How much of a golf ball can be recycled? Is there any interest or pressure within the industry to make them more so? Is electronic technology embedded within the golf ball ever going to happen? For instance are we likely to see trackers or sensors anytime soon?

Have a few pounds to spend, new driver or gps watch
ZappyAd replied to Rorys7iron's topic in Golf Talk
Laser rangefinder would be near the top of my list too. Getting accurate yardages means you can then try to hit those yardages and assess the level of your game against your misses. I've found it really useful and prefer it over a watch because I can choose exactly what I am getting the range of. But I didn't get any kind of range finding device until I was able to hit my approach irons quite accurately. I then realised that I was missing the flag because I hadn't judged the distance correctly, rather than hitting an errant shot. So having said that if the choice is between a properly fitted driver and a gps watch then I would go with driver. Learning to hit a driver is hard but getting one that is fitted properly to your swing will make it easier. And if you can hit it well then getting closer for your second shot makes a big difference (and that is when accurate yardages are more important). -
At the moment it seems like motherboards are out of date with almost every iteration of Intel's chip updates. Either they change the socket shape or the memory configuration or the connections for storage or USB. I would suggest a dedicated sound card is probably worth looking at along with good monitor speakers and maybe even a USB audio interface depending on what kind of mic you are going to use. Being able to play back your recordings on good speakers is worth a lot as it helps you hear things that you otherwise wouldn't. If audio is your focus then paying more for good recording and playback components is going to give you more value than spending on processor power. Scan have a section on their website for pro-audio with some example systems. They might be in a different country but it is still useful to compare configurations of example configurations: https://www.scan.co.uk/shop/pro-audio

I've built my last 3 or 4 PCs for work (3D, photoshop, video editing and programming). It is pretty straightforward - there is a good magazine in the U.K. called CustomPC that keeps a list of top components and a few component suppliers (scan.co.uk) where you can get all the bits. It is a bit nerve wracking fitting a $300-600 chip into a motherboard without bending the pins or frying the innards with static but so far have had no problems. It's useful to get a motherboard that will post an error code on a digital display as that really helps diagnosing issues. The whole process is good in that it demystifies what's going on inside the box and makes it easier to add in drives and ram etc down the line. For my next PC though I think I will get it built by a custom build company (scan as mentioned above). Their price is almost the same as buying and building yourself but without the stress. Plus they match components so everything is compatible and they know how far configurations can be overclocked. Plus they give a pretty good guarantee. It is one of those things that doing it a couple of times is useful but after that you don't learn much new.

I'm not sure that I like the look of the backs more than the previous i irons but that isn't really so important for me. Will be interested to try them out as I am thinking about changing my 3-4-5 s55 irons to i. Can't imagine they are going to be that much better than the previous generation though. What is going on with their numbering system? Is there some ping history thing where i200 makes sense? They seem to be just jumping around all over the place with their club names at the moment.

I have been playing Glide wedges for about a year now - 50', 56' and 60', all in SS with CFS Wedge shaft, one ping color dot less upright than my iron set. When I bought them after hitting different grinds and talking to the pro I decided to get all the same grinds to keep things simple. I hit the 50' 110yds, 56' 90yds and 60' 70yds. I use the 56' / 60' out of sand and the bounce is absolutely fine. Long sand shots are just more difficult to hit so I don't think the club will make that much difference. I use mainly the 56' for chipping around the green and find I can open or close it without issue. My irons (S55) have CFS Stiff shafts and as far as I can tell the CFS Wedge shaft is just fine for me. All in all I think they are great wedges. After about a year of use I can't think of a situation where I've ever thought I needed a different make or model of wedge. I would say the grooves don't grab quite as much as they did but I put that down to just normal wear (I practice with them a lot). If I was looking to replace my wedges today I would buy Glides again, probably the exact same spec but I might try to change the lofts to get away with just 2 (so maybe 52' and 58')

I got a SuperStroke Fatso 5.0 fitted to my putter this year, just to see if having a fatter grip made a difference. I really like it and my putting is much better than 12 months ago, especially distance control. Some of that may be down to relentless practice but I do think the grip has helped. For $20 it has probably been one of the best golf investments I've ever made and at that sort of price my thinking was if I don't like it I can make a change quite easily. I chose the Fatso simply by going into my local pro shop and trying a bunch of putter with different grips to see which one 'felt' the best. Fatso won hands down!

I haven't bought a Metallica album since Cliff Burton died . When I think about it that is a very long time ago now! Just about the only thing that has made me go wow in relation to Metallica in the last 30 years was finding out that Lars was married to the actress in Gladiator, and even that was probably 10 years ago. I might give the new tracks a listen just to see what I have been missing.

I'm actually starting to believe this might happen now - are we in the 'it's too late to pull out now' zone yet?

I hired a fairly high end hardtail mountain bike over the weekend just to see how much better it was than the 90's hand me down bike that I use to ride with the kids. Turns out not that different! It was definitely the case that every component was better - gears were smooth, brakes were strong, suspension was effective, dropper seat was cool. But for close to $2k I didn't get any more enjoyment out of riding than I do with my current bike (which I enjoy). It did make me think about golfing and when you get your new clubs out onto the course and find that you still hit the ball pretty much like you did before!

