrid is no longer. Couldn’t quite get a consistent strike and the random snap hook left was always lurking as soon as the strike drifted out towards the toe. I know it was me not the club but I couldn’t stand the lefts anymore. Titliest fitting guy came to our club a few days ago and I had been curious about the T200 3iron. I hit a few with it and the stock HZRDUS graphite shaft, it wasn’t bad at all but I could definitely tell when I mishit it. Then the fitter had me try the U505 3iron. When he asked if I was open to trying it I said something like “Isn’t that the game improvement one?” and he said “Just trust me and hit a few with it”. Within 5 swings I was sold. Suddenly it didn’t look as big and chunky when I started hitting rocket after rocket. It did every single thing I want a 3 iron to do. It flies very high, forgiving, can hit it off the tee and ground, can flight it low when needed, and best of all, it doesn’t go left. He had me try to snap hook one left and it resulted in a nice tight draw, nowhere close to a hook. Tried it with the stock shaft and their upgraded one, ended up hitting it the best with the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ-95. Ended up getting a great deal on a used one that arrived yesterday so going to go measure my numbers with it today at the range. I expect to be using this a lot for 2nd shots into par 5s, being that 230-250 club. Hit some on the Mevo+ yesterday and the distance is exactly what I needed.     From a playing perspective, been playing pretty solid so far this season, driving and putting have been solid overall, approach shots have been good for the most part and short game wasn't great to start the year but it's been getting better lately with some more dedicated practice. Compared to scratch over 7 rounds:
    • so with the driver. Feel more arm  width at A4. keep an in the eye on the ball. The first move from the top is lowering the hands down. Don’t mix that up with looking up at the target as the club comes down from A4 with the body. Feel like I get width with the arms from the chest in the Downswing.
    • Wordle 1,070 3/6 ⬜⬜🟩⬜🟩 ⬜🟩⬜⬜⬜ 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩
    • Went back and reviewed my rounds this year at my home course to fill out the spreadsheet. Realized I have made at least par on each hole but two that I have bogied. At my skill level, it gives me a new confidence that I can play each hole decently well and strong together a lower score. Great mental boost. 
    • I'm at 330 I think. I have a spreadsheet with all of them in it. It helps having lived in two countries. 159 in the US and 136 in the UK. Then a handful in Europe and a few in other countries (Canada, Australia, Mexico).