I hit both the standard G and G30 (so not SFTEC) on the range with a Ping rep - everything was identical e.g. shafts / grip / loft etc. Results were pretty much identical too - couldn't really see any difference on the Trackman data.

The third tee is quite far from the second green around the lake so I didn't get chance to ask them when I reached the green. And at that point I just decided to head back to the range and do some practice. Some days it just isn't worth all the waiting around.

So this is another bizarre chapter in the book of slow play at my course. I got to the second tee just as a couple of guys with a cart were teeing off. They were really slow to get going and took a lot of time over each shot, hitting about 75 yds each time. I'm just standing on the tee watching this and being all zen about how lucky I am to be outside because I know I'm not going to get waved through. They get to a point that is about 300 yds away, just before a lake, and guy 1 is walking over to his ball. He then stops and looks back at me on the tee, making some exaggerated hand movements to shield his eyes as if he is looking way too far into the distance, and shrugging his shoulders. I didn't get what he was doing at first but it went on for about 30 seconds and I finally realised he was indicating to me that he was too far away and that I should have hit my tee shot already. Then he hit his ball and did the whole 'how far away is that' act again. The thing is that this hole is quite downhill with a firm fairway and it is not that hard to hit a 3w into the lake. Today there was a strong one+ club wind behind so I knew I could reach where he was standing with a 5w. Sure enough when I finally hit my shot it ends up about 10 yards from where his ball lay. This was a first for me - I never hit into people so I am possibly a bit too cautious off the tee but equally I know how far I hit it. I could see how someone behind me could tell me to hurry up but how does someone in front think that's ok? They weren't waiting on the green to clear (the threesome in front had disappeared up the next fairway) and they weren't waving me through so this guy was basically stopping me from playing through and at the same time telling me to hurry up!

I was wondering the same thing - they were on offer in the UK recently too (but have now gone back up in price). The first tags came out in Apr14, second gen Oct 15, so it could be an update is imminent (although it might already be too close to Christmas for a 2016 release).

I would also ask the question if there are any laws in your state / country relating to whether it is ok to store and track that type of information. What happens for instance if the system gets hacked and that data were to be made public? Are there any additional liabilities that the business could be exposed to as a result of holding that data? It always strikes me that in software development it is easy to get a bit all jurassic park in that people think about if they could rather than if they should. At the very least the security side of holding that data is worth thinking about ( and might take more than a couple of days to get right).

My goal for this year was to break 80 at least once and I've done it a few times. I would agree with @Yukari - it generally happens if I manage to stay out of trouble off the tee all the way round. If I miss the fairway off the tee (which on my course generally means being in the trees) then I reckon it costs me about 1.5 shots on average. You only need that to happen a few times and a 'wow excellent 78' becomes an 'oh well 80+ again'. And that is with every other part of your game staying exactly the same.

Have you tried tps? http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/index.html I registered a landline with it once and got no more calls. The calling organisation has to respect the rules and actively not call anyone on the list but given that prosecutions are now more likely if they break the rules I think it works.

Thanks for your time answering our questions. Do you have any kind of specific nutrition plan during a round or do you just eat whatever whenever? How much of your practice time do you spend with a launch monitor?

The club I play at has a new par three course (9 holes) with larger cups. I think they must be about five golf balls wide. It is great for beginners as you can be much more aggressive on long putts and chipping. You also make more of the short three footers that can cause so much angst. So I can see that it will build confidence because you see so many more shots around the green being holed. However I'm not sure what happens when a beginner moves on to the main course. Will they feel they can hole anything or get intimidated by the standard hole size? After initially thinking it was a great idea I'm starting to think that having the standard size hole would have been a better idea. After playing a few rounds I also think I prefer the standard hole size because the difficulty helps separate players more on the green.

Trump Courses - Would You Pay to Play One Now?
ZappyAd replied to metaswinger's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Just read an article about turnberry and how much it makes and how many it employs. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-business-37655823 basically at the moment it's losing money and not employing as many people as the planning application said it would. I would think it needs the trump brand to be strong for it to pay off financially. -
I think he is better off trying to play his way back into form but I guess with the amount of attention he is going to get first time out the fear of underperforming is really starting to bite. It must be tough mentally not being able to do the thing you always thought you were the best in the world at doing.

Alternative to driver off the tee
ZappyAd replied to TomBomb's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
They have trees on both sides of the fairway at my course so a miss is bad whichever way I hit it! 5w is a good option but if you like irons then trying to go lower with your irons to a 4i might work. If you can carry a 6i 170 then you might be able to get a 4i carrying 190 and rolling out to 200. If that is on the fairway then it beats 220 with a 5w in the trees. And a 4i isn't as scary as a 2i by a long way, especially if you got a super game improvement model. It might be the case that with a bit of practice you can get it to a point where you can rely on it. I think it can be very difficult to stay objective when going through this sort of process. If you can hit your 6i 170 and get it on the fairyway most of the time then even that isn't a bad option for the immediate term. Sure getting it further is better but only if it stays playable. Whatever you buy probably isn't going to fix things straight away and the real answer is going to involve a lot of practice with whatever club you choose. -

That's what I was wondering - being out injured is one thing but being out because someone else is injured and may or may not play next week or never must be tough.
